2 Page Two THE PARISH AS ONE BODY If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you, nor again the head to the feet, I do not need you. Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary. Now you are Christ s body, and individually parts of it. 3 Page Three April 1, 2012 ~ FROM THE PASTOR ~ Palm Sunday of the Passion of Our Lord we celebrate this weekend is an interesting festival of contrasts. On the one hand we remember the solemn, parade-like entrance of our Lord into the city center of Jerusalem amid cries of jubilation. On the other hand, we read about persons lurking in the shadows who view the spectacle with chagrin and skepticism. Who is this man on a donkey? What is he up to? Why are the people so joyous? One theme comes through loud and clear during the reenactment of this event as we wave our blessed palm and take it with us to adorn our homes, is the fickleness of human nature. As the events of our Lord s Passion unfolded, almost everyone who lined the streets of Jerusalem were nowhere to be found on the Via Dolorosa as Jesus carried his cross to Calvary. This has some similarity in our own day when Christians gather at Easter to celebrate the Resurrection event and the coming of spring with its warm weather and blossoming gardens, and then vanish for a period of time. This should not be surprising. The church has long been divided between cultural and intentional Catholics. While we enter into Holy Week, it is my hope and prayer that we will renew our commitment to be intentional Catholics. As we honor our Blessed, Risen Lord with shouts of joy this Easter, may our daily lives reflect a lively faith not only in theory but in practice too. At a recent meeting of our Knights of Columbus, Council 4018, Peter Rudyk, Jr. gave a report of the longstanding commitment of our Knights to the homeless through the endeavors of the Armory staff. All the clothes you have donated over the past months have fulfilled one of the most needed Corporal Works of Mercy, clothe the naked! Thank you to our Knights and St. Juliana parishioners. Lane Paulsen from the Knights is our parish representative for the annual Crop Walk which will be held on Sunday, April 29 th. Money raised by walkers will be used to fund our Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services (FIES) and the international Food for the Hungry. We are in need of walkers and those who are willing to donate on-line to assist with this Corporal Work of Mercy, feed the hungry! Please go to Lane s lanekofc@roadrunner.com. The new missalette/hymnal in the blue binders we use at Mass is designed to fit into the back clear plastic sleeve but not the front sleeve. The front and back sleeves are designed for the two volume version that is changed seasonally. Some parishioners have inserted the front cover into the front clear sleeve. By doing that, the binding will tear and the hymnal will not be secure in the blue binder. I ask everyone; please do not insert the front cover into the sleeve. It seems logical to do that but it is not designed that way by Oregon Catholic Press, the publisher. The back cover is already inserted in the back sleeve. Pete Lauder, St. Juliana parishioner, is a deacon aspirant in the formation program for the Diocese of Orange and as part of his formation toward ordination to the deaconate he is ministering at the Catholic Detention Ministry and Theo Lacy jail. Along with his wife Jan, Pete participates in monthly Communion Services, each about one hour long. Three to eight inmates attend each service. Pete and Jan are available to the inmates to answer their questions and comments as they learn more about our Catholic Faith. We look forward to Pete s future ordination to the Deaconate. (continued) (continued) I am happy to announce that Bishop Brown has assigned an additional permanent deacon to St. Juliana parish. On March 13th I received a letter from Deacon Frank Chavez, director of the office of the Deaconate. The letter officially assigns Deacon Charles Doidge from Fullerton to serve as deacon here at St. Juliana, effective May 1, Deacon Doidge has been serving at St. Philip Benizi this past year and we look forward as he joins Deacon Gerhard Stadel and retired Deacon Bill Schlater. In the weeks ahead we will work together to plan our collaborative ministry as we continue to serve our parishioners. Your participation in the Get on the Bus dinner and auction helped to raise $12,000 to hire buses to bring children to visit their incarcerated parents on Mother s Day and Father s Day. While this was a collaborative effort with the Congregational Church of Fullerton, St. Juliana was a key partner in this enterprise. The committee promises to improve on some of the hiccups. Better food for dinner and guidelines for the auction. We hope to co-sponsor this again. I wish to thank all who worked for months planning this event, especially the cochairs: Barbara Dietterle and Barbara Johnson, and our Newman Club and Knights of Columbus. We wish our Italian Catholic Federation (ICF) success this weekend as they celebrate the yearly St. Joseph Table Bake Sale in the Parish Center after the Sunday morning Masses. This occasion will benefit our St. Vincent de Paul food outreach. As we approach the Holy Triduum, our school children will celebrate the Living Lent in Church at 10:30am and 11:15pm on Wednesday, April 4th. Everyone is welcome to participate. Divine Mercy Sunday is April 15th The Novena in preparation begins on April 6th and continues for nine days to April 12th. During the Novena we mention the names of the people specified, confession before and for eight days after Easter Sunday, Holy Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday, Chaplet of Mercy and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament Holy Hour at 3pm. The bulletin this week has an insert. I began to share with you the Bishops Statement on Religious Freedom and the HHS Mandate in last week s bulletin. I ended with what the Bishops said this debate is not about. Now, with this second installment we hear what the Bishops say the debate is about. An unwarranted government definition of religion. The mandate includes an extremely narrow definition of what HHS deems a religious employer deserving exemption--- employers who, among other things, must hire and serve primarily those of their own faith. We are deeply concerned about this new definition of who we are as people of faith and what constitutes our ministry. The introduction of this unprecedented defining of faith communities and their ministries has precipitated this struggle for religious freedom. Government has no place defining religion and religious ministry. HHS thus creates and enforces a new definition---alien both to our Catholic tradition and to federal law---between our houses of worship and our great ministries of service to our neighbors, namely, the poor, the homeless, the sick, the students in our schools and universities, and others in need, of any faith community or none.and if this definition is to stand, it will spread throughout federal law, weakening its healthy tradition of generous respect for religious freedom and diversity. All---not just some- --of our religious institutions share equally in the selfsame God -given, legally-recognized right not to be forced to act in a manner contrary to their own beliefs. (More next week). In the Joy of Our Faith, Fr. Frank Falco, O.S.M.

She went to Sunny Hills High School and graduated with a Criminal Justice degree from Cal State Fullerton in During her childhood Sarah and her grandmother attended a Mormon church until her mother, Deb, began taking her to a non-denominational Christian church. When that church had to close down Sarah started looking for another church to call home. She met her fiancé, Ray Gomez, in 2006 and began to occasionally attend St. Juliana s, where Ray s brother, Manuel, his wife Alexis, and their children, Brandon and Kiara, are parishioners. Sarah had been considering joining RCIA just before Alexis became very ill in early In August while attending Alexis Celebration of Life at St. Juliana s, Sarah met Claire Buckley, who encouraged her to take the next step and call the parish office to sign up for RCIA. Sarah is so thankful for all the parishioners and RCIA leaders who have been such a blessing during the loss of Alexis and throughout Sarah s RCIA journey.
