If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended The eye cannot say to the hand, I do not need you, nor again the head to the feet, I do not need you. Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary. Now you are Christ s body, and individually parts of it. 3 FROM THE PASTOR Most Catholics here in Orange County and throughout our country and world will recall Divine Mercy, Second Sunday of Easter 2014 as the historic date when two modern day popes were canonized at the same time and will be honored in the private and public prayer life of the Universal Church for all time. What is striking about Pope Francis decision to officially recognize Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II as saints of the Church is how he proposed to honor two very different political and spiritual leaders in a way that would ultimately unite the faithful often characterized as conservative and liberal. Both leaders (Saints) governed the Church in very different times and with dissimilar leadership styles. Pope St. John XXIII, upon his election to the papacy on October 28, 1959, became the first pope in almost 100 years to make pastoral visits around his home diocese of Rome. He visited the sick and infirm, and when he dropped in on a prison he announced to those incarcerated, You could not come to me, so I came to you. John was a tireless advocate for peace, and he understood that lasting peace could never come about without courageous leaders. As Bishop he assisted Jewish refugees and other endangered groups in their attempts to flee the Nazis. He called all mankind to work for peace through civil dialogue and respect for human rights. On October 11, 1962, at the end of the opening day of the Second Vatican Council, the people of Rome gathered in Saint Peter s square and chanted for John to appear. He came forth and gave an impromptu speech and said: All the world is represented here tonight. It could even be said that even the moon hastens close tonight, that from above, it might watch this spectacle that not even Saint Peter s Basilica, over its four centuries of history, has ever been able to witness. Then later he said, When you head home, find your children. Hug and kiss your children and tell them: This is the hug and kiss of the pope. Besides convening the Second Vatican Council St. John XXIII in 1961 penned the encyclical, On Christianity and Social Progress, enlarging the scope of Catholic social teaching to include developing nations and challenging the laity to work for social justice. In 1963 he wrote a second social encyclical, Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), the first encyclical addressed to the world at large, making a plea for nuclear disarmament. His papacy lasted just four years, seven months, and six days. The church s conviction that he was in touch with God, that his leadership decisions were divinely inspired, and Vatican II was a miracle leads us to call him saint now. His feast is October 11, the anniversary of his opening Vatican II with these words: The Spouse of Christ (the Church) prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of Severity. St. John the XXIII died on June 3, His final words were Lord, you know that I love you. While John XXIII made the papacy more accessible to the people of Rome, Pope John Paul II made it accessible to the world. Throughout his time as pope, he visited 129 countries and became one of the most traveled world leaders ever logging nearly 700,000 miles in 27 years. He became the first Slavic pope in In his inaugural prayer, he said, Christ, make me the servant of your sweet power. He also spoke the words of Jesus, Be not afraid, a central message of his papacy. Between ordination to the priesthood in 1946 and consecration as a Bishop in 1958, Pope John Paul II finished two doctorates, served in several Krakow parishes, and was a university chaplain and seminary professor. An active outdoorsman, he favored hiking, kayaking, skiing, and camping. Among his many achievements : 1) He delivered of over 129 lectures on the Theology of the Body and wrote the first of 12 encyclicals, Redeemer of Mankind ; 2) Survived two attempts on his life; 3) Introduced the new Code of Canon Law; 4) Initiated World Youth Day; 5) Made the first official visit to a synagogue; 6) Presented the Catechism of the Catholic Church; 7) Released Crossing the Threshold of Hope, the first of five books as pope; 8) Was the first pope to enter a mosque and 9) added the Luminous Mysteries to the rosary. During his 26 years as pope, John Paul II highlighted countless examples of holiness by proclaiming 1,338 blesseds and canonizing 482 saints. In 1994, he beatified Gianna Beretta Molla, who sacrificed her life to carry a difficult pregnancy to term, and ten years later he canonized her. Pope John Paul s canonization of Saint Gianna has particular significance because when his own mother was pregnant with him, doctors thought she had no chance of giving birth to a live child, so they advised her to terminate the pregnancy. But like Gianna she remained dedicated to her unborn child and carried the baby Karol (Pope John II) to term. Pope St. John Paul II died after a protracted and debilitating illness in The holiness he acknowledged in others through many beatifications and canonizations is also revealed in the man who forgave his attempted assassin, tried to reunify a Church divided by history, and expressed regret for the Church s historical shortcomings. His last words were Let me go to the house of the Father. His feast is October 22, the anniversary of his inauguration as leader of the Church. As we plan ahead here in the parish, please mark your calendars for some future events that I hope will interest you. The St. Juliana feast day committee is now in the process of planning the annual feast day picnic and jamboree on Sunday, June 22 nd following the 11 a.m. Parish Mass. The guest of honor that weekend will be Bishop Kevin Vann who will celebrate Mass with us. The following Sunday, June 29 th there will be a coffee and cake reception after the 9 a.m. Mass as I bid farewell to St. Juliana and we welcome Father Michael Pontarelli, O.S.M. as the new pastor. Later St. Juliana will host the second annual Interfaith Religious Faire on September 14 th in the Parish Center and the Parish Festival the weekend of September 26-28, Don t forget our bi-lingual sung Masses next Sunday at 9am and 11am with guest musician Gerardo Larios and choir. ALTAR CARE-MAY 9, 2014 Toni Irving Barbara Legas Irene Luzano MUSIC MINISTRY NOTES FROM TODD HELM - MUSIC DIRECTOR For church musicians, the celebrations that surround Christmas and Easter are the busiest of the year. These celebrations require more music, and thus more rehearsal hours and an even bigger commitment from our music ministers. I would like to express my extreme gratitude to all of our musicians for the work they put into our Lenten, Holy Week and Easter celebrations. Thank you to the Youth Band and their director, Phi Tran, the Spirit Group and their leader Claudia Kellogg, our fabulous adult choir, and our cantors Kimber Bentley-Parks, Tim Parks, Tim Carter, Steve Hoffman, Carol Blair, Teresa Raridan, and Monette Velasco. We have some exciting music events coming up on the next several weeks. On May 11, we will have the music ensemble "Shalom" leading the music at our 9am and 11am Masses. This is a Latino musical ensemble led by Gerardo Larios who will be leading us in bi-lingual music selections. I have been meeting with Gerardo over the past several weeks, and I know that you will enjoy celebrating with us this day. Pentecost Sunday is June 8, and at the 9am Mass, the adult choir will be sharing beautiful music centered on the Holy Spirit. We will be joined by violin and cello, which will add another layer of beauty and warmth to the day's music. The following Sunday, June 15, be prepared to raise your voice and clap your hands as we offer a morning of contemporary music. The Spirit Group will join with the adult choir at both the 9am and 11am Masses singing music with a Gospel flair, featuring Tim Parks on piano, Nathan Atwater on electric bass and Monette Velasco on solo vocals. One of God's greatest gifts is the gift of music. And like many of His gifts, it comes in a variety of styles. Regardless of the musical style, I encourage everyone to focus on praising God and singing joyfully to the Lord! EXTRAORDINARY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS FOR THE HOME BOUND The Holy Church has given us laity the opportunity to bring the Body of Christ to the sick and shut-in Catholics since This ministry continues to be a blessing for those who give as well as for those who receive. We have an immediate need for substitute home bound E.E.M.'s during vacation times. If you have any questions about this specific need call Jean Knudson at , or if you'd like to register and train to become a home bound E.E.M. please call Deacon Gerhard Stadel at or the church office at.

Well, Eucharist is a Greek word that means Thanksgiving. It refers to the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus truly present in Holy Communion. What was once an ordinary piece of bread and an ordinary cup of wine, has now been changed(transubstantiated) into the body and blood of Jesus. In other words, just like Jesus changed the substance of water into wine at Cana, the priest, through the power of Jesus and the Holy Spirit given to him at his ordination, changes the substances of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus at the consecration. On April 12 th the Ruiz-Jimenez family of Tijuana, Mexico received a room addition on their house thanks to a collection of sponsors including various families from St. Juliana Church. The family plans to use the room as a convenience store for the neighborhood. Bernarda and Jose moved to Tijuana 20 years ago with their 11 children from Campeche, Mexico. She said it was beautiful there, but no jobs. They joined Corazon 13 years ago. For Corazon, Bernarda volunteers with child care, laying cement floors for her neighbors who are awaiting a Corazon house, and painting. She says, We really appreciate all of your help because my husband doesn t make much money, just enough to eat and make payments on the lot. Everything else has been through Corazon. We give thanks to our sponsors with love and blessings for the help you have so cheerfully offered us. If you would like to help another family please call Doug and Jean Knudson at ST.
