We are grateful to those who have built up St. Januarius to be a welcoming, active, and spiritual parish. With the Eucharist and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we strive to use the gifts and talents given to us by the Father to support the lives of parishioners at all age levels and stages of life. We also pledge to live our lives so that through our words and actions all may feel the presence of Jesus Christ in the world today. RECONCILIATION True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing. When two people meet heart to heart and work through old hurts, misunderstandings, and careless words, cleansing tears often flow and the encounter ends with an embrace that fills both with the warmth of a love too strong to fade. The readings this weekend assure us of this healthy release that comes with reconciliation. They give us the courage to reach out to someone with whom we need to reconcile ourselves, and give us the courage to ask for forgiveness from God, too. In the reading from Exodus, we see how God refuses again and again to give up on the Israelites. Even though they grow impatient with God and turn to false idols, God still calls them back. Luke's Gospel assures us that God rejoices when we turn away from sin. Paul's letter to Timothy encourages us, like Paul, to look back on our lives and recognize where God's patient mercy has been shown to us. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

2 Page 2 NOTES Welcome to Fr. John McKenna who is the new Administrator of our parish. He is coming to us from Epiphany Parish where he served as Pastor. The Annual Pork Roast Dinner will be on September 25. Anyone wishing to help with making applesauce, please come to the church hall on September 17. In 1683, John Sobieski, king of Poland, brought an army to the outskirts of Vienna to stop the advance of Muslim armies loyal to Mohammed IV in Constantinople. After Sobieski entrusted himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary, he and his soldiers thoroughly defeated the Muslims. Pope Innocent XI extended this feast to the entire Church. Tuesday: St. John Chrysostom - Born in Antioch around the year 349. Became a monk, was ordained a priest and exercised a fruitful ministry of preaching. Made Bishop of Constantinople in 397, strove to reform the morals of the clergy and laity alike. Wednesday: The Exaltation of the Holy Cross - Three crosses were found on the spot. SS Helena and Macarius, the bishop of Jerusalem, assuming that one was the True Cross and the other two belonged to the thieves crucified alongside Christ, devised an experiment to determine which was the True Cross. The three crosses were taken to a woman who was near death; when she touched the True Cross, she was healed. In celebration of the discovery of the Holy Cross, Constantine ordered the construction of churches at the site of the Holy Sepulchre and on Mount Calvary Thursday: Our Lady of Sorrows - Given to our Blessed Mother focuses on her intense suffering and grief during the passion and death of our Lord. Traditionally, this suffering was not limited to the passion and death event; rather, it comprised the seven colors or seven sorrows of Mary, which were foretold by the Priest Simeon. Friday: Ss. Cornelius and Cyprian - These two contemporaries, were linked by particular issue: what to do with those Christians who lapsed through fear in time of persecution, and then wished to return? Together Cornelius and Cyprian share a feast day to remind us of the unity that the Church should always practice and celebrate. This unity is a mark of the presence of Jesus who is at the Center. Saturday: St. Robert Bellarmine - Entered the Society of Jesus at Rome and was ordained a priest. Engaged in important debates in defense of the Catholic faith and taught theology at the Roman College. After being made a cardinal and named bishop of Capua, he worked in the Roman Congregations on numerous questions of the day. Please remember St. Januarius in your will.

A retreat is a wonderful way to recharge, not only our bodies, but a spiritual renewal also. The retreat will be held from Friday, September 30 thru Sunday, October 2. Diocesan News DIOCESAN CHOIR AUDITIONS - Auditions for the Diocesan Choir season will soon be held. The Choir, under the direction of Fr. Jim Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul s Cathedral throughout the year. Currently there are openings in the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. In addition to being good singers, potential members must be capable sight readers due to a limited rehearsal schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Diocesan Music Office at before August 15. PATRIOTIC ROSARY - Transfiguration Parish, 100 McKrell Rd., Russellton, PA 15076, will be praying the Patriotic Rosary for our country on the last Wednesday of the month until the elections. THE DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE - Bishop Zubik will be leading a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 8, This will be a time of renewal in faith and an opportunity to gather in prayer and friendship as a Diocesan family. Highlights will include celebrating Mass with Bishop Zubik, a sacred music concert by the Diocesan Choir, a Holy Hour, confession and tours of the shrine. This is a timely opportunity to attend a pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
