What above all concerns the ecumenical council is this: that the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine be safeguarded and taught more effectively that this certain and immutable doctrine, which is to be faithfully respected, needs to be explored and presented in a way that responds to the needs of our time.

Grandfather of the Diaconate

Universal Call to Holiness Engagement of the World

Father of the Diaconate

[T]he permanent Diaconate should be restored as an intermediate order [medius ordo] between the higher grades of the ecclesiastical hierarchy and the rest of the people of God, being as it were an expression of the needs and desires of the Christian communities, an animator of the service of diaconia of the Church among the local Christian communities, and a sign or sacrament of Christ the Lord himself, who came not to be served, but to serve.

Diaconate as medius ordo An animator of the faithful A sign or sacrament of Christ

The service of the deacon is the Church s service sacramentalized. Yours is not just one ministry among others, but it is truly meant to be a driving force for the Church s diakonia. (Detroit 1993)

The deacon receives a particular configuration to Christ.

The human personality..is to be a bridge and not an obstacle for others in their meeting with Jesus Christ. (PDV, no. 43)

Spiritual Intellectual Council of Trent Pastoral Vatican II Human Pope St. John Paul II

Revision of no. 875 In the French draft version, no distinction between deacons, priests and bishops In the Latin typical edition, Persona Christi Capitas does not apply to the deacon.

By divine institution some of the Christian faithful are marked with an indelible character and are constituted as sacred ministers by the sacrament of holy orders. They are thus consecrated and deputed so that, each according to his own grade, they may serve the people of God by a new and specific title. Canon 1008

Those who are constituted in the order of the episcopacy or the priesthood receive the mission and faculty to act in the person of Christ the Head; deacons are instead strengthened to serve the people of God in the diaconia of liturgy, word and charity. Canon 1009

So many of our brothers and sisters are living without the strength, light, and consolation born of friendship with Jesus Christ, without a community of faith to support them, without meaning and a goal in life.

my hope is that we will be moved by the fear of remaining shut up within structures which give us a false sense of security, within rules which make us harsh judges, within habits which make us feel safe, while at our door people are starving and Jesus does not tire of saying to us: Give them something to eat.

Image of Mercy Renewal of Missionary Church

# 1: New defined structures needed for deacons to mediate between the People of God and those on the periphery, and to bridge the gap between the shepherds and their flocks.

# 2: Deacons beyond the liturgy, coordinators of charity and mercy.

# 3: Formation for Catholic Social Teachings

In collaboration with his bishop and the priests of his diocese, the deacon has a special role to promote communion and to counter the strong emphasis on individualism prevalent in the United States.

Set aside for service, the deacon links together the individual and diverse segments of the community of believers.

# 4: No more lay deacons, thank God!

# 5: Clerical dress for deacons

Mini-priests / mini-jesuits?

# 6: Deacons and Pastoral Care of the Family

#7: Deacons as Administrators of Parishes

#8: Diaconalization of the Church

#9: Parochialization of the Diaconate

#10: Deacons are a good buy!
