3 April 14, 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE REC TOR H oly Week is the week which precedes the great feast of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. The Canadian Bishops write: during Holy Week the church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his entrance as messiah into Jerusalem. Every Mass on Passion Sunday begins with the blessings of the palms and the gospel of Jesus entering Jerusalem. Later in Mass, the account from St Mark of the passion of the Lord is proclaimed. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week are days that that bring us the description of the growing opposition against Jesus. He desires peace and unity and is willing to pay the price to bring about reconciliation. These three days present opportunities for us to focus on the three virtues of faith, hope and love. Try to focus on practicing one virtue with God s help for each of these days. The Chrism Mass for the Archdiocese is on Wednesday, March 28 at 5:00 pm at Holy Rosary Cathedral. In this special Mass the oils that are used in the sacraments are blessed by the Archbishop: the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Chrism. Also, the priests renew their priestly vows. Holy Thursday has no regular Masses only the Mass of the Last Supper in which we celebrate the sacrament of the Priesthood and the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Good Friday has no Mass rather there is the solemn celebration of the Passion of the Lord. Good Friday is a day of universal fast and abstinence for Catholics. Fasting means for people between 18 and 59 that you have only one full meal, two smaller meals and no snacks in between. Abstinence means that for people over 14 that you don t eat meat. The intention of fasting and Palm Sunday abstinence is to be closer to Jesus in His ways of sacrifice out of love for sinners. Holy Saturday only has one Mass the Easter Vigil. At this Mass three parts: the lighting of the Easter fire; the Liturgy of the Word which has Scripture readings that cover salvation history; and the Sacraments of Initiation for those who have been preparing wish to join our faith community. Easter Sunday brings us the solemn celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord God s love is stronger than sin, fear and death itself! We are invited to renew our Baptism promises. Try to participate in these liturgies in Holy Week in them you ll find the answer to all your joys, sorrows, passions and pains, thanks to God s loving mercy brought to us in Jesus Christ. Fr. Galvon T E N E B R A E I N H O LY W E E K Please note that there will be 3 special Tenebrae services on the Holy Week schedule. Latin for "shadows" or "darkness" is a Christian religious service celebrated in the Holy Week within Western Christianity, on the evening before or early morning of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Tenebrae is distinctive for its gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms are chanted or recited. 3
4 April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday C A T H E D R A L N E W S 2019 Adult Confirmation at the Cathedral The 2019 Adult confirmation will take place on June 9 at 12:30 pm at the Cathedral. All proceeds will go towards the parish building restoration fund. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support and we look forward to seeing you there. Fr. Larkin update Fr. Terry Larkin will temporarily be staying at Good Shepherd parish with Fr. Dion. The rectory there has no steps for Fr. Terry to navigate. The Cathedral rectory unfortunately has too many steps for Fr. Terry to handle safely. Please keep Fr. Terry s recovery in your prayers. A R C H D I O C E S A N N E W S Chrism Mass, April 17 at the Cathedral One of the most solemn and significant liturgies of our Church is the Chrism Mass. Join Archbishop Miller and the priests of the Archdiocese on Wednesday, April 17 at 5 pm at the Cathedral for the blessing of the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick, and the oil of chrism. 5 April 14, 2019 S U N D A Y M A S S PALM SUNDAY MASS READINGS At the Procession Luke 19, Christ enters Jerusalem First Reading Isaiah 50, 4-7 I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. I know that I shall not be put to shame. Responsorial Psalm 22 R. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me. Second Reading Philippians 2, 6-11 Jesus humbled himself. Therefore God highly exalted Him. Gospel Luke 22, 14-23, 56 The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. T Mass Reflection he Gospel of the blessing of the palms that we have heard [at the beginning of Mass] begins with the sentence: "Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem" (Lk 19, 28) the Church anticipates her response to the Gospel saying: "Let us follow the Lord". This clearly expresses the theme of Palm Sunday... Being Christian means considering the way of Jesus Christ as the right way for being human as that way which leads to our destination, to a completely fulfilled and authentic humanity Jesus walks before us and towards the heights. He leads us to what is great, pure. He leads us to that healthy air of the heights: to life in accordance with the truth; to courage that does not let itself be intimidated by the gossip of prevalent opinions; to patience that bears with and sustains the other. He guides people to be open towards the suffering, to those who are neglected. He leads us to stand loyally by the other, even when the situation becomes difficult. He leads us to the readiness to give help; to the goodness that does not let itself be disarmed, even by ingratitude. He leads us to love he leads us to God. Lastly, we must [look at the] Cross is also part of the ascent towards the heights of Jesus Christ, of the ascent to the heights of God the Cross is an expression of what love means: only those who lose themselves find themselves. To sum up: the following of Christ requires, as a first step, a reawakening of the desire to be authentic men and women and thus the reawakening of oneself for God. It then requires us to join the climbing party, in the communion of the Church. In the "we" of the Church we enter into communion with the "you" of Jesus Christ and thus reach the path to God. We are also asked to listen to the Word of Jesus Christ and to live it: in faith, hope and love. Thus we are on the way toward the definitive Jerusalem and, from this moment, in a certain way, we already find ourselves there, in the communion of all God's Saints.
