1 The Evening Mass f the Lrd s Supper marks the end f the liturgical seasn f Lent and the beginning f the slemn Easter Triduum. The themes f the Mass are the institutin f the Sacraments f Hly Eucharist and Hly Orders, and Jesus cmmandment f fraternal charity. The Mass includes the Washing f Feet (fllwing the hmily), the Receptin f the Hly Oils (at the Offertry), and the prcessin with the Blessed Sacrament (at the end f Mass). Arriving at the altar: The thurifer (Victria) and bat-bearer (Christian) bw and g directly t the credencetable side f the altar. The crssbearer (A.J.) and aclytes (Lexie and Rsa) bw t the altar. A.J. puts the crss in its stand and ges directly acrss between the tabernacle and the altar t his seat, bwing (NOT genuflecting) t the altar. Lexie and Rsa put the candles in the stands and g t their seats. All remain standing. The candles remain lighted. Each pair f trchbearers bws tgether and enters the first pew n the left side. Pat ascends the altar withut stpping r bwing and places the Bk f Gspels n the altar in the usual manner. Je, Tm, and Fr. Jim bw t the altar. Je and Tm g t their seats, and Fr. Jim ges t the altar. 3 Christian pens the bat and Fr. Jim puts incense in the censer and incenses the altar. Victria takes the censer frm Fr. Jim and bth Victria and Christian return t their seats. Beginning f Mass: At the Gspel: Lexie and Rsa ring the altar bells during the entire singing f the Glria. The utdr electrnic carilln bells are als rung during the Glria. After this, the altar bells are nt used again until the Easter Vigil, and are left near the seats. After the secnd Reading: Victria (with censer) and Christian (with incense bat) prceed directly t Fr. Jim at the chair, withut bwing r genuflecting when passing the tabernacle. Lexie and Rsa get the prcessinal candles and stand at the side f the altar nearest the amb; Fr. Jim puts incense in the censer while at the chair, assisted by Tm if necessary; Victria and Christian return and stand in frnt f Lexie and Rsa at the amb side f the altar; When Fr. Jim takes the Bk f Gspels frm the altar and turns tward the amb, all servers turn with him and lead him in a shrt prcessin t the amb. Lexie and Rsa stand n ppsite sides f the amb facing each ther Victria stands t Fr. Jim s left (the side nearest the altar) Christian stands t Fr. Jim s right Fr. Jim incenses the Bk f Gspels and reads the Gspel; The servers return t their seats after Fr. Jim finishes reading the Gspel. At the Offertry: Victria, Lexie and Rsa will prepare the altar in the usual manner with the chalice, cmmunin cups and missal. The Hly Oil presenters carry the Hly Oils t the altar during the Offertry Prcessin, walking in pairs. Ava and David, each carrying a vessel cntaining the Oil f the Sick Francesc and Faith, each carrying a vessel cntaining the Oil f Catechumens Bryce and Mia, each carrying a vessel cntaining the Sacred Chrism A.J., Lexie, Rsa, Je and Tm will assist Fr. Jim in the Receptin f the Hly Oils and placing them in the ambry. After each grup f presenters is finished, they step t the left side and wait there until all the ils and gifts have been presented. The Offertry Gift presenters fllw the Hly Oil presenters, walking in pairs. 4 Receptin f the Hly Oils: Intrductin 1. It is apprpriate that the il f the sick, the il f catechumens, and the hly chrism, which are blessed by the bishp during the Chrism Mass, be presented t and received by the lcal parish cmmunity. 2. The receptin f the hly ils may take place at the Mass f the Lrd's Supper n Hly Thursday r n anther day after the celebratin f the Chrism Mass. 3. The ils shuld be reserved in a suitable repsitry in the sanctuary r near the baptismal fnt. 4. The ils, in suitable vessels, are carried in the prcessin f the gifts, befre the bread and wine, by members f the assembly. 5. The ils are received by the priest and are then placed n a suitably prepared table in the sanctuary r in the repsitry where they will be reserved. 6. As each f the ils is presented, the fllwing r ther wrds may be used t explain the significance f the particular il. 7. The peple's respnse may be sung. Presenter(s) f the Oil f the Sick: The il f the sick. Priest: May the sick wh are aninted with this il experience the cmpassin f Christ and his saving lve, in bdy and sul. Priest: Thrugh aninting with this perfumed Chrism may children and adults, wh are baptized and cnfirmed, and presbyters, wh are rdained, experience the gracius gift f the Hly Spirit. Peple: Blessed be Gd frever. The bread and wine fr the Eucharist are then presented and received, and the Mass cntinues in the usual manner. As sn as the Offertry gifts have been presented, the six trchbearers get up and g dwn the side aisle t the back f the church t get their lighted trches. Abby will assist as needed. Three trchbearers line up in each f the tw side aisles and wait there. Makenzie, Alex and Lauren n the Blessed Mther side Evangeline, Cllin and Emily n the St. Jseph side After Fr. Jim purs the wine and water int the chalice, Lexie and Rsa wait by the credence table. D nt bring the water, dish and twel yet. Victria and Christian immediately bring the censer and bat t the altar. Fr. Jim puts incense in the censer, incenses the altar, then gives the censer back t Victria; Facing Fr. Jim, Victria and Christian then: Hly Thursday 2019 Page 4

5 Bw Victria incenses Fr. Jim with three duble swings f the censer Bw again Victria and Christian take the censer and bat t the frnt f the altar. Christian mtins fr the peple t stand. Victria and Christian bw, Victria incenses the cngregatin with three duble swings (center, left, right), Victria and Christian bw again and return t their seats. While Victria is incensing the cngregatin, Lexie and Rsa bring the water, dish and twel t the altar, and Fr. Jim washes his hands. After this is cmpleted, the servers line up alngside the amb in the fllwing rder: Lexie, with prcessinal candle Victria, with censer Christian, with incense bat Rsa, with prcessinal candle A.J. Je and Tm fllw, n ppsite sides f the altar. During the Eucharistic Prayer: At the beginning f the Preface, after Fr. Jim says Let us give thanks t the Lrd ur Gd and the peple respnd It is right and just, the trchbearers begin walking slwly tward the frnt f the church, stpping when they get t the first pew. At the Sanctus ( Hly, Hly, Hly Lrd, Gd f Hsts ), the ther servers cme dwn frm the sanctuary t the frnt f the altar and the trchbearers mve frm the side aisles acrss in frnt f the pews. The final psitining f everyne in frnt f the altar shuld lk like this: ALTAR A.J. Rsa Christian Victria Lexie Tm Je Lauren Alex Makenzie Evangeline Cllin Emily Abby All face the altar; the servers kneel n the bttm step, and the trchbearers kneel n the flr behind the servers; Christian puts sme incense in the censer; On Hly Thursday, the altar bells are nt used. The clacker is nt used when Fr. Jim extends his hands ver the chalice at the Epiclesis, but nly at the elevatins f the Hst and chalice. 6 At Cmmunin: After the Our Father, all the altar servers stand and return t the area alngside the amb. The trchbearers return t the back f the church by way f the side aisles, leave the trches there, and immediately cme up the center aisle t receive Cmmunin. Lexie and Rsa put the candles back int the stands, and the five altar servers remain near the amb until after Cmmunin. All five altar servers receive Hly Cmmunin alngside the altar. D nt g dwn the steps t the frnt f the altar t receive Cmmunin. After receiving Cmmunin: Victria, Christian and A.J. assist Je in clearing the altar during the distributin f Hly Cmmunin. Lexie and Rsa light the candles at the Repsitry altar and return t their seats; After psitining the trchbearers in the center aisle, Abby ges t the chair t serve as bkbearer fr the Pstcmmunin Prayer. After Cmmunin: When Cmmunin is almst finished, Abby leads the trchbearers up the center aisle behind the last cmmunicants in line. The trchbearers, each carrying a lighted trch, stp at the first lng pew, and stand facing the altar. The trchbearers shuld fllw the last peple in line t receive Cmmunin, walking up the aisle and standing right next t the pews (nt in the center f the aisle). The trchbearer pairings are: Lauren and Emily Alex and Cllin Makenzie and Evangeline The fur canpy bearers get the canpy and stand in the frnt crss-aisle in frnt f the amb. As sn as the distributin f Hly Cmmunin is finished: Victria takes the censer, Christian takes the incense bat, and they bth stand at the ft f the steps in frnt f the altar; A.J. takes the prcessinal crss and mves directly t his psitin at the head f the prcessin; Only the cibrium cntaining the Blessed Sacrament remains n the altar. As sn as Fr. Jim leaves the altar and returns t his seat, Lexie and Rsa (carrying the prcessinal candles) mve directly t either end f the altar and stand facing each ther. Abby remains at the seats t serve as bk-bearer; Abby hlds the bk while Fr. Jim reads the Pstcmmunin Prayer, after which she gets the clacker and mves int psitin in the center aisle fr the prcessin; Prcessin t the Altar f Repse: There is n blessing r dismissal. Immediately fllwing the Pstcmmunin Prayer, Fr. Jim remves his chasuble and puts n the white cpe (Je r Tm will assist). Fr. Jim, Tm and Je mve t the ft f the steps in frnt f the altar, where Victria and Christian are already waiting with the censer and bat. Lexie Hly Thursday 2019 Page 6

7 and Rsa mve directly t the center aisle and stand n each side f A.J. at the head f the prcessin. Abby walks behind A.J. with the clacker. The trchbearers will already be in the center aisle, between A.J. and the altar. The canpy bearers are in frnt f the amb. Fr. Jim puts incense int the censer. Je, Tm, Victria and Christian all kneel while Fr. Jim incenses the Blessed Sacrament. Tm puts the humeral veil n Fr. Jim s shulders. When Fr. Jim ascends the altar t get the cibrium cntaining the Blessed Sacrament, the canpy bearers mve t the center aisle. As sn as Fr. Jim gets under the canpy, all turn and slwly prcess dwn the center aisle. Victria (with the censer) and Christian (with the incense bat) walk in frnt f the canpy, but nt underneath it. Je and Tm walk immediately behind the trchbearers. *** NOTE TO MUSIC MINISTRY *** The chir begins singing the hymn Pange Lingua when Fr. Jim takes the cibrium frm the altar and mves t the canpy. The singing f this hymn cntinues fr the entire prcessin, repeating verses frm the beginning if necessary. The final tw verses (the Tantum Erg ) are nt sung until Fr. Jim has arrived at the Altar f Repse with the Blessed Sacrament. If the chir is in the middle f a verse when the prcessin reaches the Altar f Repse, that verse is cmpleted and the Tantum Erg verses fllw it immediately. Three times during the prcessin, everyne stps. All turn tward Fr. Jim carrying the Blessed Sacrament. Tm puts incense in the censer. All bw tward the Blessed Sacrament, and Victria incenses the Blessed Sacrament with three triple swings f the censer. Abby sunds the clacker three times, crdinating the timing with each set f three swings f the censer. The three stps will be when Fr. Jim is: In the center aisle acrss frm the statue f the Sacred Heart f Jesus In the back f the church In the side aisle next t the statue f the Sacred Heart f Jesus When the prcessin reaches the frnt f the church: A.J., Lexie and Rsa mve t the center aisle and stand facing the altar. The trchbearers, with Abby nw leading them, cntinue straight acrss and line up single file in frnt f the pew facing the Altar f Repse. The canpy bearers stp after crssing the center aisle. Tm, Je, Victria, Christian and Fr. Jim g t the frnt f the Altar f Repse. Abby gives the clacker t Je. The canpy bearers take the canpy back dwn the side aisle and put it in the sacristy. Fr. Jim places the cibrium n the crpral in frnt f the Repsitry tabernacle (r in the Repsitry itself, but des nt clse the dr). Je takes the humeral veil frm Fr. Jim. Fr. Jim incenses the Blessed Sacrament, then clses the dr. (** NOTE ** the dr f the Repsitry tabernacle is nt suppsed t be clsed until after the incensatin f the Blessed Sacrament.) 8 Tm, Victria, Christian and Fr. Jim genuflect and mve t the center aisle. All bw t the altar and all leave in silence. The trchbearers d nt leave with everyne else, but remain standing in frnt f the altar f repse. There is n music r singing at this time. As the servers and Fr. Jim leave, Abby r Je will dim all the sanctuary lights except fr the Last Supper panel. At the same time, either Pete Kanaitis r Tm Jenkins will turn ff all f the lights in the church except fr light switch #6. This will leave the church in darkness, with nly the Altar f Repse illuminated. The trchbearers remain fr a minute r tw after the thers have left; at Je s signal, all bw and leave in single file by the side aisle. After the trchbearers have reached the back f the church, Pete r Tm will turn n ne rw f lights n the side f the church nearest the exit drs (r the vestibule lights, if that seems mre practical) s that peple will be able t see t leave. The church shuld remain in semi-darkness during the perid f adratin that fllws. The church will remain pen fr quiet persnal prayer and adratin until 10:00 PM, at which time the Altar f Repse will be taken dwn and the church will be prepared fr the Gd Friday services.
