3 Dear Parishioners: Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Faith Formation News Page 3 "He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two." This Sunday we read the first sending of the Apostles to preach, teach, and heal. For many of us, it can be easy to think we "just don't have enough" to be disciples and evangelists ourselves. We don't have enough education and training. We don't have enough experience talking to people about Jesus. We don't pray enough. We don't have enough faith. If you look at the Apostles in today's Gospel reading, they didn't have much either. "No food, no sack, no money in their belts." They didn't plan out their itinerary or book their lodging in advance. From what we know of the Apostles, they were not the religiously trained and educated ones. They were fishermen, tax collectors, and political activists. But what does being a fisherman require? Someone like Peter needed a strong work ethic to rise at strange hours. He needed patient calm to wait for the catch. Once ashore, he needed a savvy mind to fetch a good price for his labors. As Peter became a fisher of men, he would need diligence to persevere through the hard journeys, long days, and persecution that awaited him. He would need patient calm with those who disagreed with him. As the leader of the Apostles, he would need a savvy mind to navigate challenges facing the early Church. From one perspective, Peter has nothing to offer the mission of Jesus. Thinking more creatively, one can see that -- joined with faith and love -- perhaps Peter had everything he needed. Jesus sends you as well. As you take stock of your own talents, consider how they might be offered as a gift to others. Maybe you already have more than enough. Yours in Christ, Brian T. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Collection for Funds & Toiletries July 28 & 29, 2018 The second collection at all Masses the 5th weekend of the month will support the efforts of the SVdP Conference here at St. Bernard s. The money you give supports people primarily living in our parish boundaries who are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries and gas, and pay for utility bills. Also, on the last weekend of the month, there will be receptacles in the Church for the collection of personal-sized toiletry items for the homeless. The SVdP facilities in Phoenix, which provide showers and barber services, are in constant shortage of such items. Needed: personal or travelsized items including: soap, shaving cream, disposable razors, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. ATTENTION, Please! From the Diocese of Phoenix: Beginning this fiscal year, July 1, 2018, all volunteers will be required to complete their Safe Environment Training renewal every year. This change affects all ministers and volunteers in the Diocese of Phoenix. SET Renewals must be done after July 1st to count. The website address for Safe Environment Training has changed. The new website is for renewal completion. If you have any questions about the policy changes, please contact Shirley Smalley, Safe Environment Coordinator: Native American and Black Indian Mission Collection July 15, 2018 Catholics in the U.S. are familiar with all kinds of second collections taken up in their parish churches. But only one can claim status as the first ever! Recognizing a need to call the faithful to support missionary work among African American and Native American Catholics, the U.S. Catholic bishops established this Catholic Church charity for the Catholic Missions in 1884 to administer a national collection the first of its kind in the United States to support missionary work. Ever since the first Collection in 1884, the Commission has administered the yearly, national Black and Indian Mission Collection. The generosity of the good People of God allows the Commission to give helpful grants to dioceses across the country to operate schools, parishes, and other missionary services that build the Body of Christ in Native American, Alaska Native, and Black Catholic communities.
