CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT 10:30 a.m. December 9, 2018 ELW Setting 1 PRELUDE Bethlehem Morning Morris Chapman CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS GATHERING En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo. Amén In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
GATHERING SONG (ELW No. 251) APOSTOLIC GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Blessed God, who danced in our hearts, filling us with the knowledge of your presence: let your proclamation sing forth from us as it sang from the lips of Hannah, Elizabeth, and Mary, announcing the coming of your promise and the fulfillment of your desire; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Sit LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. You call all nations to walk in your light and to seek your ways of justice and peace, for the night is past, and the dawn of your coming is near. Bless us as we light the second candle of this wreath. Rouse us from sleep, that we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes and welcome him into our hearts and homes, for he is our light and our salvation. Blessed be God forever. Amen. ADVENT HYMN (ELW No. 240) Sing Verse 2 only
READINGS FROM HOLY SCRIPTURE (All texts are from The Message Translation) FIRST READING I Samuel 2:1-10 Hannah prayed: I m bursting with God-news! I m walking on air. I m laughing at my rivals. I m dancing my salvation. 2-5 Nothing and no one is holy like God, no rock mountain like our God. Don t dare talk pretentiously not a word of boasting, ever! For God knows what s going on. He takes the measure of everything that happens. The weapons of the strong are smashed to pieces, while the weak are infused with fresh strength. The well-fed are out begging in the streets for crusts, while the hungry are getting second helpings. The barren woman has a houseful of children, while the mother of many is bereft God brings death and God brings life, brings down to the grave and raises up. God brings poverty and God brings wealth; he lowers, he also lifts up. He puts poor people on their feet again; he rekindles burned-out lives with fresh hope, Restoring dignity and respect to their lives a place in the sun! For the very structures of earth are God s; he has laid out his operations on a firm foundation. He protectively cares for his faithful friends, step by step, but leaves the wicked to stumble in the dark. No one makes it in this life by sheer muscle! God s enemies will be blasted out of the sky, crashed in a heap and burned. God will set things right all over the earth, he ll give strength to his king, he ll set his anointed on top of the world!
Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING Romans 12: Love from the center of who you are; don t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle Don t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they re happy; share tears when they re down. Get along with each other; don t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don t be the great somebody. Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (ELW s103) Sung by congregation P El Santo Evangelio según Lucas, capítulo uno. P C The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the 1 st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. ( Gloria a ti, oh Señor!)
HOLY GOSPEL Luke 1: In the sixth month of Elizabeth s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the Galilean village of Nazareth to a virgin engaged to be married to a man descended from David. His name was Joseph, and the virgin s name, Mary. Upon entering, Gabriel greeted her: Good morning! You re beautiful with God s beauty, Beautiful inside and out! God be with you She was thoroughly shaken, wondering what was behind a greeting like that. But the angel assured her, Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus. He will be great, be called Son of the Highest. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; He will rule Jacob s house forever no end, ever, to his kingdom. 34 Mary said to the angel, But how? I ve never slept with a man. 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; Therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! Nothing, you see, is impossible with God. And Mary said, Yes, I see it all now: I m the Lord s maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say. Then the angel left her.
39-45 Mary didn t waste a minute. She got up and traveled to a town in Judah in the hill country, straight to Zachariah s house, and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, and sang out exuberantly, You re so blessed among women, and the babe in your womb, also blessed! And why am I so blessed that the mother of my Lord visits me? The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears, The babe in my womb skipped like a lamb for sheer joy. Blessed woman, who believed what God said, believed every word would come true! And Mary said, I m bursting with God-news; I m dancing the song of my Savior God. God took one good look at me, and look what happened I m the most fortunate woman on earth! What God has done for me will never be forgotten, the God whose very name is holy, set apart from all others. His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him. He bared his arm and showed his strength, scattered the bluffing braggarts. He knocked tyrants off their high horses, pulled victims out of the mud. The starving poor sat down to a banquet; the callous rich were left out in the cold. He embraced his chosen child, Israel; he remembered and piled on the mercies, piled them high. It s exactly what he promised, beginning with Abraham and right up to now. 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months and then went back to her own home. P: El evangelio del Salvador. P: The Gospel of the Savior. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

APOSTLES CREED With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A As we await the coming of Christ, we pray in hope for the church, the world, and all of creation. A brief silence.
