Everyone is welcome to attend and join Gay on this very special day. She has received much help and support from our Parish and will be delighted to welcome you to her ordination. You may also wish to note in your diary that Gay will be presiding over the Eucharist for the first time in the Minster on Sunday 9 th July at 11am. Anyone who would like to attend is very welcome and Gay will also welcome everyone s prayerful support for such a time as this. The service will be followed by a bring and share lunch. If you wish to attend the lunch please contact Sue Allen ( ) or Sheila Pomeroy ( ) as they are co-ordinating the event. On Saturday July 15 th at 2.30pm in St Margaret s there will be a Thanksgiving Service for the life of George Grimmett. George was a Churchwarden in our Parish. We are going to study the first three chapters of the Book of Revelation. These chapters contain letters written to seven local churches in what is now Turkey. The Book begins by describing itself as the revelation of Jesus Christ. Rev. John Stott said: A church with its back to the wall, fighting for survival, must see Christ. This is exactly what happens when we read the Book of Revelation we gain a clearer view of Jesus. You are welcome to join us at 7.30 pm on alternate Tuesdays. 5 Our Friends in South Sudan Dear friends Headline prayer: anxiety for condition of refugees. More than 2 million of South Sudan's approx 13 million population are now refugees - roughly one million in Uganda, 800,000 in Sudan, and substantial numbers in Ethiopia and Congo. World Food Programme, UNHCR and other agencies are struggling to provide for them, and lack of funds means rations are reduced to one meal a day; clean water is scarce, and schools or clinics even more scarce. And even in the camps there is no safety: some SPLAsoldiers this week crossed the border, raided a village in Moyo (Uganda), abducted 13 South Sudanese refugees and drove them back to South Sudan, raiding cattle on the way. An international summit meeting in Uganda last week resulted in pledges of $358 million, but that only covers part of the $2 billion needed. The Pope has given $500m, channelled through Caritas, but it is for health, education and agriculture within South Sudan. Donors at the meeting also put pressure on the warring factions to end the fighting. Pray that international donors would give generously to match the need, and that the fighting would end. Maridi continues peaceful: but pray for all who are enduring hardship because of rising prices and a collapsing economy (civil servants not paid for over 4 months), and the effects of insecurity in neighbouring areas. Pray also for Bishop Justin, his clergy and people; for the Chaima Christian Institute, with Revd. Atovura Martin, Principal, and his staff; for Lynn Treneary, CMS Mission Partner, due on home leave soon and planning to visit Heytesbury Deanery; and this week pray for the Western Archdeaconry, led by Rev. Canon Stanly Modogu Gugu. Ø Pray for revival meetings and teaching which are taking place in the archdeaconry. Ø Pray for the huge number of Christians who were displaced from their parishes by violence and are now scattered in Maridi town. Fighting continues: clashes are reported from Kaya town, Yei River state; from the banks of the Nile in the north, and from greater Jonglei; around Wau, and in various parts of Equatoria. And it is not all government or opposition troops: cattle raiding with substantial loss of life is reported form Eastern Lakes state, and the governors of Twic and Gogrial states are so concerned at the level of cattle raiding and revenge attacks, they are meeting to form a plan. Pray that the Holy Spirit of peace would guide and inspire their planning. Fragmentation: Where clashes are between official forces, they may be more readily controlled; but the continuing fragmentation of militias and political groupings make the peace even harder to re-establish, as David Shearer (Chief of UNMISS) commented this week. Two new political groups were launched this week: one ex-member of parliament, Abraham Majak Maliab, has resigned in protest over poor security and formed a new rebel movement based in Western Lakes, while a previous governor of WarrapState, Lewis Anei Kuendit, has formed the "Republican Party" and claims it is non-violent. Keep praying that, despite all these complications, the peace agreement may yet hold and be properly implemented. The IGAD foreign ministers meet in Juba this week - pray that their deliberations will be influential in advancing the peace process. Pray also for the meeting this week of all army chiefs who supply troops for the UN protection force (UNMISS) - may their soldiers be well-disciplined and a force for good. The food situation in the country is still bad, although no part is now officially in famine. But 2 million people are still at risk of starvation, including 45,000 in the original famine areas of Leer, Koch and Mayendit counties. "Catastrophic" food insecurity is reported from Jonglei; from Yei. Lainya, Morobo, Magwi and Kajo-Keji, formerly the "greenbelt" of the country; and from Western Upper Nile and Northern Bahr el-ghazal. The causes, apart from the fighting, are displacement of people from their land, and the collapse of markets and trading - together with high prices due to the economic situation. Jonglei, however, expects better crops this year than last, as farmers have largely returned to their land, and the rains have been good. Pray that more people may be able to return and cultivate their land in peace, and that meanwhile the relief agencies will be able to reach every part with food aid, unhindered by army or other sources of rouble.
