Liturgy of the Palms with Processon and Choral Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. Order of Service for 20 March 2016 The Liturgy of the Palms Priest Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. People Hosanna in the highest. From the Chancel Steps All children and young people are invited to come to the Chancel steps for a conversation. Dear friends in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s paschal mystery. On this day our Lord Jesus Christ entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph. The people welcomed him with palms and shouts of praise, but the path before him led to self giving, suffering, and death. Today we greet him as our King, although we know his crown is thorns and his throne a cross. We follow him this week from the glory of the palms to the glory of the resurrection by way of the dark road of suffering and death. United with him in his suffering on the cross, may we share his resurrection and new life. Let us pray. Assist us mercifully with your help, Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy into the celebration of those mighty acts whereby you give us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gospel of the Palms The Lord be with you. Sung And with thy spirit. X The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke. Sung Glory be to thee, O Lord. After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? just say this, The Lord needs it. So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,

Why are you untying the colt? They said, The Lord needs it. Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven! Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Teacher, order your disciples to stop. He answered, I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out. Luke V/ The Gospel of Christ. R/ Praise be to thee, O Christ. Blessing and Distribution of Palms Priest The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; X Bless these palms and let them be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (During the distribution of palms, the Choir will chant Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29) The Procession Priest Let us go forth in peace. People X In the Name of Christ. Amen.

Processional Hymn All Glory, Laud, and Honour All glory, laud, and honour to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. 1 Thou art the King of Israel, thou David s royal Son, who in the Lord s Name comest, the King and blessèd One. All glory, laud, and honour 2 The company of angels are praising thee on high, and mortal men and all things created make reply. All glory, laud, and honour The Collect of the Day Almighty and everliving God, in tender love for all our human race you sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take our flesh and suffer death upon a cruel cross. May we follow the example of his great humility, and share in the glory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. ST. THEODULPH 3 The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went; our praise and prayer and anthems before thee we present. All glory, laud, and honour 4 To thee, before thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; to thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. All glory, laud, and honour 5 Thou didst accept their praises; accept the prayers we bring, who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious King. All glory, laud, and honour The Proclamation of the Word (please be seated for the readings) A Reading from the Book of Isaiah. The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord Godhelps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let

us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Isaiah a The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM In te, Domine, speravi. 10 HAVE mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble, / and mine eye is consumed for very heaviness; yea, my soul and my body. 11 For my life is waxen old with sorrow, / and my years with mourning. 12 My strength faileth me because of my adversity, / and my bones are consumed. 13 I am become a reproach because of all mine enemies, / and especially unto my neighbours; 14 And they of mine acquaintance are afraid of me; / and they that see me in the street flee from me. 15 I am clean forgotten, as a dead man out of mind; / I am become like a broken vessel. 16 For I have heard the whispering of the multitude, and fear is on every side; / while they conspire together against me, and plot to take away my life. 17 But my hope hath been in thee, O LORD; / I have said, 'Thou art my God.' 18 My times are in thy hand; / deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. 19 Show thy servant the light of thy countenance, / and save me for thy mercy's sake. A Reading from the Epistle to the Philippians. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew Plainsong with responses by Vittoria, edited by F. Burgess The congregation may remain seated until the words: Now from the sixth hour, Then stand at that point for the remainder of the Passion.

The Sermon The Rev d Fr. Jonathan Rowe Silence Sung The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, X and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the Faithful (Please kneel, if able, or you may be seated) Response: Lord, hear our prayer. MERBECKE

Passiontide Confession and Absolution Lord Jesus Christ, we confess we have failed you as did your first disciples. We ask for your mercy and your help. When we take our ease rather than watch with you: Lord, forgive us. Christ have mercy. When we bestow a kiss of peace yet nurse enmity in our hearts: Lord, forgive us. Christ have mercy. When we strike at those who hurt us rather than stretch out our hands to bless: Lord, forgive us. Christ have mercy. When we deny that we know you for fear of the world and its scorn: Lord, forgive us. Christ have mercy. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; X pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Sung The Peace (please stand) The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Hymn My Song is Love Unknown 1 My song is love unknown, my Saviour s love to me; love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? LOVE UNKNOWN 3 Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing; resounding all the day Hosannas to their king. Then Crucify! is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 2 He came from his blest throne, salvation to bestow; but men made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But O, my friend, my friend indeed, Who at my need his life did spend! 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease and gainst him rise.

5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine. This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Prayer over the gifts Gracious God, the suffering and death of Jesus, your only Son, makes us pleasing in your sight. Alone we can do nothing, but through his sacrifice, may we receive your love and mercy. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving (Please kneel, if able, or you may be seated) Sung Sung Sung The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. MERBECKE It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. For the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and Man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross for us sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: Sung Holy, holy, holy Lord, COMMUNION SERVICE RUTTER God of power and might, Heav'n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take

our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ s most holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants, with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: People We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. The Lord s Prayer And now, as our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to pray: Sung Our Father, who art in heaven, R. LANGDON hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Silence People Fraction (Breaking of the Bread) Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore, let us keep the feast. We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, Trusting in our own righteousness, But in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy So much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, Whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, So to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, And to drink his blood, That we may evermore dwell in him, And he in us. Amen. Sung People Agnus Dei (O Lamb of God) COMMUNION SERVICE RUTTER Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world: give us your peace. Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to the banquet of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. The Communion All people are welcome to receive the Blessed Sacrament (Holy Communion) at our Altar. You may kneel or stand to receive.

Hymn during Communion And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love UNDE ET MEMORES 1 And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary s Tree, and having with us him that pleads above, we here present, we here set forth to thee that only Offering perfect in thine eyes, the one, true, pure, immortal Sacrifice. 2 Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo! between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of thy Son our Lord. 3 And then for these, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal; O fold them closer to thy mercy s breast, O do thine utmost for their soul s true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. 4 And so we come; O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this Food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee. The Prayer after Communion God our help and strength, you have satisfied our hunger with this eucharistic food. Strengthen our faith, that through the death and resurrection of your Son, we may be led to salvation, for he is Lord now and for ever. Amen. The Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more

than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the blessing of God almighty, the X Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Closing Hymn Ride On! Ride On in Majesty! 1 Ride on! ride on in majesty! Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry; O Saviour meek, pursue thy road with palms and scattered garments strowed 2 Ride on! ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; O Christ, thy triumphs now begin o er captive death and conquered sin. WINCHESTER NEW 3 Ride on! ride on in majesty! The angel-squadrons of the sky look down with sad and wondering eyes to see the approaching Sacrifice. 4 Ride on! ride on in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh, the Father on his sapphire throne expects his own anointed Son. 5 Ride on! ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; bow thy meek head to mortal pain; then take, O God, thy power, and reign. The Dismissal V/ Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God.

All through Lent, we have avoided using the word Alleluia. At Easter, whenever you hear an Alleluia in church, grab your bells, and ring them as hard as you can! The effect will be a little bit unexpected, a little bit chaotic, but definitely boisterous and enthusiastic: just like Easter itself! Spring Sale The Spring Sale will be held on Saturday 30 April.
