PIUS X PARISH E. 13th Place, Aurora, CO, Office: Fax: Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30-5:00 pm STPIUSXPARISH.ORG & STPIUSXSCHOOL.NET School: YEAST OF TLL faints All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows, Day of All the Saints, Solemnity of All Saints, or Feast of All Saints is a solemnity celebrated on November 1 st by the Roman Catholic Church and various Protestant denominations, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, in honour of all the saints, known and unknown. The liturgical celebration begins at Vespers on the evening of 31 October and ends at the close of 1 November. It is thus the day before All Souls' Day. Hallowmas is another term for the feast, and was used by Shakespeare in this sense. However, a few recent writers have applied this term as a synonym for the triduum of Hallowtide: the three days from 31 October (All Hallows Eve or Halloween), to November 1 st (All Saints Day) and November 2 nd (the Day of the Dead or All Souls Day). What is the origin of this Solemnity? In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death for Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighbouring dioceses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relics, to divide them, and to join in a common feast, as is shown by the invitation of St. Basil of Caesarea (379) to the bishops of the province of Pontus. Frequently groups of martyrs suffered on the same day, which naturally led to a joint commemoration. In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be assigned to each. But the Church, feeling that every martyr should be venerated, appointed a common day for all. The first trace of this we find in Antioch on the Sunday after Pentecost. We also find mention of a common day in a sermon of St. Ephrem the Syrian (373), and in the 74 th homily of St. John Chrysostom (407). At first only martyrs and St. John the Baptist were honoured by a special day. Other saints were added gradually, and increased in number when a regular process of canonization was established; still, as early as 411 there is in the Chaldean Calendar a "Commemoratio Confessorum" for the Friday after Easter. In the West Boniface IV, 13 May, 609, or 610, consecrated the Pantheon in Rome to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs, ordering an anniversary. Gregory III ( ) consecrated a chapel in the Basilica of St. Peter to all the saints and fixed the anniversary for November 1 st. A basilica of the Apostles already existed in Rome, and its dedication was annually remembered on May 1 st. Gregory IV ( ) extended the celebration on November 1 st to the entire Church. The vigil (Hallows Eve) seems to have been held as early as the feast itself. The octave was added by Sixtus IV ( ).

PIUS X SCHOOL NEWS We had a wonderful time at our bowling fundraiser last weekend! We raised about $325 to put in our 8 th grade trip fund for next year. We are working to finish all of our saint reports so that we are ready for our Festival of Saints on Oct. 31 st. You are welcome to come to the church basement between the hours of 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. that day to see our saint projects! Please get your tickets to our Annual Gala: The Roaring 20 s, by going to Tickets are only $75 each for a night of dinner, dancing, drinks, and auctions. This event is a lot of fun and all funds raised will help the school purchase new windows, new tables and chairs, and new playground equipment.
