3 Holy Family Parish ORDINARY TIME I have written about Ordinary Time in the past, but it is still good to reflect on what this is, and why the Church celebrates something called Ordinary Time. This year, we will have 5 weeks of Ordinary Time before we begin the season of Lent, our preparation for Easter. Christmas and Easter are the most important times of our Christian lives, but Ordinary Time is where our relationship is lived every day. In our families, we celebrate anniversaries, weddings, birthdays and baptisms, but these are scattered throughout the year. In between, we develop and grow in our human relationships. The special moments are made more special because of the effort we put forth between them. It is the same with our relationship with God. During Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter we make needed adjustments in our faith lives; but then these have to become a part of our life during the rest of the year. So how do we do this? Following are 5 suggestions I came across in an article by Dcn. Mike Bickerstaff of The Integrated Catholic Life website: Surrender to Christ There is nothing we can do to be saved or to progress in the spiritual life except by Christ. Begin each new day by surrendering yourself to Him and His Will. Replace the habit of pride with the practice of humility, trusting in the Lord. Enter into and Remain in a State of Grace We can make no progress in the spiritual life if we are not in a state of sanctifying grace. Those who believed and were baptized were freed of sin and its eternal punishment. They were justified by Christ s grace and said to be in a state of sanctifying grace. If they have not knowingly and freely committed a mortal sin, they remain so. If you are not in a state of sanctifying grace, you need to be. If you are not baptized, seek to be baptized in the Catholic Church. If you are baptized, but have committed a mortal sin, that sin needs to be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Develop a daily prayer habit If we love someone, we desire to be with that person. Prayer is how we spend time with God. Daily prayers of Praise, Adoration, Petition, Intercession, or Thanksgiving Devotionals, such as the Rosary, and liturgy, such as the Divine Office and Mass are great practices. Meditate on the Mass Readings Spend time each week prayerfully reading and thinking about the coming s Mass readings; what they mean and how they apply to your life. Be Christ to Others Jesus Christ came not to be served, but to serve. We cannot claim to follow Christ if we do not serve those people He places in our lives. Service requires us to be Christ to others, but we are also called to serve those we do not easily recognize. In what way can you help others? Who can you serve? Take these questions to daily prayer and ask Jesus to show you those in need for whom you can make a difference. Then get on with the Lord s good work. I hope some of these will find a way into your daily faith life. God bless Fr. In January, we study the Alaskan State and The Rainforest, including the people, animals, and habitat respective to each. Mrs. Steiner Contribution Statements: Please note that when you receive your contribution statement in the mail there will be two statements one from St. John s or St. Gabriel s and one from Holy Family. You will need to add the two together. Also you will receive a statement for your donations to the Annual Appeal and We Belong to Christ from the Diocese. A DAY OF PRAYER, PENANACE & PILGRIMAGE FOR LIFE The Shrine of our lady of Guadalupe will host a day of prayer, penance and pilgrimage for Life for anyone unable to participate in the March for Life in Washington D.C. The following will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 22 (the 40th Anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision) Following the Shrine s 12:15 pm Mass, participants will be invited to gather at the Memorial of the Unborn. At about 1:00 pm, Mr. Chris Ruff, Director of the Office of Ministries & Social Concerns for the Diocese of LaCrosse will give a short pro-life reflection talk. At about 1:15 pm, the Friars will lead the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Opportunity for Confession is available an hour before Mass and following Mass. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at 3:30 pm, with recitation of the Rosary and the praying of Vespers led by the Friars. Benediction is at 4:25 pm. 4 DIOCESAN ANNUAL APPEAL /2013 We would like to thank the following parishioners who have made the sacrifice to support the annual appeal this year. Thursday Morning Men s Group The men s group will begin discussing Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus at the Jan. 24 th meeting. This group meets at 6:30 am each Thursday morning, extends an invitation to all parish men interested in discovering new paths to living their faith. If you are interested, or even think you might like something like this, plan to stop and see for yourself. Pedretti and Clara Dale in your prayers. Bernard s funeral was held on Friday, January 18th at St. Gabriel s and Clara s funeral was held on Saturday, January 19th at St. Johns. May God grant them eternal life and comfort to their families.
