2 De a r Pa r i s h i o n e r s o f St. An t h o n y o f Pa d u a Ch u r c h & Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Revisiting Holy Orders In last week s bulletin, in answer to question 325, the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: The sacrament of Holy Orders is composed of three degrees which are irreplaceable for the organic structure of the Church: the episcopate, the presbyterate and the diaconate. It refers to paragraph 1554 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: The divinely instituted ecclesiastical ministry is exercised in different degrees by those who even from ancient times have been called bishops, priests, and deacons. (LG 28) Catholic doctrine, expressed in the liturgy, the Magisterium, and the constant practice of the Church, recognizes that there are two degrees of ministerial participation in the priesthood of Christ: the episcopacy and the presbyterate. The diaconate is intended to help and serve them. For this reason the term sacerdos [the priest] in current usage denotes bishops and priests but not deacons. Yet Catholic doctrine teaches that the degrees of priestly participation (episcopate and presbyterate) and the degree of service (diaconate) are all three conferred by a sacramental act called ordination, that is, by the sacrament of Holy Orders: Let everyone revere the deacons as Jesus Christ, the bishop as the image of the Father, and the presbyters as the senate of God and the assembly of the apostles. For without them one cannot speak of the Church. (St. Ignatius of Antioch, Ad Trall) Maybe another way to bring all three together is in the image of the church as the bride of Christ. Remember the angel tells St. John in Revelations 21:9, Come hear, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. Using this image from the Book of Revelations, since the early times of the church, Christ is seen as the Groom and the Church is seen as the Bride. In applying to Holy Orders, the priestly and diaconal degrees are seen in this matter: (1) The Bishop is referred to Christ as the Groom to the Church as the Bride. The Bishop s ring indicates his marriage to the Church, the Bride, as Christ is married to the Church. (2) The priest as pastor of a parish is co-worker with the Bishop. The priest is to the parishioners as Christ the head is to the body. The love between Christ and the Church is reflected in the love of the pastor and parishioners. Both (1) and (2) reflects the priestly degrees in Holy Orders. (3) The degree of service that is the diaconate order is reflected in the marriage image of the deacon as the best man to the groom, the priest, and the maid of honor to the bride, the church. This service in love inspires both the groom and the bride to grow in their love for each other. As the restoration of the Order of Deacon in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church coincides with the number of priests in decline, we sometimes experience the deacon taking the place of the priest. So we think the deacon s job is to take the place of the priest. This is not the purpose of the Order of Deacon. The Compendium expresses that the Bishop, Priest, and Deacon are irreplaceable for the organic structure of the Church. That means if we had all the priests we need, we would still have deacons. The three orders should always be present in the life of the church. Activities this week: Faith Formation for Annunciation s 9 th, 10 th and 11 th graders, Monday Thursday. Gospel for the Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time, Cycle C Luke 7:36-8:3 Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. To anoint Jesus in this way was to pamper him with a luxury. More than this external offering, the woman also gave Jesus her tears. She wept for her sins, for the hope of forgiveness, and for the love of Christ. To wipe his feet with her hair was to give the gift of her humility. Jesus used the opportunity to distinguish between those who love much, and those who love little. The self-righteous, like Simon, have little room in their hearts for love of others because they are so full of the love of themselves. They feel they have nothing to repent for. We are called not to compare our sins to others that are worse than ours, but rather to honestly recognize where we have failed. Then, like this woman, we can show great love to Christ by giving him the very best of what we have.
