2 De a r Pa r i s h i o n e r s o f St. An t h o n y o f Pa d u a Ch u r c h & Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, St. Anthony of Padua Parish Lenten Retreat Mission Becoming An Intentional Disciple of Christ March 19-21, 2018 The fishermen left their nets in the boat and went off in the company. Please join Msgr. John Griesbach from St. Anthony Retreat Center in Three Rivers California for a Lenten Retreat Mission from March 19-21, 2018 at 6:00-7:30 p.m. Each evening is designed to help set our hearts ablaze with a personal, powerful, and transformative encounter with Jesus Christ though music, scripture, preaching, prayer and ritual. Become an intentional disciple of Christ! Msgr. Griesbach says: During the Lenten Retreat Mission we will have the opportunity to explore our own personal journey of faith up to the present moment. We will have the chance to meet Christ in a special and privileged way, and to allow Christ to touch our heart in exactly the way we need so we can more freely come on board with him. We will also have the chance to explore the gifts and charisms planted within us at baptism that are waiting to be used for the sake of building up the Body of Christ, and making the Kingdom of God something tangible and real. In the process, we will learn new and powerful ways of praying and reading the Scriptures; we will grow in a deeper and more meaningful understanding of our Catholic Faith; and we will discover how relevant, life-giving and empowering the Good News of the Gospel can be for all of us who live in this post-modern, secular day and age. Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl We ask parishioners of both Annunciation and St. Anthony to place their Rice Bowl donation in the special container near St. Joseph s statue at either church. The pick-up date for the donations is Palm Sunday, March 25, Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl is a good Lenten activity as it combines prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Visit crsricebowl.org for resources. Fr. Brice Higginbotham I encourage parishioners who have Internet service to visit Fr. Brice Higginbotham on YouTube. Fr. Higginbotham is a native of Church Point and is a priest of the Houma-Thibodeaux Diocese. He has a series of great messages on YouTube. WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: After attending our parish retreat and feeling much better and stronger about my faith, I want to make this Lent worthwhile. What can I do to keep the spirit and practice of Lent? Answer: You ve already taken the first step by going on the parish retreat. It is important for us to tune up our faith, taking some time to renew ourselves through prayer, meditation and education. By deepening our knowledge and understanding of faith, we are often better attuned to its richness and meaning for our life. Lent is an intense retreat, a forty-day period of reflection and penance that prepares us to celebrate the passion, death and resurrection of Christ. Our communication with God and our awareness of him is the purpose of prayer. Setting aside extra time each day helps intensify the season. Prayer includes daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, communal penance services and private confession. Making restitution for sin as well as disciplining our hearts and minds to focus on God is the purpose of penance. It helps us restore a sense of balance to our souls, thrown off kilter by sin. Penance includes personal sacrifice, self-denial, fasting, almsgiving and charitable works. Finally, spiritual practices help us sharpen our understanding and insight into the meaning and understanding of our faith. When you take your faith seriously, you do what is necessary to follow Jesus more closely, to integrate your life and your faith more carefully. Gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent, Year B John 2:13-25 We all have things in our lives that don t belong there. Maybe it s the poor way we allow someone to treat us, maybe it s a habitual sin, maybe it s a pattern of thought or attitude that traps us in a cycle of regret, anger, or an inability to forgive. Jesus has bold words for us today: Take these out of here. When we hear the story of the Cleansing of the Temple, it can be easy to look down on the animal - sellers and money - changers. However, they set up shop in the Temple for a very practical purpose. People needed to buy animals to sacrifice, they were going to sacrifice them in the Temple: ergo, quite a convenient, successful marketplace! For many of us, the negative influences in our lives don t come out of nowhere. We might have considered them quite practical and reasonable initially. We wanted to keep the peace, so we allowed someone to talk to us disrespectfully. A person hurt us deeply and we weren t prepared to let go of our resentment right away. Over time, these can fester and corrupt our inner life in a way we didn t expect. The response of Jesus is a strong one. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area. God wants us to be whole, healthy human beings. He knows how destructive it is for our souls to be caught up in sin our own sin and those of others. God s love for us is startlingly fierce. In a few short weeks we will celebrate the culmination of that courageous love as Jesus goes to his death on the cross. In the meantime, Lent is an opportunity for cleansing and renewal. If we ve allowed into our lives things that don t belong, let today be the day we ask Jesus to clear them out. It s not always easy or pretty, but it s necessary for our hearts to function the way they were made. God will turn our tables over if we ask Him to. Questions of the Week First Reading - Exodus 20:1-3, 7-8, We hear today the giving of the Law to Moses at Mount Sinai. The first three Commandments speak to Israel s relationship with God, while the remaining seven focus on the Israelites relationships with each other. How do you interpret this disproportionate focus? Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1: Paul asserts that Christ crucified was a stumbling block and foolishness to many. Why do you think this was the case? Gospel Reading John 2: John concludes his account of the incident in Temple by commenting that Jesus knew human nature well, but did not trust it. What is it about human nature do you think that Jesus found untrustworthy?
