Amen. Please be seated.

The First Lesson Colossians 1:15-28 A Reading from the Book of Colossians Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him-- provided that you continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel. I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but has now been revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God Please stand for the sequence hymn and remain standing until the sermon begins. Sequence Hymn 488 Be thou my vision SLANE

The Holy Gospel Luke 10:38-42 The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. Please be seated for the sermon. Sermon The Rev. Sarah Duggin, Associate Rector Please stand for the Creed. The Nicene Creed BCP P 358 The Prayers of the People Form III BCP P 387 Confession of Sin BCP P 360 Absolution The Peace All stand. The Celebrant says to the people The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

Welcome & Announcements The Offertory Hymn 383 Fairest Lord Jesus ST. ELIZABETH Presentation Hymn Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. OLD HUNDREDTH THE HOLY COMMUNION Eucharistic Prayer Enriching our Worship 1 The people remain standing. Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing:

Sanctus LAND OF REST The people may stand or kneel as the celebrant continues. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. And now, as our savior Jesus Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: The Lord s Prayer BCP P 364 People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those, who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The Administration of Communion All those who seek a closer relationship with God in Christ are welcome to receive communion at St. John s. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please cross your arms over your chest as you reach the communion minister.

Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant: Let us pray. Celebrant and People Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing Recessional Hymn 609 Where cross the crowded ways of life GARDINER The Dismissal Celebrant: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 8 Instructed Eucharist Annotations When I was a little girl, my family did not go to church - pretty much EVER, unless my grandmother was in town. But I LOVED to go to church with my friends, all of whom were Roman Catholic. I loved the candles, the praying, the singing everything, except that I had to sit in the back when everyone else went up for Holy Communion. I was very clearly a stranger there, and I didn t understand ANY of it, but it spoke to me of something deep, and ancient, and mysterious and holy. And even many years later after I started going to church on my own, I still didn t understand any of it, but I belonged, and I was welcome, and the service was still mysterious and holy. It wasn t until I was in seminary that I began to understand what was going on, and why it felt so ancient and mysterious, but also strangely familiar. When we did this last summer (thanks to Cara Rockhill, who did most of the work for this!), so many of you came up to us and thanked us for helping you to see what had been here all along. My hope is that learning more about why we do what we do will help you find its deeper meaning for you without taking away any of its beauty, mystery, and holiness! I hope you enjoy it! Gini FAQ s when people first walk into an Episcopal Church: What are the parts of the church? You re sitting in the Nave, which is the name for the central part of the church were all the pews are. You walked in (probably) through the Narthex, the area between the doors and the pews. The Chancel is the area up front, up the little set of stairs, where the service participants sit and do things. The Pulpit is where the preacher works his/her magic, and the Lectern is where we do the readings other than the Gospel. (We read the Gospel from the midst of the people.) The last part is the Altar, which is usually all the way up at the very front, but in the summer (and at the 9 o clock service) we move the Altar into the chancel. What are the books in the pew (aka, the benches you re sitting on), and why isn t one of them a Bible? There should be two books in front of you. The red one is the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), which is a central book in the Episcopal tradition (and Anglican tradition as a whole). The blue book is the Hymnal. It contains the music for our services. The page numbers are also the Hymn numbers. The Episcopal Church has several approved Hymnals. This one (the 1982 Hymnal) is the one we use most often, but we also use selections from Life Every Voice and Sing (or LEVAS), which includes many traditional spirituals. Many people ask why we don t have Bibles in the pews. Good question. The bulletin includes the sections of Scripture that we read in the service, so people don t have to turn to those sections in their Bibles (a fairly recent historic development). But also, it s just not part of our tradition, though you will hear sentences from Scripture all throughout the service! Should I be praying right now? I m not sure what to do until the service starts. Church is a time to be in community with others, but as a general rule, if the Prelude is being played, you should find a seat and prepare yourself quietly for the service. You can pray, reflect back on the blessings and challenges of your week, close your eyes and listen to the music, or even read the Psalms (which start on page 585 of the BCP). Our world offers us very few opportunities for silence; this can be one of those sacred moments for you.

Who are the people up front? This varies a bit from week to week. Most weeks (but not this week), John Wise, our verger, is with us, wearing his black and gray vestments. (A verger is the person charged with the order and upkeep of the service. They began carrying a stick called a verge - in the Middle Ages to move animals out of the way!) The person carrying the cross in is the crucifer. The Gospel bearer carries the Gospel book, the large red book which contains all of the weekly readings from the Gospel. Chalicists are the people who help with Communion by serving the wine. Tim (who is not here today) is our seminarian, which means he is at St. John s as part of his training to be a priest. He is also serving as our Deacon, who is an ordained person whose ministry in church is to proclaim the Gospel, and assist the priests. Tim will be ordained as a priest in June. Our Priests are Gini Gerbasi, the Rector, (the head Priest of the parish) and Sarah Duggin, the Associate Rector. Why are they wearing white robes? To symbolize purity. Really. And it s also the tradition of the Episcopal (as well as the Roman Catholic) Church. The robes are called albs, and the rope tied around our waists is called a cincture, (the church is known for having fancy words for simple things) is to show that we are unarmed. Why do some of the people up there wear colorful scarves over their robes? Those are called stoles, and they are the primary tangible symbol of ordination. The color of the stoles will vary according to the season (the Liturgical Season in church talk) or the occasion. We use white for weddings, baptisms, and funerals. This season is ordinary time, or the season after Pentecost, and the color is green. A deacon wears his/her stole like a (Miss America) sash, and priests wear them around their neck like a scarf. Notes about the service: Prelude This is music to help us prepare ourselves to experience the mysterious and holy. Processional Hymn #401 - This is found in the blue book. We stand because we are joyfully celebrating, and showing respect. Opening Acclamation and Collect for Purity Our opening prayer helps us open our hearts to God. Here at St. John s, we say the Collect (pronounced call-lect) for Purity together, while standing (except in Lent, when we kneel to show we are penitent). Gloria in excelsis Hymn S #278 The S hymns are located in the front part of the hymnal. The S means it s a service hymn (in this case of praise), or the music that is essential to the liturgy (which translates as the work of the people ). There is an assumption in the Bible that you will make a Joyful noise to and for God, and Gloria is a classic. By singing this hymn we are opening our worship with a song of praise! So belt it out! Collect of the day fun fact, this prayer is called a Collect because in the 6 th century a practice began of collecting the prayers, and making them into one consolidated prayer. The Lessons the lessons, or readings, are set in a 3-year cycle by the common lectionary. We re in year C now. The readings are designed so that if you come every Sunday for 3 years, you ll hear readings that cover all of the Bible. Each Sunday the lectionary offers readings from the Old Testament, the Psalms (which are found in the Old Testament), and the Epistles (or letters) and Gospels (or Good News ) of the

New Testament. There are 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), each one a little different. Today, the lectionary sets that we are reading from the Gospel of Luke. Sermon or homily, is a tradition that goes back many thousands of years, to our Jewish ancestors. The preacher stands before the congregation and reflects on the readings in light of their lives. Nicene Creed The Nicene Creed is a product of conflict in the church in the 4 th and 5 th Centuries. We could write volumes on the Creed, but the gist of it is that the Nicene Creed is a summary statement of the belief system of the Church. There are a lot of parts of the Nicene Creed, and not everyone believes all of parts all of the time. Our Clergy would be happy to discuss any parts of the Creed with you, if you d like. Prayers of the People Form 3 this week we are using form 3 because it s a bit shorter and we don t want to keep you here all day! The prayers of the people are traditionally done by a Deacon or lay member of the parish (we call that person the Intercessor), because we are bringing the prayers of the world into the church. There are 6 parts of the prayers of the people that are set by the BCP (and found on page 383), but beyond those 6 things, the prayers can vary greatly. Confession and Absolution Just to mix it up a bit, some days you can say the Confession as if you are speaking only for yourself, personally. Other days, you can say the Confession as if you are speaking for all of humanity. It makes the whole thing more meaningful to switch it up a bit. And it ends with forgiveness! The ability to move forward in our relationship with God. The Peace We greet one another with words, or symbols of peace! What a beautiful thing to be able to do and share with one another. Offertory Hymn #383 We typically think of this time as when the church plays music while they pass the plate, asking for your money. Certainly this is when we pass the collection plate. But this is also the time for you to offer your whole self to the Lord (your prayers, fears, joys, sorrows, and thanksgivings), not just your money. This is the part of the service where you make the offerings and sacrifices to God that God then receives and blesses (celebrated in the Presentation Hymn). Presentation Hymn Cara spilled the beans on this last summer: we use this is just to cover up the period of time when the ushers bring the collection up front. But it s also a theologically profound time, when God is accepting the sacrifices we ve just made. THE HOLY COMMUNION Here is where the service shifts from the Service of the Word (the prayers, readings, sermon, etc.) to the Service of Table, or Holy Communion. One thing you may notice is the priests (and others up at the altar, or altar party) bowing and crossing themselves, or moving their hands over the bread and wine. If you follow along in the BCP, you can read the required movements (called rubrics) but much of what we do up there is at the discretion of the priest preforming the Eucharist! However, if you ve ever wondered if you should be bowing, standing, or kneeling, here s a quick guide: standing is for joy; bowing is reverence; kneeling is for penitence.

Eucharistic Prayer, Enriching Our Worship, Prayer 1 There are several versions in the BCP, and several additional authorized versions you can find in Enriching Our Worship. All of them follow a similar pattern of recalling the salvation story, beginning with the Old Testament, and ending the Last Supper. Sanctus Sanctus translated from Latin means Ghost. The song itself is a way of uniting the Old Testament (where it is found in Isaiah 6:3) and the new. Tradition tells us that this hymn of praise is a way for us to sing with the angles and saints who have come before us. Mystery of Faith Although it s not like there s only 1 mystery of faith, this statement does summarize the mystery of the pattern of life, death, and resurrection that we see in the life of Christ and in the world. Lord s Prayer Fun fact! The Lord s Prayer comes from Matthew 6:9-13. Administration of Communion Everyone is welcome at the Lord s Table, even if you ve never been! We use flour-based wafers for bread and Port wine (it doesn t stain the linens!). Take the bread in your hands, and then either eat it and sip the wine, or dip it in the wine (called intinction). You can also skip the wine if you d like. After you ve been given the bread and/or wine, Amen, thank you, or a head nod are all appropriate things to do or say. Post-Communion Prayer and Dismissal These two work together to remind us to go back into the world in peace to serve God. This is a scary and difficult thing to do, so we pray for strength and courage! Postlude The Postlude is a musical invitation to go out into the world in joy and peace! Thank you for being here today!
