St Paul s Church, Knightsbridge The Diocese of London The Solemn Eucharist and Sacrament of Baptism The Twentieth Sunday after Trinity 21st October 2012 at 11 a.m.

Welcome to St Paul s Knightsbridge, part of the Diocese of London and a church of the worldwide Anglican Communion. If you are visiting us from another church, please make yourself known to the sidesmen or to one of the clergy after the service. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to share with us in this Eucharist and those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament are invited to approach the altar at the time of Communion, to receive a blessing. There is a loop system in the lower parts of the church for the benefit of the hearingimpaired. Hearing aid users should switch their devices to T. During the service a collection will be taken for the work of the church in this parish, throughout the Diocese of London and further afield. Please use the special envelopes at the end of each pew to maximise your giving through the Giftaid scheme. Members of the congregation are asked to ensure that mobile phones are switched off (or to silent) and are reminded that the taking of photographs or the making of audio or video recordings during services is prohibited. 3 Order of Service The Introductory Rite At 11 a.m. a bell is rung. The Servers and Sacred Ministers enter and process to cense the High Altar before returning to the platform. All stand to sing: ENTRANCE HYMN Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love. To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish, like leaves on the tree, then wither and perish; but nought changeth thee. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. Words: Walter Chalmers Smith ( ) Music: St. Denio (Welsh, 1839) 3

THE GREETING When all are in their places the Celebrant says: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and with thy spirit. THE PRAYER OF PREPARATION Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ, our Lord. Amen. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens, Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus altissimus, Jesu Christe cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly king, God, the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten son, Jesus Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art the most high, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Music: Missa O Magnum Mysterium - Tomás Luis de Victoria ( ) 4

All stand when the sacred ministers stand. THE COLLECT The Celebrant introduces a period of silence: Let us pray. O God, giver of life, whose Holy Spirit welleth up within thy Church: fill us with the gifts of that same Spirit to live the gospel of Christ, and make us ready to do thy will, that we may share with all thy whole creation the joys of eternal life; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. All sit. The Liturgy of the Word THE FIRST READING Isaiah 53: 4-end A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, 5

so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. At the end: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. All stand. 6

THE GRADUAL HYMN In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o'er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. When the woes of life o'ertake me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake me: lo, it glows with peace and joy. When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, from the cross the radiance streaming adds new luster to the day. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide. In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o'er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime. Words: John Bowring ( ) Music: Wychbold, Walter Whinfield ( ) All remain standing. The Cantor sings: THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 7

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. All turn to face the Deacon. The Deacon says: The Lord be with you and with thy spirit. THE GOSPEL READING Mark Hear the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. THE SERMON Fr Alan Gyle Vicar Silence is kept. 8

THE LITURGY OF BAPTISM THE PRESENTATION OF THE CANDIDATE Patrick, son of Johanna and Thomas Baring, is presented to the congregation. The Celebrant addresses the whole congregation, saying: Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome this child and uphold him in his new life in Christ? With the help of God, we will. The Celebrant then says to the parents and godparents: Parents and godparents, the Church receives this child with joy. Today we are trusting God for his growth in faith. Will you pray for him, draw him by your example into the community of faith and walk with him in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism this child begins his journey in faith. You speak for him today. Will you care for him, and help him to take his place within the life and worship of Christ s Church? With the help of God, we will. THE DECISION To the parents and the godparents, the Celebrant says: Those who bring children to be baptized must affirm their allegiance to Christ and their rejection of all that is evil. It is your duty to bring up this child to fight against evil and to follow Christ. Therefore I ask these questions: Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins. Do you renounce evil? I renounce evil. 9

THE SIGNING WITH THE CROSS Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen. The Servers and Sacred Ministers, parents and godparents move to the font. THE PRAYER OVER THE WATER The Celebrant stands before the water of baptism and says: Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. We thank thee, almighty God, for the gift of water to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water thou didst lead the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land. In water thy Son, Jesus, received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us from the death of sin to newness of life. We thank thee, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, in joyful obedience to thy Son, we baptize into his fellowship this child who is brought to him in faith. Now sanctify this water that, by the power of thy Holy Spirit, he may be cleansed from sin and born again. Renewed in thy image, may he walk by the light of faith and continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom with thee and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 10

THE PROFESSION OF FAITH The Celebrant addresses the congregation, saying: Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together with this child the Faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our nature, died for us and rose again? I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in him. This is the Faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. THE BAPTISM The Celebrant baptizes the child, saying: PATRICK WINDHAM, I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE ANOINTING WITH CHRISM The Celebrant anoints the child with the oil of Chrism, saying: May God, who has received thee by baptism into his Church, pour upon thee the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ s pilgrim people thou mayest daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. Amen. 11

THE GIVING OF A LIGHTED CANDLE Receive this light. This is to show that you have passed from darkness to light. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. The Servers and Sacred Ministers return to the platform. The congregation is blessed with the Baptismal water. The parents and godparents, with Patrick, return to their places. THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ, let us pray to the Father. All kneel. Either of the following responses may be used: Lord in thy mercy or Lord, hear us hear our prayer Lord, graciously hear us. For the departed, these words may be used: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord and let light perpetual shine upon them. May they rest in peace and rise in glory. At the end, a brief period of silence is kept for personal prayer. All say: Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. All sit. THE NOTICES THE PEACE All stand. The Celebrant says: We are the body of Christ. In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. Let us then pursue all that makes for peace and builds up our common life. The peace of the Lord be always with you and with thy spirit. The Deacon says: Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All exchange a sign of peace with those standing close by. 12

THE OFFERTORY The gifts of the people are carried to the altar and presented. The Liturgy of the Sacrament A collection is taken to support our work, ministry and charitable giving. Please use the Gift Aid envelopes provided, remembering to fill in all the details. THE COLLECTION HYMN Now is eternal life, If risen with Christ we stand, In him to life reborn, And holden in his hand; No more we fear death s ancient dread, In Christ arisen from the dead. For God, the living God, Stooped down to man s estate; By death destroying death, Christ opened wide life s gate. He lives, who died; he reigns on high; Who lives in him shall never die. Unfathomed love divine, Reign thou within my heart; From thee nor depth nor height, Nor life nor death can part; My life is hid in God with thee, Now and through all eternity. Words: G.W. Briggs ( ) Music: Christchurch, Charles Steggall ( ) All sit. The choir sings: THE OFFERTORY ANTHEM Jauchzet dem Herrn Heinrich Schütz ( ) 13

Amen. O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Words : Psalm 100 with doxology When the Thurifer approaches, all stand to be censed. After being censed, all remain standing for the Eucharistic Prayer. 14

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Celebrant sings: All respond: It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, thine only Son, our Lord. For he is thy living Word; through him thou hast created all things from the beginning, and fashioned us in thine own image. Through him thou didst redeem us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born of a woman, to die upon the cross, and to rise again for us. Through him thou hast made us a people for thine own possession, exalting him to thy right hand on high, and sending forth through him thy holy and life-giving Spirit. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee and saying: The choir sings: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth, Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua, Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Music: Missa O Magnum Mysterium - Tomás Luis de Victoria ( ) 15

The prayer continues: Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of thy Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to thee, he gave it to them, saying: Drink ye all of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of his kingdom and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of thy divine majesty, renew us by thy Holy Spirit, inspire us with thy love, and unite us in the body of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father almighty, world without end. Amen. 16

THE LORD S PRAYER All kneel. The Celebrant sings: Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us. All sing: THE FRACTION The Celebrant breaks the consecrated bread, saying: We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. THE GIVING OF HOLY COMMUNION By way of invitation to receive the Sacrament the Celebrant says: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed. The Sacred Ministers and Servers receive Holy Communion, followed by the people, beginning with those seated at the front of the Nave. All who normally do so in their own Church are invited to receive the Sacrament. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion are invited to approach the altar to receive a blessing, carrying this booklet in their hands as an indication to the Priest. 17

PRAYERS AFTER COMMUNION The Celebrant introduces a period of silent prayer. Let us pray. All kneel. God our Father, whose Son, the light unfailing, hath come from heaven that he may deliver the world from the darkness of ignorance: may the eyes of our understanding be opened through these holy mysteries that we, knowing the way of life, may walk in it without stumbling; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son, Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. THE CONCLUDING HYMN Stand up, stand up, for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss: from victory unto victory his army shall he lead, till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up, for Jesus; the trumpet call obey; forth to the mighty conflict in this his glorious day: ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes; let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose. 19

Stand up, stand up, for Jesus; stand in his strength alone; the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own: put on the Gospel armour, and watching unto prayer, when duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up, for Jesus; the strife will not be long: this day, the noise of battle; the next, the victor's song. 22 NOTES ON THE READINGS Isaiah 53: 4-end This selection from the 4th Servant Poem in Second Isaiah matches nicely the gospel from Mark 10:35-45, which says that whoever wishes to be great must be a servant. In its original context, the servant poem was meant to spell out the vocation of Israel as servant. Despite its suffering, it trusted God and would be ultimately vindicated. Many scholars believe that the prophet's own life illustrated this vocation as servant. The nations of the world are the "we" in this passage. The servant's/israel's suffering was on their behalf. Though they considered Israel as chastised by God, they recognized the substitutionary role that Israel has played. In vv. 4-6 the nations confess their own guilt. The servant himself is steadfast in faith. Though oppressed and afflicted, he never complained. Unjustly punished, the servant experiences an apparently dishonorable death. His grave was with the wicked though he had done no violence. Beginning with v. 10, the poem talks about the servant's final vindication: he will see future generations, he shall see light. By his faithful, unjust suffering, he makes many righteous.the "I" in v. 12 is God. The servant experienced a cruel death, but in his suffering he bore the sins of others and prayed for his persecutors. The vindication of the servant will be glorious. God promises to the servant a great reward. Early Christians saw in the career of the servant a picture that made sense and gave meaning to the crucifixion of Jesus. They saw Jesus as THE servant, whose suffering, death, and resurrection makes it possible for us, like ancient Israel, to be God's servants in the world. Mark 10:35-45 Earlier (in 9:33-34) the disciples have argued about which of them is the greatest. Now two members of the inner circle ask a favour of Jesus: they seek positions of special dignity at the messianic banquet in heaven at the end of time (v. 37). Jesus answers: you do not know the implications of what you ask. In the Old Testament, one s cup (v. 38) is one s lot assigned by God, be it blessing or condemnation. Here, Jesus is speaking of his suffering and death. To be baptised with Jesus baptism is to share fully in God s ways. James and John confidently answer yes (v. 39) and accept all the consequences. Only the Father knows whom he has called to special places in the kingdom. Jesus tells all the disciples: pagan authority depends on power and force (v. 42) but for disciples, it is different (v. 43): to be great now and in the kingdom ( become, v. 43 and be, v. 44) one must serve others; to be first, one must serve even more humbly, as a slave. Jesus, the Son of Man (v. 45), in his voluntary abasement, is the example: he gave even his life for the freedom of others, gaining their release from punishment and death for their sins. 22

NOTES ON THE MUSIC Missa O Magnum Mysterium Tomás Luis de Victoria ( ) Spain s most renowned composer of the 16th Century, Victoria is sometimes known as the Spanish Palestrina. He was an accomplished organist and singer, as well as composer, and held a number of chapel master positions before being appointed Maestro di Capella at the Basilica St. Apollinare, Italy, in In the preceding year, he became an ordained Priest. It was during this time in Italy that it is thought that Victoria studied with Palestrina. Many church representatives would ask Victoria for his opinion on appointments to cathedral positions because of his reputation and knowledge. He is the most significant Spanish composer of the Counter-Reformation (also known as the Catholic Revival) and is one of the best-regarded composers of sacred music in the late- Renaissance era. Victoria s music reflected his complex character expressing religion and Spanish mysticism through melodic motifs and joyful inventions. He was a master at crossing over and dividing choirs with multiple parts. Victoria based his Missa O Magnum Mysterium, published in 1592, on a Christmas motet that he had composed in The motet s character is quite extensive and reflects on the Incarnation at Christmas, but for the mass Victoria adopts a generally more energetic and celebratory spirit. In the Gloria and the Sanctus, Victoria swings into triple-time reflecting on his multiple, unpredictable personality. The Sanctus holds a motif of a falling 5 th, which is a significant feature throughout the movement, and the bass voice drops out completely for the Beneditus. Many people hear in his music a direct emotional appeal and a spiritual intensity which contrasts the more rhythmically and harmonically docile music of Palestrina. Jauchzet dem Herrn Heinrich Schütz ( ) Heinrich Schütz was a German organist and composer, and is generally viewed as the most significant German composer before J.S. Bach. He is also considered to be one of the most important composers of the seventeenth century, along with Monteverdi. After being a choir boy he went on to study law, in Germany, before going to Venice in to study music. Schütz s compositions show similarities to Monteverdi s, as well as other Italian composers. He was of great importance in bringing Italian ideas to Germany, and had such a large influence on German composers to follow most notably J.S. Bach and Brahms both who are known to have studied Schütz s work. He was one of the last composers to write in a modal style, and his harmonies in music were often a result from contrapuntal alignment, rather than from any planned, vertical, harmonic structure. A lot of Schütz s music has been lost over the years but Jauchzet dem Herrn, with the text taken from Psalm 100, survived and is a work that shows effectively his musical style and character. His music includes a great deal of imitation, but unpredictably such as successive voices not entering after the same amount of beats, or at expected intervals. The English translation O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, Jauchzet dem Herrn was 23

written for double choir, and the antiphonal exchange between the choirs as well as the changing time signatures means that it appears to be jovially disjointed. There is not a moment where both choirs are singing completely in line with each other, not even at the end for the Amen. O Jesu Christ, mein Lebens licht Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most influential composers in our musical history. His vast numbers of choral, keyboard and orchestral works have been performed widely, and are often the focus of study for composition and counterpoint. It is well known that Bach walked over 200 miles to hear Dieterich Buxtehude play the organ a man who greatly inspired Bach. Bach was a highly religious man and, in his own words, apparently said The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. Bach s O Jesu Christ, mein Lebens licht is a motet from a Cantata, and was performed at the grave-side ceremony for Count Frederich von Flemming in Originally scored for litui (a type of curved war-trumpet), cornet and trombones, it was meant for outdoor performances, but a few years later Bach re-scored it to include strings, oboe, bassoon and organ. In the opening bars, Bach uses an ornamented motif which is derived from the slow, step-wise fluctuation of the Chorale tune (heard when the voices enter in long notes from the soprano). This then extends into six-part counterpoint. The opening passage returns unchanged after the last line of the choral. The unusual original instrumentation and the solemn narrative of the choir produces a deep gravity, yet an honest simplicity, fitting the formality for which it was intended. Paean Kenneth Leighton ( ) Kenneth Leighton was an English composer and pianist writing Anglican Church music, concertos, chamber music, symphonies and an opera. His works were highly influenced by English composers such as Vaughan Williams, Britten and Walton, as well as being exposed to Schoenberg, Webern and Berg from his studies in Italy in His single most widely-known piece is his setting of the Coventry Carol, which he composed as a student at Queen s College, Oxford, in In addition to contributing greatly to the choral repertoire, he also wrote a significant number of organ works. Paean, meaning a song or lyric poem expressing triumph and thanksgiving, is a piece in which many familiar Leighton traits are used: from the striding, ambiguous rhythms to the variety of articulation. Compared to Leighton s later works which go beyond the influence of the English composers mentioned above, Paean always maintains the importance of melody at the forefront. 24

THE CHOIR OF ST PAUL S KNIGHTSBRIDGE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Stephen Farr ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF MUSIC Christian Wilson ORGAN SCHOLAR Georgina Sherriff The Music & Musicians of St Paul s Knightsbridge St Paul s Knightsbridge maintains a regular professional choir of eight and the services of both a Director (Stephen Farr) and Assistant Director of Music (Christian Wilson). The organ is by Henry Willis & Sons and dates from The musical repertoire, Sunday by Sunday, is diverse and often boldly ambitious: at the Solemn Mass at 11 am there is always a choral mass setting and two seasonal anthems, one at the Offertory and the other during Communion.
