(Psalm 95:6) March 1 st is Ash Wednesday, which traditionally marks the beginning of a 40-day period of prayer and spiritual re-focusing called Lent to assist us in preparing to celebrate Easter. There is no biblical obligation to observe Lent; in fact, historically the Presbyterian church has avoided the practice due to the absence of any Scripture-based commandment to do so. You could make a good case that each week ought to be a period of prayer and spiritual re-focusing as we prepare for Sunday worship, which is a weekly celebration of Christ s resurrection on Easter morning. That being said, we need to recognize our tendency to allow our Sunday worship to become routine, without much preparation on our part. We forget how good the Good News of Jesus Christ really is, and often attend church wondering more what s in it for us rather than seeking to offer ourselves in joyful gratitude to the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20) So let this Lenten season be a time of recharging our faith. Consider the sobering truth that apart from the grace of God in Christ, you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked living in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature, children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. (Ephesians 2:1-3) The gospel is not mainly about becoming better human beings (although that s a true sign of its power); rather, it is about bringing the dead to life, real life, abundant life, eternal life. That s why it s called Good News and not good advice, because it announces that by grace you have been saved by faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Eph.2:8-9) Use this time to be renewed as you reflect deeply on God s love for you, and then be a channel of that love to those God has placed around you. After experimenting at Cracker Barrel, we are moving the gathering back to the church, which should be easier to access. You can bring your own breakfast, or Rev. Ed will be glad to swing by the Chick-fil-A and pick up a chicken biscuit for you (with advance notice and sufficient funds ) We are continuing our study in the life of King David, so read 1 Samuel 16:1-13 in preparation.
