(Gospel) - - Nicolas Poussin, Institution of the Eucharist, 1640 detail Parish Mission Statement We are a Eucharist-centered community, inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, nourished and strengthened by the sacramental life of the Church, who welcomes, accepts and celebrates our unity, as persons created in the image and likeness of God.

2 Dear Friends in Christ, June 3, 2018 Congratulations to all of our eight grade graduates! We ask God s blessings upon you as you move on to high school. While we miss seeing you throughout the week, please know that St. Mary s is always your home, even if you belong to a different parish. Many of us are unfamiliar with the Corpus Christi procession, so these reflections of Cardinal Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus, might prove helpful to us. They are taken from the book Feast of Faith: What does Corpus Christi mean to me? Well, first of all it brings back memories of special feast days when we took quite literally what Thomas Aquinas put so well in one of his Corpus Christi hymns: Quantum potes tantum aude - dare to do as much as you can, giving him due praise.... In fact these words also recall something Justin Martyr said as early as the second century. In his description of the Christian liturgy he writes that the one who presides at the eucharistic celebration, i.e., the priest, is to offer up prayers and thanksgivings "as much as he is able". This is what the entire community feels called to do at Corpus Christi: dare to do what you can. I can still smell those carpets of flowers and the freshness of the birch trees; I can see all the houses decorated, the banners, the singing: I can still hear the village band, which indeed sometimes dared more, on this occasion, than it was able! I remember the joie de vivre of the local lads, firing their gun salutes - which was their way of welcoming Christ as a head of state, as the Head of State, the Lord of the world, present on their streets and in their village. On this day people celebrated the perpetual presence of Christ as if it were a state visit in which not even the smallest village was neglected. * * * How then are we to understand the Corpus Christi procession?... There is a general human factor which has caused processions to arise in all religious circles. Our relationship to God needs not only the inward aspect; it also needs to be expressed. And as well as speech, singing and silence, standing, sitting and kneeling, expression also calls for this celebratory walking along together in the community of the faithful, together with the God in whom we believe.... So the Liturgy opens out into everyday life, into our earthly cares; it goes beyond the church precincts because it actually embraces heaven and earth, present and future. How we need this sign! Liturgy is not the private hobby of a particular group; it is about the bond which holds heaven and earth together, it is about the human race and the entire created world. In the Corpus Christi procession, faiths link with the earth, with the whole of reality, is presented "in bodily form", by the act of walking, of treading the ground, our ground... Also, it may interest you to know that a plenary indulgence may be obtained by participating in a Eucharistic procession. An indulgence, a gift of the mercy of God through the Church, remits before God the temporal punishment due to sin that is, the purgation of our sins after death whose guilt has already been forgiven with the Sacrament of Penance. To obtain a plenary indulgence it is necessary to perform the particular work in this case participation in the procession as well as participate in sacramental confession, the reception of Holy Communion and prayer for the intentions of our Holy Father and detachment form even venial sin. If all these conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence is partial. An indulgence can be obtained for the person himself or herself or may be applied to the beloved dead. May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you, Father Cibelli

Washington St, Suite 100, just 3 doors from St. Mary Church, and there's a serious need for adults and children to be there praying for a change of mind of those entering. There's an opportunity for sidewalk counseling if you're comfortable doing that, but first, prayer at the site is very powerful. Volunteers are needed 2 days each week: every Thursday from 9 to 11 AM; every other Tuesday and every other Saturday from 9 to 11 AM. Open Tuesday, June 5 and June 19; Thursday, June 7, 14, 21; Saturday, June 16 and June 30. We also need another "shift" to stay until the women come out after the abortion so we can provide some help. Please Janet Neel dneel@myactv.net if you can help.

4 Father, Why do we process with the Eucharist on Corpus Christi? The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, i.e. Corpus Chirsti was instituted by Pope Urban IV in 1264 to celebrate the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In modern times, we have lost our sense of awe and wonder. We have lost our need to use God as an explanation for the mysteries of life. Yet, if we accept the fact that the all-powerful God became a weak man so that He could show us how much He loves us; if we accept the fact that God loves each one of us individually; then we must also accept the fact that God wants to unite himself to us in His Body and Blood Soul and Divinity in the Holy Eucharist. Cardinal Basil Hume in his book, The Mystery of the Incarnation, wrote that we need to recapture our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and We will not do it by making it consciously cheerful, or by eccentric celebrations. We will do it by going deeper into its meaning. That is the secret. Pope John Paul II wrote a wonderful encyclical on the Eucharist entitled, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, in which he desired to rekindle this Eucharistic amazement. One way that we can proclaim this mystery to the world is through our annual Corpus Christi procession. When you have Good News, you want to share it with people. Hey, I got a new job! I just got engaged to the most wonderful person! Well, in the Catholic Church, our spouse, Jesus Christ comes to us, His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Most Blessed Sacrament and we want to tell the world how great our God is; and if not the world, then at least, downtown Hagerstown. 6 2018 U.S. Congress District 6 Every election year, the Maryland Catholic Conference surveys the state s candidates for U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives about their positions regarding issues of interest to Catholics. The responses of the Democratic and Republican primary candidates are below. The candidates were asked to either Agree or Disagree with a list of issue statements (see reverse side). A blank response to a statement means the candidate did not choose a position on that issue. Find your legislative district and view responses from all of Maryland s candidates: Candidates were given the opportunity to provide a brief statement at the end of the survey on why Maryland Catholics should vote for them. 7 Candidate Survey STATEMENTS The Maryland Catholic Conference does not endorse or oppose any candidate, under any circumstance, and no inference of endorsement or opposition should be concluded as a result of the information provided here. 1. EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS. Congress should enact legislation that supports the ability of lowincome families to choose the education best suited to their children s needs, such as tax credits for business donations to organizations that provide scholarships for K-12 students to attend nonpublic schools. 2. POVERTY. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and other similar initiatives provide funding for millions of poor Americans who cannot afford to adequately feed themselves or their families. Congress should oppose attempts to reduce funding for these initiatives as a means of trimming budget deficits. 3. HEALTHCARE. Congress should reject structural changes to Medicaid, such as a per-capita cap or other provisions, which would leave millions of people that rely on Medicaid, including many children, at risk of losing access to health care. Any modification to the Medicaid system as part of health care reform should prioritize improvement and affordable access to quality care over cost savings. 4. CONSCIENCE PROTECTIONS. Congress should pass legislation, such as the Conscience Protection Act, to strengthen the enforcement of existing conscience protection laws by establishing a private right of action allowing providers who are discriminated against because of their refusal to perform, refer for or pay for abortions to defend their rights in court. 5. IMMIGRATION. Congress should pass comprehensive, bipartisan immigration reform providing a path to citizenship for undocumented persons in the U.S., while preserving family unity and restoring due process protections to enforcement policies.
