2 A Report on the Status of our Sunday School Wing This month I'm devoting this space to sharing information on the status of our Sunday School wing which was severely damaged on Sunday, February 24, 2019 when the roof collapsed over the east end of the building where our newly created chapel area was located. Most of this information comes from regular reports that our congregational president, Eric Rogness, has been sharing with us on Sunday mornings before worship gets underway. On Sunday, the 24 th, an observant neighbor one block to the north of the church looked out his window at about 8 and noticed that the church roof over the northeast end of the building seemed to be jutting up and out at strange angles and that the tree next to the building appeared to have been decorated with hunks of yellow insulation. The police were called, followed by our fire department, followed by a call to me at the parsonage with the question, Could there have been anyone in the building? Having been at the church earlier that Sunday morning to assess the amount of snow received the night before, noticing that the fellow who plows our parking lot had been unable to even get to the church, and considering how difficult it was for me to travel just a dozen blocks in a four wheel drive truck the decision was made to cancel worship and all activities. So the answer to the question regarding possible occupants of the building was, There shouldn't be. But, I can't say for sure. Thanks be to God for courageous and devoted men and women who serve our community by responding to our needs, sometimes putting their own lives at risk in order to be able to say, for sure, that there was no one in the building when part of the roof came down. The fact that no one was injured, either in the collapse, the removing of snow from the rest of the church roof, or in the demolition and cleanup that has taken place since is the single most important thing that I can tell you about this incident. The rest of what I can share with you needs to be prefaced by following: our church has adequate coverage that will provide for immediate needs to prevent any further damage as well as the rebuilding of the affected areas of our Sunday School wing. We have been in conversation with our insurance company, Church Mutual, and they have provided the services of an adjustor to consider the financial scope of the damages which are preliminarily estimated to be in the $200,000 to $250,000 range. We have also utilized the services of an appointed structural engineering firm in order to ascertain the condition of the entire building. Our insurance coverage has also provided the means to bring in a portable heating system to ensure that pipes in the part of the building that has been cut off from the main heating system do not freeze and cause even more damage. Church Mutual has also instructed us to employ the services of a local contractor to demolish and remove parts of the building that were at risk of collapsing. The contractor also did their best to weather proof the exposed parts of the building to prevent further water damage from rain and melting snow and ice. With regards to what comes next...we await the final report from the structural engineering firm which will indicate if any other areas of the building show any fatigue or damage. Once we have that report we will be able to continue our conversation with our insurance company about the design and rebuilding of that part of our church campus. As the necessary steps continue to move us forward, I know that Eric and I will strive to keep the property committee, church council, and congregation informed and involved in the decision making process. As information becomes available to us, we intend to make it available to you. If, at any time in the process, you have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call Eric or myself. We have been blessed in so very many ways since this unfortunate thing has happened. We have received numerous financial gifts of support from members, non members, and a neighboring church group. We have been blessed with patient and flexible Sunday School teachers who find themselves conducting classes in unexpected places around the church. We have been blessed through the efforts of many, many volunteers who provided labor, food, words of encouragement, and a strong sense of community. God has certainly provided for His people here in this place in our time of need. Please keep the concerns of our church in your prayers as we continue to make our way through the process of putting our church back together. We are one in Christ. We are at our best when we serve in his holy name. 2

6 Spring is in the air! I see it on the calendar, am teased by the seed catalogs and hopefully by the time you read this the snow will have melted enough for the crocus to peek through with their cheery welcome. God's love is evident in nature and the changing seasons. "Let us Rejoice and Be Glad This is perhaps an early reminder, invitation to our Spring Salad Luncheon on May 1st, May Day! Since you may or may not receive the Parish Visitor before May 1 we want you to be sure to mark your calendars. As a child, May Day meant making a basket, filling it with flowers, hanging it on someone s door, ringing the bell and running!! As a gesture of love we will have some small May baskets ready for you to take and leave with a shut-in or friend who is not able to attend the salad luncheon. No, you don t have to run and hide, instead, stay and visit! Remember that our Salad Luncheon is pot luck with dessert provided and serving will begin at 12 noon. Mary Segerstrom will entertain us with a delightful humorous program! And in closing, from a book of Heart Warmers: "O Father, let me not turn my back on those who stand in need. Help me to remember the hungry today with food and not just prayers, Amen."
