Deacon John Vallely Third Sunday of Easter ~ April 30, 2017 Were you aware that the Responsorial Psalm is a vital part of the Liturgy of the Word? It s probably true that we don t pay nearly enough attention to the Responsorial Psalm. Many of us tend to think of it as just another hymn that is led by the cantor or the choir and in which we are invited to join by singing the refrain. But the Responsorial Psalm is much more than that! The singing of Psalms with readings from scripture has been a part of Christian worship from its most ancient origins. The Responsorial Psalm, too, is the Word of God and its importance is emphasized by the fact that it is sung from the ambo, just as the Readings are proclaimed. It could be easy to think that this Psalm is referred to as responsorial because, in some way, it is a response to the First Reading. It s true that it frequently echoes a theme from the First Reading. However, in this circumstance, the term responsorial actually means that the Psalm is formatted to be sung in alternation between the cantor and the people. The role of the Responsorial Psalm in the Liturgy of the Word is to help us to meditate on the Word of God that we have just heard in the First Reading and to prepare us to be attentive to God s Word in the Second Reading and the Gospel. The refrain for our Responsorial Psalm today, the 3 rd Sunday of Easter, is Lord, you will show me the path of life. Last Sunday, at our Vigil Minor celebration, we were blessed to experience a large number of our young people, who had studied and discerned so attentively since September in our Crossfire program and, even a couple of our adult parishioners choosing to follow God s path for their own lives. In all, nine received the sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation. Two received Baptism and First Eucharist. Three made their Profession of Faith, were received into the full communion of the Church and received First Eucharist and Confirmation. Seven received First Eucharist and thirteen received the sacrament of Confirmation. The numbers are impressive but, they aren t nearly as important as the commitment demonstrated by these children, teens and adults. The Lord does, indeed, show us the path of life! But, it is our choice as to how faithfully we follow the path that God has laid out for us. Today s Psalm refrain is especially relevant during this season of Easter. During the coming weeks, what can each one of us do to come to know better the path of life that God is calling us to follow? And even more importantly what commitment is each one of us prepared to make to actually set our feet on that path and to follow it with courage and conviction? Pastor: Fr. 2 Third Sunday of Easter ~ April 30, 2017 Readings for May 7, 2017 The Fourth Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 2.14 a, 36b-41 Psalm: Psalm a, 3b-4, 5, 6 (R. 1) Second Reading: 1 Peter 2.20b-25 Gospel: John A Message from Fr. Bob... We continue to welcome during the Easter Season to our Sunday liturgies, the families of children who are receiving Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. What an incredible gift! The gift of Jesus: Body, Blood, Soul and divinity! Wow! How could they possibly comprehend the gift they are receiving for the first time? How can we, as adults possibly comprehend that Gift?! And - Jesus gives himself totally, completely to us. Do we, in like manner, offer the gift of ourselves to Him and to each other in loving service? Lord, help us to foster our young people in becoming disciples. Just a quick reminder that we are offering another opportunity for adults, of all ages, to grow as mature disciples. That opportunity is a ten week session entitled, "Symbolon," a superb video series focused on the basics of the Catholic faith. The sessions involve viewing a short video and then sharing faith regarding the topic offered. There is also an opportunity to ask pertinent questions in that regard. This is perfect for those who were earlier involved with Alpha, as well as curious Catholics who want to know more about the teachings of the Church. Registration forms can be found in this bulletin (next page) and the pamphlet rack in the narthex. The first session starts this coming Thursday, May 4th, at 7:00pm in Mother of Peace Room. Treat yourself to a whole new horizon in your faith! This weekend, as you know, I am participating in the international Alpha Conference in London, England, along with some wonderful parishioners, Andrew and Erin Jardine, and Suzanne Terpstra. Andrew and Suzanne are the chair and vice-chair of our Pastoral Council. Andrew and Erin are team leaders of our Marriage Preparation team. We are paying the full cost on our own. Leadership training and related costs need soon to be part of our leadership training budget. As every excellent business leadership understands, excellent leadership requires excellent formation. Moving from a maintenance to a mission centered parish will depend on intense formation targets and matching funding. Our parish budget must reflect not only taking care of the building maintenance, but also and more importantly, building up the building of the Body of Christ, with excellent ministry formation. Guest speakers will be the 4 students whom we sponsored for the trip to Ottawa for the March for Life. We will be having a hot lunch served by the Knights of Columbus and there will be transportation for the members who use the bus after the lunch. Knights of Columbus Fish Fry is being held on Friday, May 12th starting at 5:00 p.m. The meal includes fish and chips, coleslaw, ice cream and coffee & tea. Roses for Life Sunday - The Knights of Columbus will be distributing lapel roses at the doors of the Church after each Mass on May 13th and 14th and they ask you to wear them to symbolize your affirmation for a "culture of life". A donation is appreciated and funds raised go to support pro -life programs Mother's Day Memorial Service - St. Peter s Cemetery invites everyone to attend this service to be held in the Mausoleum Chapel on Saturday, May 13th at 2:00 p.m. The celebrant will be Fr. Mark Mahoney from St. Justin s Parish. Seating is available. Mass Requests - We are currently very blessed at our parish with numerous and ongoing Mass requests. Masses are being booked well into late December to date. We continue to welcome all Mass requests and will do our best to meet your special date requests. Training is provided for those who may be new to either of these ministries. ALPHA is a basic introduction to and encounter with the person of Jesus Christ. 6 Catholic Education Week 2017 begins on Sunday, April 30. The Catholic schools in our parish will engage in a series of events to celebrate the ongoing gift of publiclyfunded Catholic education. You are invited to discover what celebrations are happening in your children s school and if possible, attend. Publicly-funded Catholic education has existed in Ontario since 1841 and its graduates have served Ontario and Canada very well. The current generation of students in our publiclyfunded Catholic schools will serve with the same spirit and generosity as their previous generations. This year s Catholic Education Week theme is, Walking Forward Together. The 2017 CEW theme and its five sub-themes are drawn from three contemporary Catholic documents that address the need for reconciliation and renewal in our lives, with our families, in our relationships with others and in our relationship with our environment and our common global future. 7 The first is the 2016 response of the Canadian Catholic Bishops to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission that we need to heal past injustices by Walking Forward Together. The second is the 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si : On Care for Our Common Home by Pope Francis, that emphasizes the cultural roots of our ecological problems and advocates an urgent world collaboration for the care of our common global home. The third document, Amoris Laetitia: The Joy of Love is a 2016 Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis, which applauds our dedication and concern shown to children, families, migrants, the poor, the elderly, and to persons with special needs, as a sign of the Spirit. These supportive relationships are a test of our commitment to show mercy in welcoming others and to help the vulnerable, to be fully a part of our communities.
