4 From Our Pastor My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Fifth Commandment: You Shall not Kill The fifth commandment is perhaps the easiest commandment to understand and seemingly the easiest to fulfill. After all, most of us have not killed anyone lately! However, the Fifth Commandment is much deeper than we might initially think. The wording of this commandment can sometimes be confusing. You shall not kill. What about the spider in the corner? Or what about the defense of our country? Or hunting? The wording might be more properly understood as You shall not commit murder. All human life is sacred from its natural beginning to its natural end. Because we are all made in the image and likeness of God, we have a dignity that is highest of all created things. No one can claim the right to directly destroy an innocent human being. Murder of another person is perhaps the most abominable of crimes. It is a serious sin to take the life of another person. Direct and intentional homicide or indirectly bringing about another person s death by abuse, neglect, or risk-taking is always contrary to God s law. The abortion of an unborn child is rightly called the crime of murder. For this action the Church attaches the penalty of automatic excommunication to those who perform, procure, or cooperate in any abortion. This penalty is not a rejection but rather a medicinal punishment calling the sinner to repentance. God s mercy endures forever and is available to everyone! All Catholics must do all in their power to pray and work towards an end to this murderous practice. Euthanasia is the act of intentionally ending the life of a seriously ill or frail person. Any act or omission which intentionally causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes murder and is gravely contrary to the law of God and the dignity of the human person. Euthanasia is not death with dignity but rather the action of the strong deciding that the weak are no longer productive and must be done away with. Physician assisted suicide is nothing more than suicide and the murder of one s own self. It remains a serious sin. Those who are suffering with serious illnesses or nearing the end of their lives must be assisted by the community and given the medicine necessary to alleviate their pain. Embryonic Stem Cell research and Human cloning, if it results in the death of the human embryo, is also murderous behavior. Under no circumstances can a human life, even at its earliest stages, be taken or harvested for the supposed benefit of others. Adult stem cell research is moral and research in this field of science is highly recommended. Regarding the death penalty, assuming that the guilty party s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. However, if non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people s safety, these are to be employed instead. Today, in our Western society with its developed criminal justice system, the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if practically non-existent. Self defense which results indirectly in the death of the aggressor is not murder. In the case of law enforcement or those in the military, sometimes lethal force is necessary to protect oneself from harm. If non-lethal means are possible, these should always be employed. In the case of war, all citizens and governments are obliged to work for the avoidance of war. In war there are often no winners and many evils and injustices are often committed. However, all nations have the right to provide for their own defense. War must always be seen as a last resort. As we have seen, the Fifth Commandment is much more involved than it initially might appear. Let us all work for a greater respect for human life! May God Bless You. Fr. Girotti Dear Cathedral Parishioners, Some of you may have noticed an additional piece of music that is being sung after the priest has received communion and before the communion chant. We have added the singing of the communion antiphon. The antiphons are part of the Liturgy of the Hours but they are also part of the Mass. There are three parts of the Liturgy that antiphons could be recited or sung. The three parts are: the Entrance Antiphon, the Offertory Antiphon and the Communion Antiphon. At this time we are just adding the Communion Antiphon with the hopes of adding the other two in the future and hopefully to have a resource where the congregation can also participate in the singing of these. In our current missalette the Entrance Antiphons for the Sundays are located on pages 3 7 and the Communion Antiphons are found on pages These antiphons are based on the psalms but can be pulled from other parts of scripture. Why do we sing these? To help lead us deeper into prayer. If you remember, Singing is Praying Twice! I have found the texts of these to be extremely beautiful. Composers are starting to compose metrical settings in the vernacular. Originally they are in Latin and in chant style. Maybe we will use some of those in the future also. Jody Strnad, Director of Music

The donors are longtime supporters of Catholic education and they want to see the families in the community have the opportunity to learn about the Catholic faith. The gift will be used to support both Campaign priorities: (1) Scholarships, and (2) Technology. The Campaign will conclude in May, Pledges and gifts can be made by contacting the GRACE President s Office at October Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis: Apostleship of Prayer People in Despair.
