2 Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More July 29, 2018 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme/Call To Worship The readings for the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time teach us that sharing in the Eucharistic meal is one way we come together as one body and under one Spirit. Introduction To The Word II Kings 4:42-44: In the first reading from the Second Book of Kings, Elisha is able to feed a hundred people with just twenty barley loaves and some fresh grain in the ear. Ephesians 4:1-6: In his Letter to the Ephesians, Paul speaks of the importance of living in a manner worthy of the call you have received. Paul then goes on to list some of the characteristics needed to live a worthy life: humility, gentleness, patience, and love. John 6:1-15: In today s Gospel reading, Jesus is facing a hungry crowd of five thousand men (when women and children are included, the number was likely closer to twenty thousand or more). Given that the vast crowd was probably predominantly (if not exclusively) Jewish, it is very likely that many in the crowd saw, in this sign, a connection to the prophetic tradition of Israel heard in the first reading today from 2 Kings, and may well explain the crowds conclusion that the miraculous feeding was a sign that Jesus was truly the Prophet and came to believe in Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah by the sharing of food and fellowship. All haircuts are provided by Nancy Garcia, a licensed hair stylist Donations will be used by the Respect Life Committee to support women in need On Saturday, August 4 th and Sunday, August 5 th The Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo, Scalabrinians, will speak at each of the Masses at Our Lady of Good Counsel as part of the Archdiocesan New York Mission Coop. The Congregation was founded on October 25, 1895, in Piacenza, Italy, by Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini with the collaboration of Father Joseph Marchetti and Mother Assunta Marchetti. Their mission is the evangelical and missionary service to the neediest migrants. It is carried out through religious, social and cultural activities, and manifests itself through the explicit proclamation of the Gospel, the motivation to the Christian living and of the witness of life, in the different contexts of human mobility; and by welcoming the migrant in his diversity and valuing him as the protagonist of communion among peoples. At each of the Masses at OLGC we will have a special second collection to aid in the mission of this Congregation Preparing for Baptism: To have your child baptized, Parents MUST Pre-Register for a Preparation Meeting and Attend a Meeting on the first Tuesday evening of the month at 7:00PM in the OLGC Rectory. To Pre-Register call by 6pm on the day before the class. Baptisms take place on Sundays afternoons (12:30pm at OLGC & 1pm at STM). THE NEXT SESSION WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY AUGUST 7 TH
