THE PRELUDE The Service of Worship Four O clock in the Afternoon * Please stand, if able * God of Our Fathers Warren God of our fathers, whose almighty hand Leads forth in beauty all the starry band; Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies, Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise. Thy love divine hath led us in the past; In this free land by Thee our lot is cast; Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay, Thy World our law, Thy paths our chosen way. From war s alarms, from deadly pestilence, Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense; Thy true religion in our hearts increase, Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace. Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way; Lead us from night to neverending day; Fill all our lives with love and grace divine, And glory, laud and praise be ever Thine. *THE LITANY Minister: Congregation: Minister: Blessed is the nation whose citizens trust not in themselves but in the Lord. Whose leaders proclaim not their awesome deeds but the mighty acts of God; Whose judges are upright in all their deeds, and just in all their ways; 1 Our National Anthem The story of The Star-Spangled Banner, is the history of the United States of America itself. This history traces not only important events and national heroes but political conflict, philosophical debates, immigration, war, changing social mores, protests, and calls for civil rights all embedded in a dynamic musical account of the democratic experiment. The tale begins in London around 1775 with the writing of The Anacreontic Song, the club anthem of an amateur musicians society and supper club. Set to music by John Stafford Smith, the popular lyric escaped the confines of club ritual and came to be printed in collections and parodied in London s many theaters. The tune arrived in the new United States by 1790, where it served as a core melody in an active broadside ballad tradition. Poets responded to momentous happenings or political controversy in verses set to popular tunes. Anacreon, as it was known, became the vehicle for more than eighty-five different lyrics before 1820, so Key s famous effort was just one of many. For Francis Scott Key, the tune was definitively American, not British, and with its energetic, arching melody, it made a natural choice as a melodic vehicle to celebrate the nation s unlikely victory at Baltimore in Defense of Fort McHenry (the original title of his song that would soon become known as The Star-Spangled Banner). Key s Banner quickly became popular and entered the repertory of American patriotic song. Each subsequent performance of Key s future anthem inscribed words and melody more and more deeply into the collective national consciousness. Galvanized by the US Civil War, The Star-Spangled Banner came to represent not only the flag but the nation itself. Most significantly, the song inspired Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt in 1889 and President Woodrow Wilson in 1917 to revise military regulations to name The Star-Spangled Banner the official anthem of the US military. It would take Congress another fourteen years to officially recognize what had already become obvious to the general public. On March 3, 1931, The Star- Spangled Banner became the national anthem of the United States of America. Key did not write the music, but wrote the words to fit a well-known melody. He wrote the words to the banner during the War of 1812, but the words carry on, change meaning over time, and might have a different meaning for us today. Key writes about justice, courage, God s trust and perseverance. Written in 1814, Key offers a vision for the future of the nation, not a narration of the present. 10
THE LEADERS OF WORSHIP Dr. Bill Turner Senior Pastor Dr. David Greenlee Soloist Mr. Greg Ritchey Pianist Dr. Albin C. Whitworth Director of Music and Organist INSTRUMENTALISTS Jeremy Mulholland, Violin Sarah Reeves, Violin Meg Saunders, Violin Monica Sollman, Violin Lesley Cissell, Violin Kinch Query, Violin Paul Engelbrecht, Viola Dale Jones, Viola Ann Wheeler, Cello Pam Gilkerson, Flute Jon Sisk, Clarinet Paul Hickner, Trumpet T.J. Thomas, Trumpet Mark Mitchell, Trombone Gary Seckman, Trombone Jim Averitt, Timpani 9 Congregation: Minister: Together: * Whose youth see visions, and strive to put flesh on them. Whose prophets not only fight the good fight and finish the race, but keep the faith That all might call on the name of the Lord, and praise God from one generation to another! Our National Anthem O say can you see, by the dawn s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro the perilous fight O er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave O er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war s desolation; Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just; And this be our motto: In God is our trust! And the Star spangled banner in triumph shall wave O er the land of the free, and the home of the brave. *THE CHOIR And still we can see, as the years have gone by. There s a dream in our land like a flame that keeps burning. And the lantern of hope from the harbor still shines, those who seek freedom s dream to its light are still turning. Now we look to the skies and we lift up our eyes! For we know with the dawn we will see our flag rise, see our flag rise! And yes! It s our star spangled banner unfurled as a sight to the free and a hope to the world! O say, does that star spangled banner yet wave o er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 2
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Unison) Almighty God, who in Thy Providence has made us citizens of a land great in privilege and great in opportunity, we give Thee thanks for the country that we love, and whose birthday we celebrate today. We thank Thee for the ideas of faith and freedom that brought our fathers to these shores: for those who through the years have striven to maintain those ideals. For the first president and those who with him fashioned our government: for all who is commonwealth and state, in school and church, in places of business and in homes have sought to serve and preserve the nation s soul. Forgive us for our sins, and make us true to the best in our past, eager for a better future, and above all faithful to Thee. Amen. THE PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. THE CHORAL RESPONSE Channel of Peace arr. Pulkinham Make me a channel of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love; where there is injury, Your pardon, Lord; and where there s doubt, true faith in You: O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved, as to love with all my soul. THE WELCOME THE CHOIR The Battle Hymn of the Republic arr. Wilhousky Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat: Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Our God is marching on. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me. As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, while God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! While God is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. THE BENEDICTION THE CHORAL RESPONSE Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. THE POSTLUDE THE WORSHIP THROUGH TITHES AND OFFERINGS 3 8
THE CHOIR O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine till all success be nobleness, and ev ry gain divine! O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. America My country, tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims pride, From every mountainside, let freedom ring! THE MEN OF AND CHOIR My native country, thee, land of the noble, free; they name I love: I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills, like that above. THE WOMEN OF AND CHOIR Let music swell the breeze, and ring from all the trees Sweet Freedom s song, let mortal tongues awake; let all that breathe Partake; let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong. Our fathers God, to thee, Author of liberty, to Thee we sing; Long may our land be bright with freedom s holy light; Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King. 7 THE OFFERTORY SOLO God Bless America Berlin While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, let us swear allegiance to a land that's free. Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer: God bless America, land that I love, stand beside her and guide her through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans white with foam, God bless America, my home sweet home. How Excellent In All the Earth How excellent in all the earth Thy Name, O God, Who gave it birth; When first upon the moon man trod. How excellent Thy Name, O God. The heav ns Thy glory doth declare; where er we are, Lo! Thou art there. Give all men, for all time to be, the blessing of tranquility, As galaxies and quasars share the knowledge that our God is there! May future aeons call to mind, We came in peace for all mankind. THE CHOIR No Man Is An Island arr. Ringwald No man is an island, no man stands alone; each man s joy is joy to me, each man s grief is my own. We need one another, so I will defend each man as my brother, each man as my friend. I saw the people gather, I heard the music start; the song that they were singing is ringing in my heart. No man is an island, no man stands alone; each man s joy is joy to me, each man s grief is my own. Let There Be Peace on Earth Miller-Jackson Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God as our Father, brothers all are we. Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow: To take each moment, and live each moment in peace eternally! Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. 4
THE CHOIR God of the Ages THE CHOIR My Prayer for America Skillings God of the ages, History s Maker, planning our pathway, holding us fast, shaping in mercy all that concerns us: Father, we praise You, Lord of the past. God of tomorrow, Strong Overcomer, princes of darkness own Your command: What then can harm us? We are Your people, now and forever kept by Your hand. Lord of past ages, Lord of this morning, Lord of the future, help us, we pray: teach us to trust You, love and obey You, crown You each moment Lord of today. O God, Our Help in Ages Past Croft O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home! Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, From everlasting, thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages, in thy sight, are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. THE CHOIR Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all who breathe away; they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come; be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home. Amen. THE SPOKEN WORD THE CHOIR America, Our Heritage Steele High towering mountains, fields gold with grain, rich, fertile farmlands, flocks on the plain, Homes blest with peace, with love, without fears: This is the heritage we ve kept through the years. Wide rolling prairies, lakes deep and broad, canyons majestic, fashioned by God; life lived in peace, contented and free. This is the heritage forever to be. Stout hearts and true, hold fast what is ours, God give us courage through darkest hours, God give us strength and guide with Thy hand America, our heritage, our homeland. 5 This is my prayer for you, America, that God will ever guide your way, leading you on in paths of righteousness, turning the darkness into day; helping you on when you are weary, higher, lifting you up to make you strong. I pray for you America, that God will make you great, that God will show His power ev rywhere. This is my prayer. Not Alone for Mighty Empire Prichard Not alone for mighty empire, stretching far o er land and sea; Not alone for bounteous harvests, lift we up our hearts to Thee. Standing in the living present, memory and hope between, Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving Praise Thee most for things unseen. Not for battleship and fortress, not for conquests of the sword; But for conquests of the spirit give we thanks to Thee, O Lord; For the heritage of freedom, for the home, the church, the school; For the open door to manhood in the land the people rule. For the armies of the faithful, souls that passed and left no name; For the glory that illumines Patriot lives of deathless fame; For our prophets and apostles, loyal to the living Word; For all heroes of the Spirit, give we thanks to Thee, O Lord. America the Beautiful Ward arr. Hayes O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain; For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea. THE WOMEN OF AND CHOIR O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern impassion d stress, A thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine ev ry flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law! 6
