2 2 The Church of St. George Long Lake, Minnesota A Letter from the Pastor WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. Call the office at (952) or us at stgeorge@msn.com if you would like more information about the parish or to register. At this time of Lent every year, I ask myself again: why is the moment of the Lord s Transfiguration so important to the second Sunday of Lent? Every second Sunday of Lent features this scriptural account from one of the three synoptic Gospels. The Lord s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor is found in every Gospel except John. Year A recounts Matthew s version, Year B recounts Mark s version, and this year, Year C, Luke s version is proclaimed. One consideration is to recognize the placement of the Transfiguration of the Lord, in recent years, as part of the more recently introduced Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. We are already familiar with three mysteries of the Rosary: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Now, there has been promulgated a fourth Mystery of the Rosary, called Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary or the Mysteries of Light. It has come to my attention that this particularly new mystery is inserted, more or less, between the Joyful and Sorrowful mysteries of the Rosary. This year I could see each of them unfold week by week to this very Sunday. What are these five decades of the Mystery of Light and where can they be found in the liturgical calendar for this year? In the Cycle C Year (Luke) we can reference quite easily all five focused moments of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary according to the date of the Sunday and the content of the Gospel for that Sunday. For example, the first luminous mystery is the Baptism of the Lord whose Gospel from Luke (Lk 3:15-22) was observed on January 13th. The second Luminous Mystery, the Self-manifestation of Christ at Cana, whose Gospel is found only in John (Jn 2:1-11), was observed on January 20th. The third Luminous Mystery, the Proclamation of the Gospel for the Conversion of Sinners is certainly more widespread than just one given date, for it can be detected beginning on January 27th in Luke s Gospel and thereafter, throughout all the Sundays of February. Now on this second Sunday of Lent, we come to find the fourth Luminous Mystery, the Transfiguration of the Lord (Lk 9:28-36) proclaimed on March 17th. Just to complete the five decades, the fifth Luminous Mystery is the Institution of the Holy Eucharist as the Saving Paschal Meal which is always observed, of course, on Holy Thursday night within the context of the Mass of the Last Supper, which is April 18th, this year. (Notice then, that the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary begin immediately after the fifth Luminous Mystery associated with the Last Supper ends, with the first sorrowful mystery called The Agony in the Garden, just perhaps hours after the pascal meal of the Lord with His apostles present in the upper room.) The event of the Transfiguration marks a decisive moment in the ministry of Jesus. It is a 'revelatory event which strengthens the faith in the disciples' hearts, prepares them for the tragedy of the Cross and prefigures the glory of the Resurrection. This mystery is constantly relived by the Church, who are the people on their way to the eschatological encounter with their Lord. Like the three chosen disciples then at Mount Tabor, the Church contemplates the transfigured face of Christ in today s Lenten liturgy, in order to be confirmed in faith and to avoid being dismayed at His disfigured face on the Cross. In both cases, the Church is the Bride before her Spouse, sharing in His glorious mystery and surrounded by His brilliant light. Our theology teaches us that gifts are never given simply to enrich the individual who receives them, but that they are given to enrich the entire Church. At the Transfiguration, Peter is forbidden to erect tents for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah because Christ has a far greater building project in mind for him. Not three temporary tents on a hillside, but one eternal Church throughout the world. This tells us that when God gives us some special grace - an experience of particularly consoling prayer, or some other moment that transfigures us - we have an obligation to turn this magnificent moment into the words and deeds that will spread the Gospel. The great travelers in the Scripture teach us that the life of Christians is a pilgrimage, with heaven as the goal of the spiritual adventure. We may be blessed with many experiences of transcendence and exaltation, as the disciples do as they witness the Transfiguration, but these moments are not for our enjoyment only. They strengthen us to invite and welcome others to begin the journey to Jerusalem that will transfigure them by the love of Christ. (Think of the purposed of Matthew Kelly s book that was given to all our parishioners at Christmas.) We need the light of Christ to shine on us in Lent as we journey to New Life at Easter, following the path of selfdenial and the many acts of taking up our own cross of sufferings daily too. The guiding rays of light from the Transfiguration are like other little epiphanies for us who travel during these forty days of Lent, looking always upon the transfigured face of Christ crucified. He, once risen from the dead, shines for us with an everlasting radiant light. I now understand better why the fourth Luminous Mystery makes perfect sense to be placed at this appointed time in Lent, as an important and integral part of the cycle of the Mysteries of Light in the Rosary that we pray. By the way, the Luminous Mysteries are often prayed on Thursdays during the week. I am grateful for the fantastic Festival of Music 2019 that happened two weeks ago in our parish community center on Saturday evening, March 2nd. Members of our parish choirs (adults and children) delighted the grateful audience with musical scores set to Color Our World. It was a full house with upbeat music, performed by so many talented individuals under the capable and energetic direction of Kelly Kadlec, our parish music director who created such creative musical numbers this year, and Barbie Leighton, who decorated the community center. The community center was (Father Juettner s Column Continued on p. 5)

The Knights are committed to helping as many of our youth as we can, as they are the future of our parish and beyond. Once again this year, the council is excited to announce scholarships will be offered to St. George high school seniors, current college and vocational technical students, as well as graduates choosing to serve our country. The scholarship program is just one of many ways that our council serves our communities and parish. We have been fortunate enough to have fundraisers help make this scholarship fund a reality and to grow with each passing year. Without the generosity of the parish, this would not be possible. Anyone interested in making a donation to our scholarship fund, please contact Grand Knight, Ed Rundle. Thank you all for your kindness and support of our council. Details and applications will be available to interested students in the coming weeks. Those interested in applying for this scholarship should look for the scholarship display which is located in the church entrance and on the church website ( Read through the application and eligibility requirements, fill out the application, and then submit it to the address listed on the attached form.
