2 The Third Sunday of Lent Saturday and Sunday March 23-24, The Third Sunday of Lent 2019 Let s Not Forget: It s Still Up to Us (Fr. Trey Nelson) Father Trey, are you going to the principal s office because you got in trouble? Father Trey, you know Mrs. Audiffred? Your sister? She use to be my teacher at my other school. Father Trey, do you remember that day when you ate spaghetti at my grandmother s house? And, of course, the ever popular: Father Trey, how can God be everywhere, all at the same time? On the Monday after the First Sunday of Lent, I was walking over to school for my weekly visit with our principal, Mrs. Gardiner. I noticed several children on the playground, so I adjusted my route and ended up right in the middle of them. After being group hugged by about 30 students and almost falling over I started getting question after question. It was truly a fun moment and reminded me again of how much of a privilege it is to be here. As the day progressed, I kept thinking about that moment. I also recalled how I had started my day only a few hours before that. I lead a Mom s prayer group once a month, and we had met that day. One of the common themes in the group discussion that day was the challenge of remaining as in touch as possible with our children s culture and all of the distractions that they (and we) face: technology, peer pressure, Fortnite, and the like. Along with these issues, we talked about how to talk about God with your children, how to talk about suffering, and heaven, and many other topics. Most importantly, we discussed the tension of keeping God and faith at the center of family life when family life is so busy. To be sure, it s not easy, not easy at all. After prayer and a lengthy discussion, we came full circle back to one reality: it s up to us. One day, our children will be adults. They will be grown up. Many will launch out into their careers, be married, and bring children into this world. God willing, many of them will one day be grandparents. In the meantime, however, it is up to us. Trust me, I do not take this lightly, and I realize that it s easier said than done. BUT our job as adults is to set the example. We must be people of prayer. We must be people who keep family life, especially the family meal, center and sacred. We must be people who do not gossip and exhibit prejudice. We must be people who make the best effort to be as healthy as we can be. We must be people who get enough sleep and make sure that our children do the same. And we must, we so, so must be people who DO NOT let technology control us. We MUST control it. Does all of this sound like a tall order? That s because it is. But you, we, none of us are in it alone. We ve been talking a lot here at Saint Jude about making the journey through Lent together. Well, it s bigger than that. We make the journey of life together. And along the way we need to support each other, and this support needs to be visible. We need to encourage one another in being courageous when it comes to setting boundaries for our children, whether it s technology, who they hang around with, or whatever it may be. Parenting for parents would be a lot easier if we more openly encouraged one another in making the tough choices. And the first and most important choice is a daily choice: GOD MUST BE AT THE CENTER OF WHO WE ARE. And prayer is how that happens. In the second reading at Mass this weekend, Saint Paul offers the reminder that we are all called,...to drink from the same rock, and that rock is Jesus Christ. And he cautions us as to what will happen if we get away from that. I share these thoughts with you, because I was reminded, as I stood in the middle of those screaming, happy children, that we have the responsibility to be the person God has created us to be. We do this, first, to give thanks and glory to God. We also do it to hopefully guide our children along the same path. This is our first responsibility and the one that matters more than most others. REMINDER ABOUT ISG STATUS FOR ST. JUDE SCHOOL If you have pre-school age children and plan on applying to SJS in the future, please remember the school policy on Identified Stewardship Giving. In order to qualify for the Identified Stewardship Giver (ISG) admission bracket and corresponding lower tuition rate for the upcoming school year, you must have met the minimum identifiable amount of $ given through the Church offertory collection using envelopes or the portal for online giving and must be a registered parishioner. Contributions must be made by December 22, 2019 to count towards the application year. Contributions made after that date will not be counted toward the ISG status as applications are reviewed and tuition brackets are determined. As another reminder, determination of Catholic versus non-catholic status is based only upon the child s baptism in the Catholic Church.
