3 REFLECTION Lent is a remarkable season for Christians as they enter in solitude and honor God in prayer, alms-giving and fasting. This is a period of grace to renew Baptismal promise and be on the side of Jesus in the fight against devil. Jesus encountered such evil temptations in the desert but defeated it. This victory of Jesus is an encouragement for us Christians that with the Master on our side we will over come all the evils which surround the individuals, the Church, families, and the entire world. The Lord is inviting every believer to get involved in the liberation war with prayer, act of charity and fasting from evil activities or behavior. This is a moment of a second chance for the prodigal children to make a decision and come back to their Loving Father. May the grace of the Lord lead us through this Lenten season to the Paschal Mysteries. - Fr. Benjamin Koka March 10, 2019 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. -- Romans 10:8 LENTEN OBSERVANCES An English Mass will be celebrated every Friday during Lent at 5pm, and will be immediately followed by Stations of the Cross at 5:30pm. Come join us this Lenten Season! CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) RICE BOWL Encounter Norma In Guatemala, we encounter Norma, who as a young mother supports her family and shares her skills with her community. Reflect on the importance of family in your life. How can you contribute to support families in your community? Visit crsricebowl.org for more information. LENTEN SEASON SPIRITUAL GUIDES Limited copies of the Magnificat Lenten Companion, and One Bread, One Body booklets are available in the back of the church to help enhance your spiritual journey during this Lenten Season. Look for them in the new literature rack located in the back on the St. Rita side of the church. Pick yours up now while supplies last! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three pillars of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over deaths darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. --James Field PROLIFE CORNER - 40 Days for Life From March 6-April 14, you re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. 4 Parish Announcements NEW SUNDAY BULLETIN RACKS We have new Sunday Bulletin Racks located on both sides of the main aisle in the back of the Church (next to the Sunday Missile boxes), and at each side entrance, to accommodate our new Bulletin. Copies of the weekly publication, Our Sunday Visitor (OSV), will also be available in these racks, as well as any other relevant and time sensitive flyers and magazines. NEW BOOKCASE AND LITERATURE RACK In preparation for our upcoming 150th Anniversary Celebrations this year, we have cleaned up the side door pews and the back of the church. We ve replaced the large tables in the back with a bookcase and a literature rack. There is also a smaller wood table there for the placement of weekly notices and smaller handouts, prayer cards, etc. We have removed all of the request/order forms from the pews and the old tables (Wish List, St. Stephen Rosary, St. Stephen Spirit Wear and License Plate Holders, Amazon.smile) and consolidated them. If you would like any of these forms, they are now located in the Literature Rack in the back of the church. The Community Kindness Donation Containers have also been relocated to the back of the church, next to the table near the St. Rita statue. The baskets of children s books have been relocated from the side door pews to the bottom shelf of the bookcase located near the Baptismal Font. CHURCH RESTORATION The restoration efforts in the church continue to be a fluid operation. For your safety, and the safety of others, please avoid any areas in the church where scaffolding has been setup. As of this printing, the St. Joseph side entrance is temporarily closed. Please use the South entrance or the W. 54 th entrance for Mass. REMINDER: the boards on the floor in front of the altar railing and in the aisles are not secure. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS AND SAFE! NEED BAKERY ITEMS The St. Stephen Fish Fry Team is always looking for bakery items to serve as dessert at the Lenten Friday Fish Fry Dinners. If you have bakery you d like to donate, you can drop your item off at the Parish Office on Lenten Friday afternoons before 5pm, or at the Michael Building basement cafeteria anytime after 3:15pm. ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS FOR SUNDAY BULLETIN Article submissions for the Sunday, March 24 Bulletin are now being accepted and must be received by no later than close of business March 15 to be included. Contact the Parish Office at if you have any questions. NEW SUNDAY BULLETIN-UNDER CONSTRUCTION We are still formatting and familiarizing ourselves with the layout of our new St. Stephen Sunday Bulletin and will be developing new content and features for future issues. Your patience and understanding while we work through this process is appreciated. Thank you! Ministry Updates OUTREACH MINISTRY The St. Stephen Outreach Ministry served 34 patrons last week from our Food Pantry. Our Community Kindness Food Pantry is open from 9:30am-1pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month. Our Ministry also served an evening meal at the House of Champions a mission that provides a safe setting with a family-like environment where grade school age children are offered opportunities to learn life skills. The second collection this week is for the Food Pantry. Your kind generosity helps us continue with these much needed community services and activities. THANK YOU! PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION (PSR) Our Confirmation candidates are studying the Matthew Kelly Decision Point program, learning to be the best version of themselves. The focus is on the Holy Spirit, who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4) and gave them courage to practice their faith. On Confirmation Day, June 1 st, they will accept responsibility for their faith and destiny. Please continue to pray for them while they embark on this life journey. Please keep our younger students in your prayers as they currently work towards making their First Confession on April 13th. LITURGICAL MINISTRY We want to thank all those who have been serving our parish faithfully as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Acolytes and Ushers. We are in need of more Acolytes, especially children. Parents, please encourage your sons or daughters to become servers. We also need Eucharistic Ministers for the 11am Masses. If you would like more information as to how you can serve our St. Stephen Parish, please call Diana Lipfird at Opportunities to Serve VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Looking for a way to serve the Parish this Lenten Season? Are you a High School teen that needs Service Hours? If so, please contact the Parish Office at to volunteer to help out at our St Stephen Fish Fry Fridays! Dinners are served between 4pm and 7pm every Friday during Lent (including Good Friday) in the basement cafeteria of the Michael Building. Cafeteria clean-up volunteers are the most needed.
