At the conclusion of the Gospel, the priest says The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to Thee, O Christ. SERMON The Rev. Clinton Wilson Please stand, as you are able, for the Creed. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please kneel, as you are able, for the Prayers of the People. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, FORM I BCP, p. 383 With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord, saying 3

For the peace of the world, for the welfare of the Holy Church of God, and for the unity of all peoples, let us pray to the Lord. For the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin, for our Presiding Bishop Michael, for our Bishop John, and for all the clergy and people, let us pray to the Lord. For our President Donald; for the leaders of the nations; for all in authority especially our Governor Bill and our Mayor David; for parishioner Bill Hagerty, our Ambassador to Japan, and his family; and for the members of the armed forces serving our country, especially Matt Smith and John Womack, let us pray to the Lord. For Nashville, for every city and community, and for those who live in them. In the Anglican Communion, we pray for the Anglican Church of Burundi. In our diocese, we pray for Church of the Resurrection in Franklin and Church of the Holy Spirit in Nashville. In our community, we pray for The Temple. In our parish, we pray for the Kindergarten Staff, Teachers, and Students; our missionaries to Our Little Roses, Honduras; our Nashville Fellows Daniel, Alicia, Noemie, and Julie; our Organ Scholar Nara; and our Choral Scholar Luke. Let us pray to the Lord. For the good earth which God has given us, and for the wisdom and will to conserve it, let us pray to the Lord. For the aged and infirm, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick and the suffering. For the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed and the destitute, for prisoners and captives, and for all who remember and care for them, let us pray to the Lord. For all who have died, in the hope of the resurrection, and for all the departed, let us pray to the Lord. For deliverance from all danger, violence, oppression, and degradation and for our enemies and those who wish us harm, let us pray to the Lord. That we may end our lives in faith and hope, without suffering and without reproach, let us pray to the Lord. In the communion of St. George and of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, and all our life, to Christ our God. To thee, O Lord our God. Silence is kept. The celebrant prays the concluding Collect and the people respond Amen. CONFESSION OF SIN BCP, p. 330 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. 4

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. THE ABSOLUTION BCP, p. 332 Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE BCP, p. 332 Please stand, as you are able, for the Peace. THE PEACE BCP, p. 332 The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Our purpose is to commission these persons in the Name of God and of this congregation to a special ministry as Vestry members. Silence O Eternal God, the foundation of all wisdom and the source of all courage: Enlighten with your grace the Vestry of this congregation, and so rule their minds, and guide their counsels, that in all things they may seek your glory and promote the mission of your Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In the Name of God and of this congregation, I commission you as Vestry members of St. George s Church. 5

Please kneel or remain standing, as you are able. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD & THE FRACTION ANTHEM BCP, p. 333 Christ our Passover (Hymnal S152) Martens Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 7

Notes on Receiving Communion All baptized Christians are invited to receive the sacrament, regardless of age or denomination. Those who have not been baptized are welcome to come to the communion rail for a blessing. You may indicate your desire for a blessing by simply crossing your arms over your chest. Gluten-free wafers are available from the intinction cup to the left of the lectern. If it is not easy for you to come to the altar rail, please inform an usher and we will bring the Eucharist to you. An Invitation to Receive Healing Prayer During the distribution of communion, the chapel is open for healing prayer. If you desire prayers for healing, for yourself or others, you may go to the Chapel after receiving communion. A priest and a lay person will be present to pray with you. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION Behold, the tabernacle of God William Harris Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and the Spirit of God dwelleth within you: for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are: for the love of whom ye do this day celebrate the joys of the temple with a season of festivity. Alleluia. Please kneel, as you are able, for the prayer. THE POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER BCP, p. 339 Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. THE BLESSING Please stand, as you are able, for the Processional Hymn. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 439 What wondrous love is this Wondrous Love THE DISMISSAL Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. CLOSING VOLUNTARY Prelude in E Minor, BWV 548 J.S. Bach MUSIC NOTES See What Love uses the text from I John 3:1. Felix Mendelssohn, one of the most beloved composers of his generation, is well-known for reviving the music of J.S. Bach, which was considered by the previous generation to be too difficult. You will hear the influence of Bach through Mendelssohn s use of all four parts of the choir singing their lines at different times. The text of Behold, the Tabernacle of God comes from the antiphons used in the Sarum Rite liturgy. We hear Harris s warm harmony and beautiful organ parts working together with the choir in this anthem. 8

Readings OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 1:4 10 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. NEW TESTAMENT READING 1 Corinthians 13:1 13 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 4:21 30 Jesus began to speak in the synagogue at Nazareth: Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. 9
