Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading From the Israelites, with their law and the prophets, comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33). NOTHING TO FEAR A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. Because God gets lonely for his people was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don t turn to God for saving help until we re in a bind. Peter s role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter s faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying Lord, save me! is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God s hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. BIBLE TRUTH Each person marvels to find in the divine scriptures truths which they themselves have thought out. 5 The image of Our Lady of Jasna Góra has a rich history and is surrounded by a legend that says that the work was painted by St. Luke the Evangelist on the table of the Servant of the Holy Family. They were transported from Jerusalem to Constantinople, from here to Russia. The power of the image was to be experienced by the ruler of the Russian prince Władysław, who won his victory over Lithuanian and Turkish troops besieging Bełz. According to legend, when the intention was to transport the picture to Silesia, horses did not want to move. Then Prince Ladislaus swore he would build a church and put a picture in it and set up a monastery in which the Pauline monks would settle. The oaths kept... Such a history of the painting is contained in the oldest manuscript, whose copy is kept in the Jasna Gora archives. The real origin and time of the image is still a subject of debate among professionals. Probably, the work was brought to Jasna Gora August 31, donated to the Pauline, which he brought to Czestochowa two years earlier, prince Wladyslaw Opolczyk. However, to make it easier to combine jubilee celebrations, it is believed that both Paulini and the Image of Our Lady came to Jasna Gora in To this day, it is unclear whether the Jasna Gora Monastery was, as the legend says, founded specifically for the miraculous image.. When the painting appeared on Jasna Gora, it was already surrounded by worship and worship and also the tradition of many miracles he had done. The monastery of Jasna Gora became primarily a Marian sanctuary. According to Jan Dlugosz this image of Our Lady before 1430 was worshiped not only in Poland but in neighboring countries. In Easter 1430, the first destruction of the image was made by a band of robbers from the Czech Republic, Moravia and Silesia. The attack on Jasna Gora, robbery and iconoclasm, also had a political tone - the prince Ostrogski from Volhynia took part in it, aiming to disrupt King Jagiello with his brothers and start a war. The criminals murdered several Paulines at that time, stripped the image of the Virgin from the votives and decorations, and pierced Madonna's face with a sword, shattered the image into three parts. Paulini carried the destroyed image to Cracow, where it was glued and restored. Medieval conservators failed to cover the painting with tempera paints because it was made of enkaustice (wax technique). They decided to remove the remnants of the old painting and repaired the original board with a faithful copy of the painting. Their image of Our Lady of Jasna Góra is still celebrated today. Tradition says that the restored picture was moved from Cracow to Jasna Góra on a solemn pilgrimage. It was decorated with five silver and gold plates filling the background of the image. They represent the most important scenes of Christ's life. After painting the restaurant, its worship began to intensify and Częstochowa became one of the more famous shrines in Central Europe. At that time, the construction of a large church on Jasna Gora began. In 1466 Czestochowa attacked the Scots Towacz, a commander of a division sent by the Czech king Jerzy Podiebrad against the inhabitants of Wroclaw. The image was not attacked, but another attack on the city made Czestochowa think about the construction of fortifications. They were built in the first half of the 17th century, proper construction began during the reign of Ladislaus IV ( ). Jasna Góra became a fortress and after a very short time she experienced very hard moments. During the "Swedish Flood" 160 soldiers, 20 nobles with service, 70 religious and many women defended Jasna Gora against over 3,000 Swedish troops led by Burchard Müller. Czestochowa was guarded by the prior of Augustine Kordecki. The siege lasted 40 days, from 18 November to 26 December, The Swedish army suffered severe losses. The successful defense of Jasna Gora was of great moral importance for Poles. On April 1, 1656, King Jan Kazimierz made a solemn vow in the Lviv Cathedral, surrendered the country under the authority of Our Lady. The special act announced the election of Mary the Queen and the guardian of Poland. On September 8, 1717, a very important ceremony took place at Jasna Gora - the coronation of the image of Our Lady of Jasna Gora. The crown was founded by the Polish king August II Sas. Częstochowa arrived about 200 thousand pilgrims, the number in those times unprecedented. The coronation rite was very symbolic - it was recognized as the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland. In October 1909 two crowns were erected to decorate the image for almost 200 years and Pope Pius X decided to offer the new crown to the Blessed Virgin. On May 22, 1910, the coronation of the miraculous image took place. The image of Jasna Góra has a height of cm, width cm, thickness cm. It consists of three boards of linden wood, covered with fine woven canvas. The monolayer paint is made with tempera - tive paints on a uniformly chalk mortar with a smoothly sanded surface thickness of 2-3 mm. The picture is framed in a Gothic wooden frame. The Nimbus around the heads of the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus are 5-6 mm high. They were created by carving the board deep into the plane of the entire image. (Father Jerzy Tomzinski, "Jasna Góra - informant"). The Jasna Gora Monastery and the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa have certainly inspired many Polish writers - let us recall Henryp Sienkiewicz's famous "Deluge". Probably the most beautiful poetic prayer to the Queen of the Polish Crown is the moving poem of John Lechonia, created in 1942 in New York. The poem entitled "Our Lady of Częstochowa" contains references to the history of the image and to places of special Marian devotion in Poland. Here are the snippets: Our Lady of Częstochowa, dressed inpearls, All in gold and diamonds, pray for us (-) About you, whose image can be seen in every Polish hut And in the church, in the shop, and in the delicious room, in the hand of what dies, over the cradle of children, And before that day and night, the light is still shining. Which pearls you have from the kings, gold from the knights, In which even a believer believes in nothing, Which you see us with every eye, Our Lady of Czestochowa, have mercy on us! (-) Often floods flooded us flooded the river was poured, And still the monastery in Czestochowa stands as a rock.
