1 The Shepherd s Voice Our mission is to be more visible, to become more connected, and to draw closer, with Christ as our center. March 2015 Inside: Council Highlights Prayer List Valentine Thank you Book Club Adult Education Class Lenten Supper & Study Marc Deaton Performance The events we enter deeply into during this Holy Season of Lent and especially in Holy Week take place in our lives and in our hearts every day. And yet they also took place in a specific historical time and space. In Israel-Palestine. As a Lutheran pastor, I ve always wanted to go and visit the Holy Land (not that every land is not holy) but never really had the gumption or the money. As you know, my daughter Clare has been serving since last August as a Lutheran Young Adult in Global Mission in Jerusalem. This Easter Sunday I ve made plans to go and visit Clare in her ministry site. She will lead me on a whirlwind tour. Most meaningful to me: I ve so wanted to see Nazareth, Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee and of course, the city of Jerusalem. I ll take plenty of pictures and show them to you all when I return after a bit more than a week. If you felt so moved and wanted to kick in ten or twenty bucks to cover my return flight (so that you have a preacher the following week!) I d be grateful for your generosity and caring stewardship. And as I say, I d certainly share with you what I have seen and heard in the places where our Lord once walked and taught, healed, died and rose again. May the Passion of Christ live in our hearts especially in this holy season. 5 5 The Shepherd s Voice MARC DEATON occupies a prominent place among today s most distinctive dramatic tenors. He has established his reputation not only through his superb musicality and electrifying stage presence, but also through his extraordinarily multifaceted repertoire. He has appeared with leading opera companies and orchestras throughout the world, portraying many of the great Wagner, Strauss and Italian roles. He has also won great praise in the field of modern and contemporary music. CO-OP Center provides support services to approximately 500 men and women annually who are transitioning from incarceration to the greater Bridgeport community. Through state grants from the Department of Correction and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Service, CO-OP Center case managers provide financial assistance in obtaining legal identification, access to public transportation, and material assistance, as well as referral to a multitude of other services in the community. Admission is by referral from a DOC agency. CO-OP Center clients are eligible for educational opportunities. CO-OP Center partners with Career Resource, Inc to provide a GED preparation course specifically funded for former offenders. His concert repertoire is just as broad, ranging from classical to modern and comprising virtually all the great tenor parts in such works as the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, Schoenberg s Gurrelieder, Orff s Carmina Burana, Elgar s The Dream of Gerontius, Mahler s Das Lied von der Erde, Britten s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, and Schoenberg s Pierrot Lunaire (he was the first man to perform the role at Vienna s Schoenberg Center). He is widely known for his performances of orchestral songs by Wagner, Strauss, Mahler, Britten and Berg. Mr. Deaton is also an active recitalist with piano and instruments. His recordings include the title role in Tristan und Isolde with the Bulgarian Festival Orchestra on Titanic Records; the October 2011 Centaur Records release of Marc Deaton WAGNER, a solo disc of Wagner excerpts recorded with the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, Calaf in Turan dot with Bangkok Opera on DVD, and Stephen Suber s Upon the Bank at Early Dawn on Centaur Records. Mr. Deaton was also the subject of a muchacclaimed documentary Being Tristan: A Tenor s Journey, which was broadcast on PBS/WNET Thirteen. This hour-long documentary portrays the many facets of Mr. Deaton s career during the period leading up to and during his performances of Tristan in Bulgaria.
