The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prep program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other detail particularly reception facilities. Baptisms: The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children, and, with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Prep Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics, if they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind. Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of advanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass or call the rectory if you would like to receive this sacrament. 3 From Father Doug: Last year around this time someone at St. Pio asked me why I put back the candles on the altar and on the side altars. Last week someone at Sacred Heart asked me the same question. I have spent most of my post-graduate education studying Sacred Liturgy, so even though priests disagree more about liturgy than anything else; I do have a reason from the tradition for everything that I do. Also, I just like candles. One of the most important aspects of liturgy is that involves the whole person, including all of their senses. Colors, flowers, images, sacred vessels, liturgical vestments all enhance what we see in the Mass. Music, speech, chant, bells, and the dramatic sound of the wooden clapper that replaces the bells on Holy Thursday; all these stimulate our sense of hearing. Incense, flowers, and the smell of burning beeswax all stimulate our sense of smell. A few years ago, a doctor prescribed a nasal smell that smelled exactly like Easter lilies, and I was brought back immediately to being an altar server in my childhood smelling the lilies at the altar. In the Holy Land in ancient times candles were very rare. In Jewish worship the lamps were all oil lamps. The miracle of Hanukah was about God providing miraculously enough oil for the lamps in the temple to remain burning. Soon after, beeswax candles began to prevail in the Church. One of the earliest hymns of the Church is the Exultet, the hymn to the Light of Christ at the Vigil of Easter. In the Roman Missal, the new translation thankfully restored part of the ancient text that was left out in It says On this, your night of grace, O holy Father, accept this candle, a solemn offering, the work of bees and of your servants hands, an evening sacrifice of praise, this gift from your most holy Church. But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing fire ignites for God's honor, a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light, for it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious. In Eastern Tradition churches the smell of beeswax is very distinct as candles representing the light of Christ abound. After the immediate interpretation of the beautiful document on the Sacred Liturgy from Vatican II in the late 1960s our liturgy was in many ways left impoverished. As the document began to soak in, many scholars saw that the it is speaking of a continuation of what went before rather than a complete change. Pope St. Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope St. John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI all worked at preserving rather than abandoning many of the things that people remember from childhood. So as many parishes do, we have restored some of the traditions. Candles are an offering of prayer to, and honor for God and the Saints. Blue candles honor the Blessed Mother, a green candle was reserved for images of St. Joseph, red for Christ and the Saints, and a white or clear light traditionally indicated the presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. All are Holy reminders of the need for light in a dark world. 5 OCTOBER 21st, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: Too much information! We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been too much information for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem too much for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. Through his suffering, my servant shall justify many. Isaiah 53:11b TODAY S READINGS First Reading My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11).
