1 November 27, 2016 First Sunday of Advent Stewardship Reflection on Readings IS 2: 1-5; PS 122: 1-9; ROM 13: 11-14; MT 24: Most of us are quite familiar with Jesus comments about faith, hope, and love. As we enter the Advent season, it is a time for us to emphasize all three, but today s readings in particular speak of hope. Isn t that what Advent is all about? Many people in our world, perhaps even here in our parish and community, seem to have a feeling of hopelessness. We should not be among them; worldly thinking produces hopelessness, but our hope is found in Jesus Christ Who has redeemed us and paid for all our sins on the Cross. In the First Reading the prophet Isaiah foresees a time of peace, a time when all literally walk in the light of the Lord. Two phrases commonly quoted are included in this reading: They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. This peaceful world is exactly what we prepare for during this Advent time. Think of how often we hear the word Peace used at this time of year. Think of how many Christmas cards bear that word alone. Peace produces hope and hope produces peace. That is the feeling we are seeking at this time, as we prepare to declare Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. The eminent French author Alexandre Dumas (who wrote The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo among others) once wrote, All human wisdom is summed up in two words: wait and hope. Is that not what we do during Advent? Parish Office 8755 Scarborough Drive Colorado Springs, CO Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm Phone: (719) Fax: (719) office@saintgabriel.net Pastor, Fr. Often called perinatal hospice, [it] provides precious moments together whether the baby is inside or outside the womb which can be cherished forever. Supporting Families Who Receive a Prenatal Diagnosis ( USCCB Secretariat of Pro -Life Activities Consider Making a Year-End Gift to Catholic Church As the end of the year approaches, we begin to reflect upon the many blessings bestowed upon us. The end of the year also provides a great opportunity to thank God for these blessings by gifting to Catholic Church. The benefits of income tax deductions, capital gains savings and other financial benefits are significant advantages that provide an incentive to make a gift at the year-end. A gift can also help support St. Gabriel s for years to come. There are many different ways of contributing a gift. However, two of the easiest and most direct methods to gift are donations of cash and appreciated stock or other investments. You can also make other financially advantageous gifts such as real estate, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, will/trust bequests and IRA/retirement accounts. For more information on how you can help make a difference by contributing a year-end gift to Catholic Church, please contact Fr. Kirk or Marc Lanning in the parish office. Help Needed! Cross Stitchers are needed once again for the completion of the cross stitch samplers for those receiving the sacrament of Confirmation in The sampler takes about 3 hours to complete and is a basic design. 5 Saint Gabriel Ladies Ministry We would like to share pictures from our SGLM Christmas Ornament Exchange that took place on November 10th. It was a fun filled event shared by many of our members. We shop for gifts, bake cookies, decorate our trees, and visit family and friends until we re ready to drop. This year, slow down and focus on what matters most. Join Dynamic Catholic for Best Advent Ever: Rediscover Christmas, one of our free, life-changing programs. You ll receive short inspirational videos, practical tips, and free Christmas music. Your experience of Christmas will be unlike any you ve experienced before! Are you ready for your best Advent ever? Learn more at BestAdventEver.com. The Advent wreath is perhaps the most common Advent symbol, and is also one of the most popular Advent traditions for the home. Each part of the Advent wreath symbolizes our spiritual preparation for the birth of the world's Messiah, Jesus Christ, on Christmas day. The circular shape of the Advent wreath symbolizes eternal life; the purple Advent candles symbolize our repentance and waiting; the pink Advent candle symbolizes our joy of Christmas coming soon, only one week away. The soft candle light rising from the Advent candles symbolize the coming of Jesus as "The Light of the World." Many styles of Advent wreaths are now available, from the traditional evergreen pine branch Advent wreath to contemporary metal-based Advent wreaths. Do it Anyway People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. -this version is credited to Mother Teresa Supporting Our Homeless this Winter. 7 Weekly faith topic Liturgical Colors Paul Turner On a Sunday before Christmas, a visitor to our parish looked out over the gathering congregation and remarked, Isn t it great to see so many people wearing red for Christmas? I politely agreed. But inside I knew another reason: The local football team had a game that afternoon, and a good many church-goers were actually sporting the team colors. Purple vestments and hangings in church during Lent make our eyes take notice. Before we sing about these forty days, before we notice the Glory to God is missing, before they substitute a new Gospel acclamation for that word we re not supposed to say, our eyes have meditated on purple and told us a new season has come. Why do we have liturgical colors? And why do they affect us? Even in the secular world we associate colors with particular celebrations: red and green for Christmas, purple and yellow for Easter, red-white-and-blue for the fourth of July, white for the bridal gown. Schools have colors, so do doctoral robes and, of course, sports teams. The early church used only one liturgical color: white. Favored for the newly-baptized, it symbolized the pure new life they attained in Christ. Colors were few for a simple reason: Colored clothing was so expensive in those days that only the wealthy could afford it. Not until 12th-century Jerusalem, when dyes were more commonplace, did liturgical colors start to become law. After a false start (they wanted black for Christmas and blue for Epiphany) the 13th century dawned with Pope Innocent III s decree for the colors we basically follow today: white for festive days and saints, red for martyrs and the Holy Spirit, green for the daily life of what we now call ordinary time, and violet for the penitential seasons like Lent. Violet, together with blue and black, shared the range of colors for mourning. Hence, even though purple was originally one of the most expensive dyes to obtain, it came to symbolize a season of mourning a time to die to ourselves and live for Christ. Liturgical colors still work their magic, helping us meditate on the seasons of the year and the meaning of life. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
