4 From the Pastor With Ash Wednesday just slightly in the rear-view mirror, we have now begun the holy Season of Lent. Traditionally these forty days are a time of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. It is a season in which those preparing to enter the life of the Church through sacraments of initiation intensify their efforts. It is a season where the People of God are invited to deepen our own relationship with God and God s people. 4 Cambridge, MA In a nutshell, during the 40 days of Lent, we try to improve ourselves as brothers and sisters of Jesus. The end goal is to approach the Easter celebrations with a feeling of mind and heart made new. I may decide to fast from malicious speech and gossip. I may decide to abstain from an immediate negativity toward the world around me. I may decide to share more of my time, talent and treasure with the less fortunate all around me. Whatever it is we know God will bless our efforts. May God, who has begun a good work in us, bring it to completion. St. Patrick s Day Breakfast Sunday, March 17, 10:00-11:30 a.m., Parish Ctr. St. Patrick is the patron saint of the archdiocese of Boston. His feast day falls on a Sunday this year. What better way to celebrate than joining us in the parish center for a delicious breakfast? We will have entertainment: music, singing, dancing and children s activities. Wear your brightest green and Irish regalia. Bring your charm and laughter. Suggested donation $5 per person and $10 per family. Imitating Jesus as the Way to Incarnate Your 40-DayLenten Practice Presented by Robert L. Weber, PhD. Sunday, March 10 10:15-11:15 a.m., Parish Center Lent is a time when we are encouraged to make penitential sacrifices. When deciding what your 40-day practice will be, consider this passage from Matthew (9:13): But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy [also read love, compassion], and not sacrifice,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners. In this light, how might you imitate Jesus through acts of mercy, compassion, and love in your daily life, and make this your Lenten practice? Join us on Sunday morning from 10:15 to 11:15 in the Parish Center. Forty Hours Adoration March 17-19, St. Joseph Church 114 High Street, Medford The 40 Hours Devotion will begin Sunday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m. and conclude Tuesday, March 19 at 8:15 a.m., followed by Mass for the Feast of St. Joseph. Please commit to spend an hour with Jesus. This is the 15th year of this devotion at St Joseph Parish. Daniel J. Harrington, SJ Scripture Lecture Presented by Angela Harkins, Ph.D. Sunday, March 31, 6:15 p.m., Parish Center Jesus Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane Dr. Angela Harkins is an associate professor at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, and educated at Loyola University, Chicago and the University of Notre Dame, where she received her M.A. and a Ph.D. in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity. Dr. Harkins has published extensively on the topic of prayers, emotions, and religious experience in early Jewish and Christian texts. She is currently working on a long- term project on religious experience and the early Christian text known as the Shepherd of Hermas. This lecture will look at the various Gospel accounts of Jesus prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. But, even if He doesn t intervene immediately, the Lord walks by our side and, if we keep going forward, He will open up a new path. 5 March 10, 2019 Lenten Men s Council Wednesdays March 13, 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, 24 7:00-8:30 p.m., Parish Center If you are an adult male (or identify as male) looking for an opportunity this Lent to reflect, pray, converse with and support other men, please join our Men s Council. We will meet 7 times: March 13, 20, 27 and April 3, 10, 17, and 24, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Parish Center. We pray together, reflect, and share thoughts, in an atmosphere of fellowship and trust. It is a personal journey made with the support and company of other men. As a guide, we will read the beloved spiritual writer Henri Nouwen s personal reflection, The Return of the Prodigal Son. This is not a book club. We meet in an atmosphere of trust, respect, honesty, openness and mutual support. No experience with a group is necessary. Join Our Family Choir for Lent First Sunday of Lent An exciting musical opportunity awaits you! For the Sundays of Lent we invite families who like to sing to join our Choir at the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass, beginning March 10. Everyone is welcome. No experience is needed, just a joy for singing. Practice begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and then we sing at the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass. Join Our Adult Easter Choir Have you thought about being in the choir, but cannot make a lengthy commitment? If so, please join our Adult Easter Choir, which provides music for our liturgical celebrations during Holy Week.
