2 BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk The Three O'Clock Prayers in Honor of The Divine Mercy, which was held on the First Friday of August (August 5th), went very well. Many times, to end the period, of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, there would be anywhere from two to four people present. At these prayers, to The Divine Mercy, there were thirty-six. That is very encouraging. It points to the fact that people have a desire to worship, adore and honor God in a very specific and concrete way. We would like to add another moment of prayer within our week. You might remember years ago, that every parish had the Miraculous Medal Novena prayed every Monday or Tuesday. If you can remember back far enough, these prayers were usually held in the evening with Benediction ending them. Why was this? You have to remember that, before the early 1970 s, no Masses were allowed to be celebrated after the 12 o clock hour. That is why many times, in parishes, during the 12 o clock hour, you had odd starting Mass times (12:05pm or 12:10pm, 12:40pm or 12:55pm). When Masses were allowed during the evening hours, that great moment of adoration (Benediction), fell into disuse and Novenas were prayed after the Mass. Every Saturday, before the 12:10pm Mass, prayers are prayed to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. However, these are not the prayers of the Novena to the Miraculous Medal. Where these prayers, on Saturday morning, come from, or are based on, are a mystery. I would like to restore the Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, to its proper prayers. Through the generosity of a married couple, who are parishioners, the Novena booklets have already been purchased. We will begin praying the Novena, every Monday, following the 12:10pm Mass. At the end of the Novena, there will be an opportunity to reverence the relic of Saint Catherine Laboure, who is the visionary of the Miraculous Medal. We will begin the Novena, to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal on Monday, September 12th (which just happens to be the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary). Why Monday, and not Tuesday? I had to pick a day and since Monday, September 12th is the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary, I took it as a sign. We Need to Update our Census Information PAGE TWO We have come to realize, like that of many parishes, our census information is way out of date. Just to give a couple of examples, of situations, that have happened within the last month: A parishioner left a book (with their name printed on it) in the Church. We looked them up in our census information. Even though they have been here for years they never registered; and therefore we had no way of contacting them to tell them we had the book. Only many days later, did she come to the Rectory, asking if anyone had turned it in. Another example: A parishioner dropped a loose check in the collection but is was unsigned. The check only had their name printed on it. We looked them up in our records and yes, they were registered so we called the number we had. That number was no good. So, we then mailed it, to them, and received the envelope back saying no longer at that address. This has been happening more often than not. Many people think they are registered parishioners, but are not. Please do not equate receiving offertory envelopes with being a registered parishioner. We have many people, who are registered, but don't want to receive church envelopes. It is important that you update your Church registration information. You can come into the Rectory and fill out a new census form or you can even call Teresa (our Office Manager) and she will be happy to send you a new form; and you can drop off the completed information, in the collection basket, or bring it to the Rectory. When You Are On Vacation When you are on vacation, don't take a vacation away from the Lord. You can always find a Catholic Church at

3 The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15 There is no greater command, from Jesus himself, than to go out and proclaim the gospel. This is not a task left to bishops, priests, deacons and religious; it is a command given to all Christians. There is no more important ministry than proclaiming the gospel and transmitting the faith, particularly to the younger generations. Here at Blessed Sacrament, as in each parish within the Archdiocese of New York, we have a comprehensive religious education program. This program exists, to pass on the Faith, to the youth of our parish. Without this passing on, of the Faith, there will be no Church, in the future. Our program needs your help. Firstly, we need your prayers. Secondly, we need dedicated people to volunteer to answer the call of the Lord. We need people who are willing to spend quality time, with our children, teaching them and guiding them, in the faith. We need people who are willing, to take the time, to deepen their own faith; so they may more effectively pass along their faith to the future generations of believers. I will not lie to you; the task may not be easy; it will take dedication and conviction but, the rewards are far greater than the efforts. Along with this neglect, came an accompanying neglect of the organ s greatest composer, Johann Sebastian Bach, whose work fell into relative obscurity after his death. Fortunately, for subsequent generations, both of these cultural missteps were remedied by the young Felix Mendelssohn, who marshaled his considerable continental renown in the service of revitalizing his twin passions: Bach and the organ. His famed 1829 revival of Bach s St. Matthew Passion was accompanied by his composition, of a body of solo organ literature, that was deeply indebted to Bach, yet simultaneously, brought the organ into the dawning German Romantic era. Himself a virtuosic organist, Mendelssohn frequently advised the churches he visited in expanding their instruments; and his works display such expansive scale that they would ve been impossible to play on the paltry and abused organs he frequently encountered. The idiomatic writing in the Organ Sonata in B-Flat Major displays Mendelssohn s intimate familiarity with the organ s full capabilities. The outer movements constitute a full-fledged prelude and fugue pair in the grand Bachian tradition, while the effervescent inner movements employ the organ s softer and more coloristic stops, creating a lyrical sound world much akin to their composer s Songs Without Words for solo piano. 4 August 14, 2016 Registration for Religious Education Classes for Children It is important that every child, in our Parish, have a firm and complete knowledge, of the Roman Catholic Faith. The Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program is currently accepting re-registrations and new registrations for students, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade, for the school year You can find registration forms in the back of the Church or for more information, please call the Religious Education Office at (914) , Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Se Habla Espanol. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you an adult, who has been attending Blessed Sacrament Church, but are not a Roman Catholic? Do you know a family member, neighbor or friend who has expressed a desire to become a Roman Catholic but does not know how to go about it? Are you a person who was Baptized in the Roman Catholic Church but never received any other Sacrament? Then, the R.C.I.A. (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is for you and for them. What is the R.C.I.A.? It is a series of instructions that begin in late September and end with the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday). Who can join the R.C.I.A.? Any person who has not been baptized, anyone baptized a Catholic but never received any other sacrament, or anyone who was baptized into another religion but now desires to be a Roman Catholic. When are the classes held? They will be held on Saturday mornings and will last for just over an hour. Of course, attendance at Sunday Mass will also be a requirement for those who desire to become a Roman Catholic. What do you need to do in order to join this class? Please contact Father Luciano. Rose Ambrosino Wisdom of the Saints Saint John Eudes said: "He belongs to you, but more than that, He longs to be in you, living and ruling in you, as the head lives and rules in the body. He wants His breath to be in your breath, His heart in your heart, and His soul in your soul." Our wish, our object, our chief preoccupation must be to form Jesus in ourselves, to make His spirit, His devotion, His affections, His desires and His disposition live and reign there. All our religious exercises should be directed to this end. It is the work which God has given us to do unceasingly. "I ask you to consider that our Lord Jesus Christ is our true head and that you are one of His members. He belongs to you as the head belongs to its members; all that is His is yours... You must make use of all these, as of your own, to serve, praise, love, and glorify God."

Singers of all ages, voice types and levels of training are welcome -- no prior experience necessary. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn new things and to praise God through the gift of music. When the priest says: The Body of Christ, we immediately respond: Amen and then, if receiving in the hand, we place Our Lord immediately into our mouth. We do not turn and walk away with the Blessed Sacrament. We do not make the sign of the Cross with the Blessed Sacrament, in our hand, and we do not raise the Blessed Sacrament up in the air.
