2 THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY MOTHER OF GOD MOTHER OF THE CHURCH The Liturgical Year celebrates the Birth, the Public Ministry, the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Our Saviour Our Lord Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit. It begins on the First Sunday of Advent and concludes with the octave of the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the Universe. During the Liturgical Year there are several occasions of special devotion to Mary, the Mother of Our Saviour, for example, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in December; the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes in February; the Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima in May; the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in July; the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in August; the Feast of the Nativity of Mary in September; the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in November, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God in January and the many Saturdays designated as Memorials of the Blessed Virgin Mary on which Saturday Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God on New Year s Day, the octave of Christmas. When we say the Hail Mary we acknowledge that Mary is the Mother of God as we recite Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen. The Gospel tells us that Mary is our mother too: When Jesus saw His Mother and the disciple He loved standing beside her, He said to His Mother, Woman, here is your son. Then He said to the disciple Here is your mother. (John 19: 26-27) The Liturgical celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother was added to the Universal Liturgical Calendar in 2018 and is now celebrated annually as a Memorial on the day after Pentecost. In his homily during Mass on the Memorial in 2018 Pope Francis, noting that in the Gospel Mary is always described as the Mother of Jesus, said her motherliness is emphasized throughout the Gospels starting with the Annunciation.

3 The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy refers to the Saturday Memorials of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a remembrance of the maternal example and discipleship of the Blessed Virgin Mary who, strengthened by faith and hope, on that great Saturday on which Our Lord lay in the tomb was the only one of the disciples to hold vigil in expectation of the Lord s resurrection; it is a prelude and introduction to the celebration of Sunday, the weekly memorial of the Resurrection of Christ; it is a sign that the Virgin Mary is continuously present and operative in the life ( roman_curia/congregations/ccdds/documents/rc_con_ccdds_doc_ _versdirettorio_en.html). There are many prayers - the Hail Mary, the Hail Holy Queen, the Memorare, the Regina Coeli and the Litany - which help us to show devotion to Mary. In the Litany, Mary s intercession is asked for under her many titles including Mother of God, Mother, Cause of Our Joy, Refuge of Sinners, Queen conceived without Original Sin, Queen of the Family, Queen of Peace. We honour Mary and invoke her intercession in these and other prayers and hymns, by attending devotions and novenas and by praying at her shrines at home or abroad. Let us honour Mary the Mother of God and Mary Mother not only on the special days of Marian devotion but everyday as we recall that at Fatima Our Blessed Lady asked us to say the Rosary everyday for peace and after each decade to say O Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to Heaven especially those in most need of your mercy. 12 On being greeted as the Mother of my Lord (Luke 1) by her cousin Elizabeth, Our Blessed Lady replied with the song of praise we know as the Magnificat. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my Saviour because He has looked upon His lowly handmaiden. Yes from this day forward all generations will call me blessed for the Almighty has done great things to me Holy is His name, and His Mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear Him. He has shown the power of His arm, He has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry He has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away. He has come to the help of Israel His servant, mindful of His Mercy according to the promise He made to our ancestors of His Mercy to Abraham and to His descendants for ever.
