Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candles As the candles of the Advent Wreath are lit, the congregation will sing Verses 1 and 2 of Light One Candle (ELW #240) (CCLI # ) Light one candle to watch for Messiah; let the light banish darkness. He shall bring salvation to Israel, God fulfills the promise. Light two candles to watch for Messiah; let the light banish darkness. He shall feed the flock like a shepherd, gently lead them homeward. SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM THE FIRST CHRISTMAS: A CHILDREN S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT By Louise Egan adapted by Judy Poellet The congregation sings: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (first 2 verses) ELW #257 The story begins.. The angels arrive and along with the congregation sing: O, Little Town of Bethlehem ELW #279 After the Narrator tells of Mary laying Jesus in the manger, the angels lead the congregation in singing the first verse of: Away in a Manger ELW #278 After the Narrator tells of the angles announcing the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, the congregation and angels sing: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing ELW #270 After the Narrator tells of the Shepherds praying, the congregation sings: Joy to the World ELW #267 Mary says O Come Little Children followed by the congregation singing: O, come, little children O come, one and all. To Bethlehem haste to the manger so small. God s son for a gift 2
3 has been sent you this night to be your Redeemer your joy and delight. After the Narrator tells of the three Wise People, the congregation sings: We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we traverse afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night! Star with royal beauty bright; Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light! Born a King on Bethlehem s plain Gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, Over us all to reign. (Refrain) Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, gladly raising, Worshipping God Most High. (Refrain) Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. (Refrain) Glorious now behold Him arise; King and God and Sacrifice; Heav'n sing alleluia: Alleluia the earth replies. (Refrain) After the Wise People give Jesus their gifts, the congregation sings: Silent Night, Holy Night ELW #281 Ending.. The children begin with the refrain of Go Tell it on the Mountain ELW #290 and the congregation joins in at verse 1. Prayers of the People As we await the coming of Christ, we pray in hope for the church, the world, and all of creation. 3
4 Prepare your church to share the good news, life-giving God. Put your word within us and dwell among us. Send us out to proclaim the mercy and salvation that abides in you. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Protect the creation, life-giving God. Sustain the mountains and hills. Restore the rivers. Give us wisdom and compassion to care for wilderness areas and urban ecosystems. Move us to care for your creation in all its forms and richness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Purify the hearts of all people, life-giving God. Remove the hate that lives within us and among us. Mold us into peacemakers. Raise up leaders rooted in your love and fed by your word. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Comfort all who hurt, life-giving Gld. Wrap them in your tender care. Remember the forgotten and send us out to share your love with them. Be with the wandering, the worried, the homeless, and the sick. We pray especially those we bring before you now out loud or in silent prayer. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Bless this congregation, life-giving God. Give strength and joy to worship leaders, musicians, and our altar guild as they prepare the way for the celebration of the Christ child s coming among us. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We pray for our Bishops Susan and Sid, all our bishops, pastors, diaconal ministers, our lay leaders and all in ministry, and our brothers and sisters in Christ around the globe. Strengthen them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and a knowledge of how to share it with others. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We remember the generations who have shown us your faithfulness, live-giving God. Shine your light on those who mourn and prepare us for that day when we will see you face-to-face. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The Lord s Prayer Peace of Christ Please share our Lord s gift of peace with one another. Offering (Please be seated) Offertory Prayer (Please rise) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray together, Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us: our selves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Benediction SENDING Sending Hymn Angels We Have Heard on High #289 4
