Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! 2 O come, O Wisdom from on high, who orders all things mightily; to us the path of knowledge show, and teach us in her ways to go. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! 3 O come, O come, great Lord of might, who to your tribes on Sinai's height in ancient times once gave the law, in cloud and majesty and awe. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! 4 O come, O Rod of Jesse's stem, from every foe deliver them that trust your mighty power to save, and give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! 5 O come, O Key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! 6 O come, O Dayspring from on high, and cheer us by your drawing nigh; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death's dark shadow put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! VENI EMMANUEL

7 O come, Desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind; O bid our sad divisions cease, and be for us our Prince of Peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel! The Gathering of the Community X The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And with thy spirit. Invitation to Confession When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ, let us confess our sins. Please kneel, if able, or you may be seated. Silence is kept. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things and judge of all people: We acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from time to time most grievously have committed, By thought, word and deed, Against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy name; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; X pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy upon us Christ have mercy upon us Lord, have mercy upon us MERBECKE

The Collect of the Day God of power and mercy, you call us once again to celebrate the coming of your Son. Remove those things which hinder love of you, that when he comes, he may find us waiting in awe and wonder for him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Lighting of the Advent Candle All children and young people are invited to come to the Chancel steps for the lighting of the Advent wreath. All Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Those who follow me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly. The Sovereign Lord has filled me with his Holy Spirit. He has chosen me to bring god news to the poor, to heal the broken-hearted, to announce release to captives and freedom to those in prison. He has sent me to proclaim that the time has come when the Lord will save His people. (Isaiah 61: 1-2) We light this candle to remind us of our task in preparing our world for the coming of the Messiah. We are called to be prophets who will relieve suffering, promote justice, and bring hope to those who live without light and love. The third candle is lit. Let us pray. Father, you have called us to share in Christ s ministry in a troubled world. Fill us with your Spirit, so that we may faithfully proclaim your word in all that we say and do, until your Kingdom comes upon the earth. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word (please be seated for the readings) A Reading from the book of Zephaniah. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart,o daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with

all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Zephaniah V/ The Word of the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God. PSALM BLESSED is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, / and whose hope is in the LORD his God; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that therein is; / who keepeth his promise for ever; 6 Who helpeth them to right that suffer wrong; / who feedeth the hungry. 7 The LORD looseth men out of prison: / the LORD giveth sight to the blind. 8 The LORD raiseth up them that are fallen: / the LORD loveth the righteous. 9 The LORD careth for the strangers; he upholdeth the fatherless and widow: / as for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside down. 10 The LORD thy God, O Sion, shall be King for evermore, / and throughout all generations. A Reading from Paul s Letter to the Philippians. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians V/ The Word of the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Gospel Acclamation. Gospel Acclamation Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. V/ The Lord be with you. R/ And with thy spirit. V/ X The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. R/ Glory be to thee, O Lord. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our ancestor ; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children

to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. And the crowds asked him, What then should we do? In reply he said to them, Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise. Even tax-collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, Teacher, what should we do? He said to them, Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you. Soldiers also asked him, And we, what should we do? He said to them, Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages. As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. Luke V/ The Gospel of Christ. R/ Praise be to thee, O Christ. Sermon The Rev d Fr. Jonathan Rowe Sung The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God, of God; Light, of Light; very God, of very God; begotten, not made; being of one substance with the Father; through whom all things were made: who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory MERBECKE

to judge both the quick and the dead: whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. And I believe one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, X and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the Faithful (Please kneel, if able, or you may be seated) Response: Lord, hear our prayer. Comfortable Words Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him. Come unto me all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. Matt 1.28 God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3.16 Hear also what Saint Paul saith. This is a true saying, and worthy of all to be received, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1.15 Hear also what Saint John saith. If anyone sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2.1,2 The Peace (please stand) Sung The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Hymn Stand Up and Bless the Lord 1 Stand up and bless the Lord, you people of God's choice; stand up and bless the Lord of hosts with heart and soul and voice. ST. THOMAS

2 Though high above all praise, above all blessing high, who would not fear God's holy name, and laud and magnify! 3 O for the living flame from God's own altar brought, to touch our lips, our minds inspire, and wing to heaven our thought! 4 God is our strength and song, who makes salvation ours; then be God's love in Christ proclaimed with all our ransomed powers. 5 Stand up and bless the Lord; the Lord your God adore; stand up and bless the glorious name henceforth for evermore. Prayer over the gifts God of hope, renew in us the joy of your salvation and make us a living sacrifice to you, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving (Please kneel, if able, or you may be seated) Priest The Lord be with you. MERBECKE People And with thy spirit. Priest Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Priest Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things, through Jesus Christ our Lord; who in the fullness of time came among us in our flesh and opened to us the way of salvation. Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

Sung Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, WILLIAN Heaven and earth are full of thy glory, Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. People X Blessed is he he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ s most holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants, with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee, and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of

this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen. The Lord s Prayer And now, as our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say, Sung Our Father, who art in heaven, LANGDON hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Silence Fraction (The Breaking of the Bread) Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, Trusting in our own righteousness, But in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy So much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, Whose property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, So to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, And to drink his blood, That we may evermore dwell in him, And he in us. Amen. Agnus Dei (O Lamb of God) Sung O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace. WILLIAN

Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to the banquet of the Lamb. People Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. The Communion All people are welcome to receive the Blessed Sacrament (Holy Communion) at our Altar. You may kneel or stand to receive. Communion Hymn Bread of the World in Mercy Broken Bread of the world, in mercy broken, Wine of the soul, in mercy shed, by whom the words of life were spoken, and in whose death our sins are dead: look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears by sinners shed; and be thy feast to us the token that by thy grace our souls are fed. RENDEZ A DIEU The Prayer after Communion Merciful God, may this eucharist free us from our sins, fill us with unending joy, and prepare us for the birthday of our Saviour. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, who is Lord now and for ever. Amen. The Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord:

And the blessing of God almighty, the X Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Closing Hymn Hark, a herald Voice in Sounding 1 Hark, a herald voice is sounding: "Christ is nigh," it seems to say. "Cast away the dreams of darkness, O ye children of the day!" 2 Wakened by the solemn warning, let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, our sun, all sloth dispelling, shines upon the morning skies. 3 Lo, the Lamb, so long expected, comes with pardon down from heaven; let us all, with deep repentance, pray that we may be forgiven, 4 that when next he comes with glory, and the world is wrapped in fear, with his mercy he may shield us, and with words of love draw near. 5 Honour, glory, might, and blessing to the Father and the Son, with the everlasting Spirit, while eternal ages run. MERTON The Dismissal V/ Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God. Postlude
