2 ST. LUKE AND THE GOSPEL OF MERCY 2019 Last weekend we began ordinary time after all our preparations during Advent and then our celebrations of Christmas. Mind you, we will not be in ordinary time for very long because Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent is fast approaching (Ash Wednesday is on the 6 th March this year). So, what do we mean by ordinary time in our church calendar? The ordo (the book that we use in the sacristy to make sure that we are celebrating the correct Mass for each day in the calendar) says this about ordinary time Besides the times of the year that have their own distinctive character, there remains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness. This period is known as ordinary time. In this sense, ordinary time is also, like any other time in our faith journey an extraordinary time as we celebrate and grow in God s love and care for us, as we deepen our faith and above all as we receive God s love and mercy through the sacraments, through prayer and in so many other ways. Unlike Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter we do not focus on particular aspects or events in Jesus life, death and resurrection, but we do follow Jesus through His public ministry. Each year we do this guided by one of the three synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark or Luke) and this year, as we are in cycle C, Saint Luke is our guide. Each of the Gospel writers presents us with his picture of Jesus. Of course, there are many similarities and common areas in each Gospel account and all the Gospels were written with the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit; but there is also a rich diversity. Each gospel writer (or evangelist) writes for a particular church community and situation and each evangelist highlights particular aspects of who Jesus is and the nature of His mission. It is rather like knowing an incredible person and being asked to write an account of their life. We would all write many of the same things about them, but we would also stress different aspects and events. As St. Luke in our Gospel reading this weekend tell us: I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. St. Luke focuses on the universal nature of God s love revealed in Jesus Christ and especially on God s great mercy. In fact, St. Luke s Gospel is often called the Gospel of mercy and so having St. Luke as our guide is particularly helpful as we think of that great need for mercy. He also writes about Jesus special care and concern for the sick, the poor and the outsider. Only in his Gospel, for example, do we find parables such as the Good Samaritan, or the Prodigal Son and only St. Luke mentions the repentant thief, or the encounter between the risen Jesus and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. He also gives us the most detail about the birth of Jesus at Christmas and he also tells us much about Mary, our blessed mother (with his accounts of the Annunciation or the Visitation). A great project then for our ordinary time until we begin Lent would be to take some time to read a passage of his Gospel each day. Perhaps we could to buy a book or commentary on St. Luke s Gospel (or check online) to help our understanding of his account of Jesus life, death and resurrection. So, as we begin this period of ordinary time and continue our Year of Mercy, may it be for each of us at the Parish of the Holy Trinity also an extraordinary time of encountering and experiencing anew God s love and mercy in our midst; guided and enriched as we are by our companion for the journey in the shape of Saint Luke and his Gospel of mercy Fr. As part of the traditions surrounding this feast (which recalls the revelation of Christ as the light of the world) candles which are used in the liturgical celebrations are blessed for use throughout the coming year. We encourage parishioners to bring candles (which will be used for prayer in your homes) to Mass on this evening to have them blessed. A table will be set up a table at the front of the church for candles which you would like to have blessed. You may place the candles there before Mass begins, and pick them up after Mass has concluded. S U N D A Y, F e b r u a r y 3 FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE Blessing of Throats On this feast day we have a prayer for healing called The Blessing of Throats. In our parish, the Blessing of Throats will be celebrated after each of the weekend Masses on the 2nd and 3rd of February. Re-igniting Our Faith We need to keep our Church fresh, vibrant and welcoming. Our campaign therefore gives thanks for the past, celebrates the present and provides for the future. Now is the time for us to seize the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to our baptismal vows and be active witnesses for Jesus in our own day to open hearts to the truths of His Gospel. As we enter the next phase we are beginning to contact parishioners with more detailed information about the campaign. Let us go forth and together build for the future. Let us Re-ignite our Faith! CARE - AN ART SHOW One of the families that the Holy Trinity Care Team has been assisting is having an art show regarding caring for people who have Alzheimer s Disease. Through charcoal drawings, fresco, sculpture and painting, artist Maryna Bilak documents what it means to be a caretaker for someone with Alzheimer s, and delves into the varied roles each person involved plays, including the patient. Opening reception will be Saturday, Feb. 2, 5-7 p.m. at Hudson Hall, 347 Warren St. Hudson. At 6:30 pm Pianist and composer, Michael S. Jaynes will perform Curvature of the Mind, a piece inspired by his experience caring for his own mother, an Alzheimer s sufferer.

There is a basket in the vestibule of the Church with each candidate's first name written on a slip of paper. Being a teenager has never been easy; the forces of darkness and evil seem even more prevalent today and our best weapon against these forces is, and always has been, prayer. Won't you please consider taking one of these names and committing to praying for that special candidate? Our hope is to wrap these students in a protective coating of prayer to guide them on their journey. HOOP SHOOT Knight of Columbus Hudson Council #316 will be hosting their annual Free Throw Competition at the Montgomery C. Smith Elementary School Gymnasium in Hudson on February 2nd at 1pm. The competition is open to all boys and girls ages 9-14 who reside in Columbia County. The contest is free to all, participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate to be eligible. All contest winners will be eligible to participate in the Regional Championship in late February.
