It helps us to hold the whole truth about people and situations rather than just a part of the truth. It helps us avoid black and white thinking and to see that many situations and all people are complex and cannot easily be put into simple well-defined categories. As I continue to reflect on this, it struck me how often we simplify people by defining them according to one trait or one action. It can be the root of bias by assuming that one person with particular characteristic is the same as all others, be they white people, musicians, homosexual men and women, plumbers, or Southerners. The same thing happens when people define others according to their past. It might seem more benign, as when we continue to use titles of honor for leaders who no longer hold that office. It is less benign when people have committed a crime and served their sentence. And it s more harmful when we refuse to forgive, despite Jesus clear command and example. And I started to think of examples in our own faith. What would happen if people had continued to condemn St. Paul (who had murdered Christians)? Or St. Augustine, who lived with a woman and had a child although he was not married, and went on to become a bishop! The saints were not perfect although we sometimes paint them as if they were. We are -all of us -- saints AND sinners. What makes this possible is repentance and conversion on our part. God makes it possible for all of us; God does not hold our past over us. God then asks us to do the same for others, so that they are not dragged down or confined by their past. This is forgiveness. Reflections on Personal Holiness by Pope Francis (6) Pope Francis reminds us that the capacity to be holy comes from our baptism, not from ourselves. He explains: "Let everything be open to God; turn to him in every situation. Do not be dismayed, for the power of the Holy Spirit enables you to do this, and holiness, in the end, is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life. (Galatians 5:22-23) When you feel the temptation to dwell on your own weakness, raise your eyes to Christ crucified and say: "Lord, I am a poor sinner, but you can work the miracle of making me a little bit better." In the Church, holy yet made up of sinners, you will find everything you need to grow towards holiness. The Lord has bestowed on the Church the gifts of scripture, the sacraments, holy places, living communities, the witness of the saints and a multifaceted beauty that proceeds from God's love 'like a bride bedecked with jewels.'" (Is 61:10) (para. 15 in Gaudete et Exsultate) Do you believe that the Holy Spirit can help you become holy, and beautiful in God's eyes? What shall you pray for?
