Biographical Hoyt Leon Hickman, born on May 22, 1927 to Leon Edward Hickman and Mayme Hoyt Hickman, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a minister, author, and recognized authority on worship in the Methodist Church. Serving for over twenty years as Director of Worship Resources Development for the General Board of Discipleship, Hickman contributed to discussions concerning liturgical tradition and wrote extensively on contemporary debates over worship and communion practices. Hickman served in the U.S. Navy from He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Haverford College in 1950, Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1953 and Masters of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) in Christian Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in On December 16, 1950, Hickman married Martha Jean Whitmore ( ). Martha Jean Whitmore was a prolific and award-winning writer of over twenty works, best known for her book, Healing After Loss (1994). Together they had four children, Peter, John, Stephen and Mary. Hickman was ordained as a Deacon in 1952 and Elder in 1953, serving at various churches including the First Methodist Church in Windber, Pennsylvania ( ), Claysville and Stony Point Methodist Churches in Claysville, Pennsylvania ( ), College Hill Methodist Church in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania ( ), and Cascade United Methodist Church in Erie, Pennsylvania ( ). Hickman worked as Executive Secretary of the United Methodist Commission on Worship from From , Hickman was a member of the National Program Committee on the Christian Family Movement and member of the Worship Commission of the World Methodist Council from He was President of the Erie County Council Churches from and Board Director of the Liturgical Conference from He served as Director of Worship Resources Development for the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville from In this role, Hickman worked as the first full-time national staff member in the field of worship in the United Methodist Church. During this time, Hickman also taught classes on worship as a guest lecturer at Vanderbilt University in 1977 and His work as Director of Worship Resources Development and service for over twenty years as a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy and "Societas Liturgica" established Hickman as an authority on Methodist liturgy. In his retirement, Hickman has remained active in scholarly work. He taught as a Visiting Professor of liturgical studies at Drew University from , teaching "The Revised Common Lectionary," "Public Worship in the Methodist Tradition" and "The Church at Worship." He served as Acting Dean of the Drew Theological School from September-December He served as the General Editor of the hymnal supplement, "The Faith We Sing" in He also continued to write a freelance column for the Interpreter Magazine entitled "Did you Know?" from and maintained correspondence with Page 1

Hickman's published works include, "United Methodist Altars" (1959), "At the Lord s Table" (1981), "Strengthening Our Congregation s Worship" (1981), "A Primer for Church Worship" (1984), "United Methodist Altars: A Guide for the Congregation" (1984), "The Acolyte s Book" (1985), "Holy Communion" (1987), "Planning Worship Each Week" (1988), "Worship Resources of the United Methodist Hymnal" (1989), "Workbook on Communion and Baptism" (1990), "Being a Communion Steward" (1991), "United Methodist Worship" (1991), and "Worshiping with United Methodists, Revised Edition" (2007). He contributed to "How to Be the Perfect Stranger" ( ). Hickman was also an editor of the "Supplemental Worship Resources" series, the "Lectionary Worship Aids" ( ), "Seasons of the Gospel" (1979), "Handbook of the Christian Year" (1986) and "The New Handbook of the Christian Year" (1992). The Hoyt L. Hickman Award for Outstanding Liturgical Scholarship and Practice is awarded annually by The Order of St. Luke to a college student who has demonstrated leadership in worship and quality scholarship in the study of liturgy. Scope and Content Note The Hoyt Hickman papers are comprised of Hickman's publications, office files, sermons, lectures, college papers and correspondence, dating from 1944 to This collection reflects Hickman's personal evolution in thought from his early work in his college career to his life of ministry and study in worship. Publications, comprised of pamphlets, articles, and books, have been organized alphabetically by title and date from The publications primarily relate to questions of worship, funeral practices, marriage rituals, and communion in the church. Many of the publications authored by Hickman are also supplemented by the article manuscripts and drafts in Hickman s office files. Sermons have been arranged chronologically, dating from The multiple drafts and edits of these sermons reflects a mind open to new theories and continued growth. His sermons for Race Relations Sunday, dating from 1955 to 1964 demonstrate this pattern of personal growth as his philosophy changes from tacit acceptance of segregation to critical analysis and activism. In such cases where a sermon was later edited, the sermon has been categorized based on the latest date of edit, in keeping with Hickman s practice in his files. Where Hickman organized his sermons topically, that arrangement has been retained. Correspondence includes outgoing and incoming letters arranged chronologically from 1971 to 2006, retaining Hickman s original folder titles when applicable. His correspondence reveals Hickman's enduring relationships with scholars, interest in new studies in worship, and continued commitment throughout his retirement in assisting and supporting new scholars in their research. The folder entitled Hickman Letters 1996" includes a photograph of a woman and her parents at her ordination, dated 18 June 1996 and signed cld, presumably Cynthia L. Danals. The Christian Family Movement Correspondence, " folder also contains a photograph, likely of Paul and Selma Thompson and their family in Office files have been arranged alphabetically retaining Hickman s original titles when applicable. This series, dating from 1944 to 2005 is comprised of Hickman s article manuscripts, lectures, collected prayers, personal college papers and records. The folder, Hickman College Records, " contains a photograph of his graduating class at Haverford in This series also includes the planning notes, course syllabi, class handouts, and graded student papers from courses he taught as a visiting professor at Vanderbilt University and Drew Theological School.
