Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?" When Jesus asked his diciples what their opinion of him was he first asked them what they heard from others. When he received an answer he then asked them what they thought about him, i.e. what is your personal opinion of me. Peter responded that he regarded Jesus and Christ, Son of the Living God. Jesus then reminded Peter and the others that this answer did NOT come from their own but was given to them by the Father. He declared them blessed, not because they were quick on their feet, or that gave the right answer based on their own brain work but because they received a word that became a souce of blessing for them. Pilate is confronted by the same sort of questioning in today s gospel. Jesus want to know what his own opinion of him is. Pilate responded with I m not a Jew meaning I don t have the background necessary to respond to your question. (Peter had the right categories and so could approach a proper answer). Jesus then goes on to speak of his kingdom to which Pilate assumes that he is a king (of sorts). This conversation continues and provides for the reader a great deal of material for reflection. For our purposes what we have covered allows us to ask ourselves whether our response to Jesus is based on what others have told us or whether we have approximated something from our own experience and then had that approximation confirmed and expanded by God, in other words, whether our response is inspired by lives lived in fidelity to the words and actions of Jesus as his followers and in response to the guidance provided by the Spirit he has given us so that we might indeed worthip the Father in spirit and in truth. It is true that faith comes by hearing as the Apostle reminds us but the Fathers of the Church were also fond of using the phrase the ears of the heart. By that they meant listening to the voice of the Spirit as it instructs us and guides us in the way we should go. Listening to the words of others, especially those designated by Christ as teachers and preachers is part of the process but once we have listened to them we are to internalize what they have said and put into practice the words and actions of Christ himself. This is what it means to declare Christ as King. If he is not king of our hearts then he is king of nothing. We would simply be like Pilate going around and around in circles with questions and answers trying to best Jesus at every turn. Pilate finally asked what is truth. How sad since he had the Way, the Truth and the Life right in front of him. Even sadder when we consider how close the Lord is to us, or wishes to be to us, and because we are not listening and hearing we cannot possible give the answer to the questions he places before us, the main one being is whether or not we want abundant life!

2 ~The Feast of Christ the King~ "That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in Heaven, on earth and under the earth: And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father." Philippians 2:10-11 Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heavenly anthem drowns, all music but its own; Awake my soul and sing, of Him who died for Thee, And hail Him as Thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o "!er the grave; And rose victorious in the strife, for those He came to save; His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring and lives that death may die. Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side; Rich wounds yet visible above, in beauty glorified; All hail Redeemer hail, for Thou hast died for me,thy praise shall never, never fail, throughout eternity. Christ Himself speaks of His Own kingly authority [see link for Bible Citations]: in His last discourse, speaking of the rewards and punishments that will be the eternal lot of the just and the damned; in His reply to the Roman magistrate, who asked Him publicly whether He were a king or not; after His resurrection, when giving to His Apostles the mission of teaching and Baptizing all nations, He took the opportunity to call Himself king, confirming the title publicly, and solemnly proclaimed that all power was given Him in Heaven and on earth. These words can only be taken to indicate the greatness of his power, the infinite extent of His kingdom. What wonder, then, that He Whom St. John calls the "prince of the kings of the earth" appears in the Apostle's vision of the future as He Who "hath on His garment and on His thigh written 'King of kings and Lord of lords!'." It is Christ Whom the Father "hath appointed heir of all things"; "for He must reign until at the end of the world He hath put all his enemies under the feet of God and the Father." It was surely right, then, in view of the common teaching of the sacred books, that the Catholic Church, which is the kingdom of Christ on earth, destined to be spread among all men and all nations, should with every token of veneration salute her Author and Founder in her annual liturgy as King and Lord, and as King of Kings. And, in fact, she used these titles, giving expression with wonderful variety of language to one and the same concept, both in ancient psalmody and in the Sacramentaries.

3 "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" is an 1868 hymn with lyrics written by Henry Baker, based on the Welsh version of Psalm 23 and the work of Edmund Prys. Obvious from its title, this hymn plays upon the metaphor of Jesus as a shepherd leading his followers from evil and despair towards salvation. Find the lyrics and story of this wonderful hymn below! 1 The King of love my shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never. I nothing lack if I am his, and he is mine forever. 2 Where streams of living water flow, my ransomed soul he leadeth; and where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth. 3 Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me; and on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me. The Story Behind The King of Love My Shepherd Is Sir Henry Williams Baker ( ), the author of this hymn, was the son of a vice-admiral. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained in 1844 as a priest in the Church of England. A big passion of his life was the creation of the innovative Hymns Ancient & Modern, an impressive achievement in the history of English hymnody and a collection of the various glorious gospels of its time. An important feature of this hymnal was the printing of text and tune for each hymn on the same page, so any singer could see and sing the unique pairings. The King of Love My Shepherd Is, a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, was written by Baker for the Second Edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1868, and included in the appendix. His friend John Bacchus Dykes, a musical editor on the committee, wrote the tune specifically for it, which is the title of Psalm 23 in the Latin translation. 4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill, with thee, dear Lord, beside me; thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me. 5 Thou spreadst a table in my sight; thy unction grace bestoweth; and oh, what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth! 6 And so through all the length of days, thy goodness faileth never; Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house forever.

4 Pope Francis tells how to bring about Christ's kingdom In the twilight of life we will be judged on our love for, closeness to and tenderness towards our brothers and sisters, the Pope said Sunday to myriad people in St. Peter s Square. If we truly love them, we will be willing to share with them what is most precious to us, Jesus himself and his Gospel. Jesus is not a King according to earthly ways, the Holy Father said. Rather, his reign is not to command, but to obey the Father, to give himself over to the Father, so that his plan of love and salvation may be brought to fulfillment. Salvation does not begin with confessing Christ s sovereignty, the Pope said, but with the imitation of Jesus works of mercy through which he brought about his kingdom. In so doing one opens his heart to God s charity. The Pope said Jesus brought about his kingdom... through his closeness and tenderness towards us. May we not allow ourselves to be distracted by other earthly and fleeting interests, he said, concluding his homily: And may Mary, our Mother and Queen of all Saints, guide us on the way to the kingdom of heaven.

FRANCIS (ATTICA) DEC. 13 ST. BONIFACE DEC. 13-ST. JOSEPH (COVINGTON) DEC. 17-ST. LAWRENCE On this last Sunday of Ordinary Time for the liturgical year, we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. This feast was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, at a time when the world was experiencing a rise of secularism, materialism and individualism, and an increasing denial of Christ s existence and authority. The hope was that the establishment of this feast would accomplish three goals that nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, that leaders and nations would see that they are required to give respect to Christ, the King of kings, and that the faithful would be strengthened and encouraged by the reminder that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills and bodies. ADVENT EVENINGS WITH BISHOP BAR- RON DECEMBER 7 GOD & FAITH DECEMBER 14 JESUS CHRIST DECEMBER 21-HOLY SPIRIT AND PRAY- ER GATHER AT 5PM IN MEMORIAL HALL WITH A LIGHT SUPPER PROVIDED, LIS- TEN TO A BRIEF PRESENTATION AND CONCLUDE WITH ADVENT VESPERS IN THE CHURCH This feast is needed more than ever for all people and for us especially, as Christian stewards. It reminds us of three vital truths. First, even when it seems the world is spinning out of control, we need not fear because we have a King of kings who is very much in charge and who is loving, merciful and just. Second, if Christ is king of all, then He is also king of me, personally. I am not lord of my time, talents, and treasure. He is. I am a servant of the King and a steward of His gifts to me. Third, as His disciple, I am called to imitate my King. Christ s kingship is characterized by humble service, by emptying Himself for the good of others, The Scriptures tell us He went about doing good and He says of Himself, I came not to be served but to serve. How can I live in any other way than as a humble servant like my King?
