1 SJPS PARENT NEWSLETTER December 9, 2018 Volume 2, Issue 10 Sunday (December 9, 2018) Scripture: Luke 3: 1-6 Second Sunday of Advent REFLECTION John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord in his first coming in history. He proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. His times might have been similar to ours. He met a world which did not live up to God's plan. There was political unrest with extremist groups. Criminality was rampant as we learn from the parable of the Good Samaritan or from two criminals crucified with Jesus. Family life was far from ideal. We can only surmise that he must have said, things must change, life cannot go on like this, it will ruin the country, it will destroy the moral fiber of our people. Each one of us is called to do our bit in preparing the way of the Lord to come a second time. We want a new way of life. Advent helps us to keep our eyes directed toward this. We prepare the way of the Lord. We have to know clearly where the road is and where it will be leading. We were told to make his path straight. Every valley has to be filled in, every mountain laid low. Rough roads have to be made smooth. Advent is not only the time to repent for our sinfulness before God. It makes us reflect on what needs conversion in us, what causes some people to be turned off by us. 3 Marian Glossary Our Special Intentions IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: The dogma proclaimed in Christian Tradition and defined in 1854, that from the first moment of her conception, Mary-- by the singular grace of God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ--was preserved immune from original sin. MAGNIFICAT: The title commonly given to the Latin text and vernacular translation of the Canticle (or Song) of Mary that she recites at the time of the visitation. The canticle begins with My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. MARY: The mother of Jesus. Because she is the mother of Jesus- -Son of God and second Person of the Blessed Trinity--according to the flesh, she is rightly called the Mother of God (Theotokos). Mary is also called "full of grace," and "Mother of the Church," and in Christian prayer and devotion, "Our Lady," the "Blessed Virgin Mary," and the "New Eve." We pray for Our La Salette community.
