Dominic Briese, O.P. Parish Novena beginning next weekend, at St. Bernard Church Oct. 16 th -24 th. Fr. Dominic has been with the Order of Preachers for over 20 years, serving as both director of Campus Ministries and as a pastor in a variety of dioceses throughout the western states. His work with the church community, college and young people, and his own battles with illness enable him to present a positive and healing message to more fully embrace the faith. 4 What is the project? ST. BERNARD CHUCH, EUREKA, CALIFORNIA 125 th ANNIVERSARY REMODELING PROJECT We are in the second phase of the renewal and upgrade of parish buildings and properties. St. Bernard Church interior was last remodeled twenty-five years ago for our centennial in Five years ago we remodeled St. Joseph Church inside and out with painting, re-wiring, and installation of a new heating system. Also, at St. Bernard Church we repaved the parking lot, made the rectory wheelchair accessible, painted the exterior of the church, refurbished and refitted the stained glass windows, and installed a new heating system. Other projects included fire safety and security alarm systems in both churches and the rectory. Both churches now have automatic doors at the side entrances for wheelchairs. Last year parishioners were asked if they wanted to proceed with the present phase which would complete the exterior work on St. Bernard Church in addition to remodeling the interior in anticipation of the 125 th anniversary of the building in The response was an overwhelming Yes. How much has it cost so far? Where did we get the money? During the past seven years we have spent in excess of $400,000 on capital projects. About sixty per cent of this came from bequests parishioners who left money or property to the Parish in their will. Another $50,000 was given in grants from foundations and the Catholic Extension Society. Some parishioners have made extraordinary gifts for a list of some of these see the Annual Report distributed to the parish Oct 1 and 2 at weekend Masses. Fundraisers and special events added another $25,000. The remainder, about $100,000, has come from the regular donations to the ongoing Gallon-by-Gallon Fund (the gold envelopes that parishioners receive each month). How much will it cost to finish the work at St. Bernard Church? Estimates cannot be exact because it depends on how the work is done. When work is multitasked it proceeds faster and at less cost because contractors can coordinate their efforts and work in tandem. If we do not have the financing in place, then the projects must be done one-by-one pay-as-you-go basis. Either way, we expect the remaining portion to be in excess of $275,000. Parishioners already have come forward offering to fund particular projects over $75,000 in future gifts has been pledged and a bequest of $35,000 for parish renovation has been recently received. We need to raise the remaining $175,000 in the next year to complete the church for a 125 th anniversary celebration in 2011.

5 What work remains to be done at St. Bernard Church? The biggest remaining projects are relining the redwood gutters along the roof lines to protect the newly renovated stained glass windows ($6,000); refinishing all the pews and installing new, quiet kneelers ($40,000); a fire prevention sprinkler system ($45,000 is on hand, we need another $45,000 to fully protect the church); eight new hanging lamps in the nave ($12,000), and, the biggest part, preparation and painting the upper walls, trusswork, and ceilings ($45,000) which will require rental of either expensive scaffolding or lifts (an additional $25,000 to $45,000). Parts that already have been pledged include: Decorative panels above the upper walls ($6,000), new carpet and vinyl flooring ($60,000-$75,000), refurbishing and automation of the tower bell ($10,000) and wrought iron railings and handrails ($4,000). How will we pay for our share of the remainder? We will pay the way we have paid in the past: Through the generosity and sacrificial giving of our parishioners. Many persons who are using parish envelopes continue to contribute regularly to the Gallon-by-Gallon campaign. This has kept the work moving forward steadily, if slowly the new side aisle lighting, and the painting of the choir, lower walls and altar area have been made possible because of these ongoing contributions. If we re to be finished in a year, we need both to continue the Gallon-by-Gallon giving but also we need additional moneys to accelerate the pace of work so to finish in time for an anniversary celebration next summer. Here are some additional ways of giving you may wish to consider: A one-time contribution to fund a particular feature or element. A donation of stock, real estate or other gift that can be converted to cash (this may be especially attractive to persons wishing to reduce their tax liability). A special monthly pledge for six, twelve or however many months you wish. These monthly gifts can be paid by check, cash, direct withdrawal from your bank account, or by credit card. Many parishioners now make all their contributions by bank transfer or credit card it s an easy and reliable way of giving. See the accompanying special donation form for ways you can set up your donation. You may want to make much or all of your gift by December 31 to enjoy the fullest tax benefit for this year. Please take these materials home with you and study them. If you have any questions, ask a member of the Parish Finance Council. If you do not know who they are, call the Parish office and ask to have a member contact you. We will have our beautiful and historic church ready for its 125 th birthday only with your help.
