4 Page 3 Thanksgiving From Fr. Jamie: In this season of Thanksgiving I give thanks especially for the dedication and support of all the people of St. Clement s. I give thanks for all the saints in this place. There is so much great work done in this modest, beautiful place. I also give thank also for the ones who came before whose work we, in so many ways, continue, the saints of the past who have given so much and have moved along either to glory or to new challenges and new opportunities. Above all, I give thanks to Jesus Christ in whose name all of this is done and by whose power all is accomplished. J+ Thanksgiving Baskets: Our fall Outreach drive You will be seeing envelopes to make donations to MUST ministries for the annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive. Please give as you are able and pray for the families in this community who are in need of our support. A Litany of Thanksgiving Let us give thanks to God our Father for all his gifts so freely bestowed upon us. For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth and sky and sea. For all that is gracious in the lives of men and women, revealing the image of Christ, For our daily food and drink, our homes and families, and our friends, For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, Thanksgiving Week Sunday, November 18 The 26th Sunday After Pentecost Regular Sunday Schedule Changes to regular schedule -No Tuesday Bible Study -No Wednesday Morning Prayer -No Wednesday Evening Holy Eucharist For health and strength to work, and leisure to rest and play, For the brave and courageous, who are patient in suffering and faithful in adversity, For all valiant seekers after truth, liberty, and justice, For the communion of saints, in all times and places, Above all, we give you thanks for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord; To him be praise and glory, with you, O Father, and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. -The Book of Common Prayer, p. 837
5 Salvation is a word for the divine spaciousness that comes to human beings in all the tight places where their lives are at risk, regardless of how they got there or whether they know God's name. Sometimes it comes as an extended human hand and sometimes as a bolt from the blue, but either way it opens a door in what looked for all the world like a wall. This is the way of life, and God alone knows how it works. - Barbara Brown Taylor Sabbath Thinking Page 4 The Sabbath is a day for the sake of life. -Abraham Heschel The Unity of the Saints The communion of saints is everybody in the Church, the living and the dead and those to come. This makes the Holy Eucharist the veritable feast of rich food Isaiah speaks of which God has made for all people and by which death itself is destroyed. We gather on Sunday mornings to be glad and rejoice in his salvation. The destruction of death ends all separation between the living and the dead in God. This is not immediately apparent to us. The dead seem to have gone forever. Our human divisions seem to overwhelm any possible unity. Death seems to prevail throughout. The raising of Lazarus contradicts what seems apparent. At first, even the faithful are convinced of the finality of death. Enter, however, the love of Jesus (always right on time ). Few stories match the depth of Jesus love than in this story. In him is God dwelling among us, always listening to us, and always revealing his glory. It is the depth of this love which overcomes death and unbinds us from all its forms. Our hope is in this uniting love in the life we have after death, but also, for life we are given before death. Jamie+ Robert Wright, Bishop of Atlanta Activity From jail, John hoped his work would continue. His work was to reach people religion left behind. Through his cell bars he asked his friends, "Is Jesus the Messiah, or should I keep waiting?" Pay attention to how Jesus answered the question: "Tell John the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, good news is brought to the poor." Jesus could've given any answer but he pointed to activity. What is leadership anyway? Some think leadership is a special sauce: equal parts charisma, smarts and training. Jesus and John knew better: Leadership is activity, available to all. All. Jesus and John were lay people. Neither had any formal authority. Neither was a bishop, priest or deacon. But, both knew the good news. Both did the good news. You know the good news. Nothing more is necessary. Really! Now, do gospel activity. This For Faith originally appeared on December 13, 2013

8 Fr. Jamie s Notes on the Liturgy: The Proper Preface The Proper Preface is that part of the Holy Communion which comes right after the beginning dialogue called the sursum corda: Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise... Christian Education & Formation And then the Proper Preface offers some specific way to offer that thanks and praise. It changes with the season and sometimes with a specific Sunday or feast day or sacramental moment. Here is the place where the church s calendar is grafted into the prayer of the Eucharist itself. The Eucharist is both a prayer of thanksgiving and a prayer of remembrance and in the proper preface the two are distinctly linked. We give thanks because we can remember and we give thanks in our remembrance. God has acted in all and various ways. To remember each facet of his grace draws from us gratitude and hope to begin our prayer of thanksgiving. Tuesday Rector s Bible Study Tuesday, Bible Study will meet in August.. We will be studying the lectionary passages for the Sunday For all the readings, each Sunday, see the Lectionary Page Sunday School/ Grace Place: Back in September About Our Curriculum We use a curriculum which comes with colorful handouts for the kids and a teacher s guide with recommended activities and follows the gospel lesson we use in the service.
