BISHOP'S OFFICE PASTORAL CENTER 40 NORTH MAIN AVENUE, ALBANY, NEW YORK FAX (518) TELEPHONE (518) My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: The Diocese of Albany has always reached out with generous hearts and giving hands to the annual Black, Native American and Latin American collection. The missionary spirit of the People of God in each community and local church serves as a reminder that Christ is truly present where we gather. The Catechism of the Catholic Church beautifully teaches us that the Lord s mandate to make disciples of all nations is grounded in the eternal love of the Most Holy Trinity. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has asked all Catholics to renew the Missionary ministry of the Church. Let us continue in our Evangelization efforts to unite ourselves with others in the love of Christ with our support on this combined collection. For the past 50 years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops through its Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America has helped 25 countries in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean confront challenges to the faith. With your help and the support of the Catholic faithful, we have helped develop evangelization and catechetical programs. We have also funded activities that promote an encounter with Jesus Christ, so that the faithful can become missionary disciples. With your support, last year the Black and Indian Mission Office provided grants to 132 dioceses throughout the United States. Let your prayer be constant as together we join our hearts and hands, always serving these Christian communities in love and in imitation of Christ. Next weekend, March 4 th and 5 th, the combined Black, Native American, and Latin American Collections will be taken up in our diocese. I ask you to consider contributing to this Collection, and I am grateful for your generosity. Together let us ask the Lord to continue to bless us in all that we do. yours in Christ, Faithfully Edward B.
3 We ask your continued support in the Diocesan Collection on March 4 th and 5 th for the Black, Native American & Latin American Missions. Funds from this combined collection support projects and are used to help fund catechesis and evangelization programs throughout the United States and the Church of Latin America and the Caribbean. Your gifts will fund catechesis, pastoral programs, marriage and family life projects, seminarian education, and many other necessary programs. The Black and Native American Mission Office provides grants for projects throughout the Missions in North America including programs in the Diocese of Albany. By contributing to next week's collection you will provide seeds to grow the faith for years to come. Please support the Black and Native American Missions of the United States and the Church in Latin America. 4 Rice Bowls for Operation Rice Bowl For many years our parish has participated in the Operation Rice Bowl program. It helps American Catholics participate in the fasting and almsgiving dimensions of the Lenten seasons by eating one very modest meal each week and putting the cost of a regular meal in the Rice Bowl, which is returned to Church at the end of the Lenten season. These monies are then transmitted through foods and goods to those areas of the world where poverty is a major problem. During the next few weekends we will have the cardboard Rice Bowls on tables at the Church entrances. We invite you to take one for your household, and to return it at the end of the Lenten season. Ashes May Be Brought Home Family members of the sick, or of others confined to their homes, may bring the blessed ashes to them in their homes. The formulas found in the Missal may be used to impose the ashes. Any one who wishes to use this permission is asked to bring a suitable container in which we may put some ashes. Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Fasting for religious purposes is a practice of selfdiscipline that has been employed over the centuries as a means of spiritual growth. Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 12 th On Saturday, March 11 th, two weekends from now, be sure to set your clocks forward one hour. Mark your Calendar! Our Palm Sunday (April 9 th ) Breakfast is a popular and well attended fundraiser. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Academy. Sacrificial Giving Every opportunity to give generously is an opportunity to receive innumerable blessings. 5 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 26, 2017 SAT. 4 PM A.Drew F.Rees T.Snyder R. Kreig We still need more beds Lebanon Valley College Choir HOST FAMILIES NEEDED! On Saturday, April 1, the Lebanon Valley College Choir of Annville, PA, will be visiting to sing at our 4 pm Vigil Mass and to present a wonderful concert at 7:30 p.m. the same evening in our beautiful Church. It will be an evening to be remembered for a long time! Our parish is responsible for hosting these 56 college students for the evening of April 1. Host responsibilities are: 1) bring the students to your home after the concert on Saturday night 2) provide a place for them to sleep--a couch, pillow, and a blanket are perfectly acceptable 3) feed them breakfast in the morning 4) return them to the Church on Sunday morning 20 host homes, at least are needed. The Choir Director asks that hosts agree to take at least 2 students, with 3 or more even better, i.e. they discourage a host home taking only one student. Those who have hosted students in the past have found it to be a wonderful experience. We need to have the list of host homes finalized by March 1. If we do not have host families for these students, they will find hotel lodging; but this really stretches the budget thin for this wonderful ministry group. Please check your calendars and see if you are available to help with this request on Saturday, April 1 st. Snyder Shannon Wingert Reflections on today s Scriptures Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? No, indeed we can t. But evidence does suggest that worrying can subtract time from our life span! Clearly, we are not meant to worry. It s not healthy and it s not useful. But for many of us, it s quite difficult not to be anxious and concerned about matters that are important to us. So what is the secret to letting go of this unnecessary anxiety? Jesus gives us an answer in today s Gospel. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. In other words, our focus should be on being faithful followers of God. When we put our trust in the providence of the One who clothes the grass of the field, and stop trying to rely on our own (meager) powers, then things will be taken care of: Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Part of the secret here, of course, is coming to accept God s will for us, even when it doesn't perfectly match what we may have been envisioning. There is a kind of surrender involved that puts God s plan first. Instead of getting worked up that things aren't going our way, this kind of reliance upon God enables us to relax and accept the way things are going. The great spiritual writer, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, put in well in his work, Abandonment to Divine Providence, when he said, To escape the distress caused by regret for the past or fear about the future, this is the rule to follow: leave the past to the infinite mercy of God, the future to His good Providence, give the present wholly to His love by being faithful to His grace. God takes care of the birds, the flowers, even the grass! He will also take care of us. Gina Loehr LENT.Will it be easy? Nope Will it be worth it? Absolutely!
