2 A Many Faceted Priest A - Fr Diago Pereira fter chatting with Fr Diago (our new resident priest) for more than an hour, I came away wondering - How can one person, that too a priest, be a Pastor, Principal, Manager/Trustee, Singer, Music composer, Actor, Tabla/Sitar/Harmonium player, Screenplay writer, Director, Voracious reader (he has a collection of over 1500 books on various topics), Bharat Natyam /Yoga exponent, etc.? To use the catch phrase of the famous humorist P G Wodehouse The mind boggles!!! was also the Dean of the Raigad Missions and was based at Korlai. He trained in Indian Classical Music under Mst. Vinayak B Patwardhan at the Gandharv Mahavidyalaya for his Visharad, which is equivalent to a college degree. He has composed, sung and recorded 5 Marathi Bhaktigeet albums, most of which are sung in the churches of our Archdiocese. Fr Diago was born in Nandakal, Bassein (Vasai) in 1945, into a family of 10 siblings, he being the eldest. One of his sisters is a Mother General in Austria and his youngest sibling Fr Thomas is a missionary in Mizoram. He has served in various capacities as Parish priest, Asst. Parish priest, Manager/Trustee in various parishes at Merces, Chulne, Goregaon East, Agashi, Bandra, Vikhroli, Vile Parle, Colaba and Worli. He P.S. Fr Diago s room has a 4 foot wooden cross placed at an angle on the wall with a risen Christ at the head of the Cross and a small plaque stating with the grace of God I can carry any Cross ( burden ). Very inspiring! Finally, Fr Diago had this message for the Assumption Family Always keep yourselves in God s hands, trust Him with all your heart. Everyone is unique and good in their own way. 3 As we gear up for our feast dear Assumption family, let us look to Mary our Mother who had a very positive attitude to the plan of God. She gave in to the will of God very positively. She accepted not with a half-hearted YES but in totality. She was given the privilege of being taken body and soul to heaven being a woman who was preserved from original sin. Her positive attitude towards God s plan even at the foot of the cross was exemplary. Like Mary may we also surrender to God s will positively A story worth sharing... A 4 year old boy was in the market with his 6 year old sister Suddenly the boy found that his sister was lagging behind. He stopped and looked back. His sister was standing in front of a toy shop and was watching something with great interest. The boy went back to her and asked, Do you want something? The sister pointed at the doll. The boy held her hand and like a responsible elder brother, gave that doll to her. The sister was very happy The shopkeeper was watching everything and getting amused to see the matured behaviour of the boy Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, What is the cost of this doll, Sir! The shopkeeper was a cool man and had experienced the odds of life. So he asked the boy with a lot of love n affection, Well, What can you pay? The boy took out all the shells that he had collected from sea shore, from his pocket and gave them to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper took the shells and started counting as if he were counting currency. Then he looked at the boy. The boy asked him worriedly, Is it less? The shopkeeper said, No, No These are more than the cost. So I will return the remaining. Saying so, he kept only 4 shells with him and returned the remaining. The boy, very happily kept those shells back in his pocket and went away with his sister A worker in that shop got very surprised watching all these. He asked his master, Sir! You gave away such a costly doll just for 4 shells??? The shopkeeper said with a smile, Well, for us these are mere shells. But for that boy, these shells are very precious. And at this age he does not understand what money is, but when he will grow up, he definitely will. And when he would remember that he purchased a doll with the Shells instead of Money, he will remember me and think that world is full of good people. He will develop positive thinking.. Please do come and join in the community singing practice for all people. 4) The Preachers are Redemptorist Fathers who will be preaching on the general Theme " THE FAMILY IN TODAY'S WORLD". The specific theme for the day is mentioned above. 5) There will be only one MERGED choir and no separate language choir that will sing for the novena mass on all the nine days. 6) Please continue to drop your cash offerings for the Poor and Needy of our parish at the offertory hymn in the designated boxes in the church by coming forward at the time of the offertory. 7) The cash collected during the 9 days will be deposited in the Poor and Needy account of our parish and will be used to supply the ration of food grains and essential requirements that will be distributed throughout the year. 8) After the childrens' mass on Sundays 7th and 14th Aug, there will be the showering of flowers. The Assumption Family is invited to take part in the festivities as we meet and greet one another. Commitment Prayer Service for the Confirmandi of our Parish The seven sacraments are channels of grace from God. They are administered during the different stages of human life and give healing and strength to enable each of us to fulfill God s divine will. The first is Baptism, wherein our parents and godparents introduced us to the Christian faith and we were freed from original sin to become temples of the Holy Spirit. With the Sacrament of Eucharist or Holy Communion, we became worthy to receive the body and blood of Christ, which is food for our spiritual nourishment. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the Christian initiation that begun at Baptism, making us spiritually adult. Through this sacrament, we receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which empower us to live more Christ-like lives and help us defend the faith against opposition. June 26, 2016 was an important day in the lives of 48 confirmandi of our parish, who were initiated into Christ, through a spiritually reviving Commitment Prayer Service, conducted by Fr. Byron and the catechists. The parents and godparents too were part of this service, sharing in the joy of their wards Christian initiation. The service began with a beautiful hymn, followed by Fr. Byron welcoming the parents, godparents, and candidates. Fr. Byron introduced the catechists, who would prepare the confirmandi to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation scheduled to be held on Feb 19, The candidates were then asked to recall the sacrament of Baptism, with their parents pouring water over their hands, saying, [Child s name], recall your Baptism and embrace the gift of faith, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, while the confirmandi replied, Amen. Fr. Byron then asked the candidates if they wanted to grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and be active disciples of the Church, to which they answered, Yes, I do. This was followed by the candidates mindfully committing to the faith, with the priest, their parents, and their godparents signing their forehead and other senses. Joseph Fu then discussed the calendar of events during the year in preparation for Confirmation, the dates of the retreat, the attendance policy, and the obligation to 20 hours of community service. Finally, Rev Fr. Dom, our parish priest, addressed the gathering and emphasized on the spiritual support of the candidate by their parents, through family prayer and reflection within the home on the Word of God. The service ended with a solemn blessing by Fr. Dom. - Ms. Francin Pinto 5

6 Induction of The PCOA The 26th of June was celebrated as Laity Sunday in our Archdiocese. The newly elected PPC and PCOA members were formally inducted at the parish mass which was celebrated by Fr Diago Pereira. During his homily, Fr. Diago appreciated the efforts of all God s people who contribute in some way to the functioning of the parish. He however made a clarion call to all those who have yet not come forward and hoped they would discern their responsibility and contribute to the functioning of the parish. After the homily Lydia Carvalho (Outgoing Steering Committee Head) read the names of all the PPC coordinators and PCOA members. Fr. Diago invited all the other parishioners to raise their right hands along with him in prayer, as a sign of blessing these members to be able to fully contribute to the welfare of the parish. After the mass the PCOA had its first meeting where Fr. Dom was present. After a short prayer and blessing he left while the PCOA conducted the agenda for the day. The outgoing Vice President Joylan conducted the meeting under the guidance of Selwyn Miranda from the PPC and the Election Committee. Elections were held for new office bearers in the PCOA and to represent at the PPC. Nirmala Sequeira was unanimously elected Vice President and Genevieve D souza was elected Secretary of the PCOA. Two other members namely Ronald dsouza and Stanny Dsouza were elected. These elected members will represent the PCOA at the Parish Pastoral Council. - Joe Kuriakose Night Vigil Divine Light Prayer Group Lam 2:19a "Arise, cry aloud in the night At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord. On the 11th of June, we had a Night Vigil conducted in our church that was attended by parishioners from 11 different parishes from Goregaon to Mira Road. Around 115 people came to spend a night with the Lord in prayer. The Night Vigil began at 10:30 pm -- entering into the Lord s presence in a time of Praise and Worship. We then had the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament which was followed by coming before the Lord in a time of surrender. Later, we spent time in silence asking the Lord to reveal to us the different needs that he wanted us to pray for. Groups of 3 were formed to pray for all these different intentions. People were assigned time slots to pray for the various needs pertaining to the church, our city, our country, and the entire world. The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Fr. Melroy which was followed by a tea break. We then prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 am and continued to intercede till 5 am. - Aaron Colaco. Have a Camera? Love to click pix? 7 A visit to the Clergy Home Couples have problems on their bed, and the file lands on my bed! This quip by Fr Bernard Rodricks was one of the many that sent us all into peals of laughter when the Media Team recently visited the retired priests at the Clergy Home, Bandra. Fr Bernard used to be the secretary to the Cardinal and handled problematic marriage cases; and even though he is now retired and keeping unwell, he continues to handle problematic marriage cases. His humorous take on the various causes of problems couples face, and of course his comments on the couples he sees at Bandstand, was an absolute treat, though the facts are very very disturbing, considering the effect broken marriages have on the kids. Fr Kenneth Mendes, originally from our parish, kept recounting incidents of his childhood days spent roaming the fields in Kandivli village, taking baths in the five wells, the ponds and the river flowing adjacent to our church, and catching fish and turtles (kaasav) from the pond. It was a real pleasure to chat with Fr Benny Aguiar, former long-time editor of The Examiner, a very learned man and author of many books, the latest being, The Making of Mumbai - A History of the Metropolis and its Catholic Past, which is already into its second printing. Each of the other priests as well warmly welcomed us and had lots of tales, anecdotes, funny/sad incidents, etc. to recount during their tenure in various parishes. Right before we left the home, we had the pleasure of meeting Fr T O Jacob, who was our Assistant Parish Priest in the early 90s. It was amazing to note how, even though age may have taken a toll on the health of these priests, their memories are as sharp as ever. In fact, after I introduced myself to Fr Jabob, he remarked, You were the editor of the Patrika during my tenure This was some 20 odd years ago, and I was simply amazed at his recollection. We had carried a few food items along with us. The Sister in charge had said that Red Label tea, Quaker ats, and samosas for tea would be most appreciated, and for certain the latter at least seemed to have been a good choice, considering how the priests eyes lit up when we made a mention of them. It was a Sunday afternoon well spent, and we hope we d made the day for the priests, like they had ours. We can be sure of their prayers and blessings. - Harold Mendes Catechism Being the first day of Catechism it wasn't certain that many would come, but it was wonderful to see a lot of children and the catechists all geared up to welcome the new year. The message in the sermon reinforced our desire to be humble, thus building a place in our hearts for God. After mass the children and the catechists gathered in the hall to begin the new academic year with a prayer, to inspire the children to be better students and catechists to be better teachers. We were led in prayer and symbolism was the theme of the day. The Lotus was presented to us to inspire purity of body, mind, and spirit and the Sun to symbolize the source of light. The children then went to their respective classes and began their catechism with renewed gusto. Here's wishing them, the catechists, and the parishioners a committed and spiritual beginning this new year. - Stella Lucas 7

8 Community Updates Community No 1 - Sts. Peter & Paul Co-ordinator - Selwyn Miranda Celebrating the feast of Saints Peter and Paul The traditional celebration of the feast of the Community patron Saints, Peter and Paul was held on Wednesday, 29th June. It commenced with a thanksgiving Mass at 7pm in the church followed by a get together in the Assumption Hall. Over a hundred members of the community attended the Mass and celebrations. The community was happy to have Fr Dominic, Fr Byron, and Fr Diago in their midst during the celebrations. The celebrations in the Hall commenced with a welcome to all the guests assembled for the function. An Initiation ceremony for one First Holy Communion and three Confirmation candidates of the community was held thereafter. The candidates, together with their parents, took part in the ceremony conducted by Fatima Rodriques and Ursula Miranda. After this ceremony, our coordinator specifically welcomed the family of Mr and Mrs Kamlesh Rathod, who have recently come to reside in our community. Fr Dominic then addressed the community and blessed its members. Four students of the community, namely, Sruthi, Tara, Melinda and Dylan who had passed the SSC Board exams this year, all securing high percentage marks, were congratulated and Fr Byron presented them with gifts on behalf of the community in appreciation of their meritorious performance. The function continued thereafter with the Youth of the community taking over the entertainment part of the program. There were games, music and dancing organized by the youth for the entertainment of all. The celebrations ended with a Community Dinner. Juventus and Nicolette, both members of our community, jointly compered the function and kept the members entertained with their innovative dialogues and jokes. Community No 16 - Don Bosco Co-ordinator - Iris D Souza Send Forth Thy Spirit We began the new academic year with a special prayer service conducted for all our confirmation children. The prayer service was held at the residence of our coordinator, Mrs Iris D souza on 24th June Our community has five children receiving confirmation this year, who attended the service along with their parents. It was heartening to see the parents showering their blessing on their children. - Selwyn Miranda We also had some of our animators being a part of the service. Thereafter, snacks were served to all. We also had a souvenir distributed to all the children receiving confirmation. On behalf of the community I take this opportunity to thank our coordinator for conducting this service. - Isabella Fernandes Community No 21 - Sacred Heart of Jesus Co-ordinator - Sheila Mathias Share yours joys and see them multiply On the following Sunday of the feast of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, our community decided to distribute cake to the Assumption family after the evening mass. Many sponsors and volunteers came forward willingly to make this small gesture a success. The evening was made memorable as most of the community members interacted with Fr Byron, they were filled with joy and enthusiasm at the end, as they were able to spread the love that comes from the heart of Jesus to the entire Assumption Family. Our community members are grateful to the newly elected coordinator and Animators, and wish them all the best in their endeavours. - Severine Pinto 8

9 St Augustine Born: November 13, 354 Died: August 28, 430 (Feast Day) Patron Saint of: brewers, theologians, printers, sore eyes, Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Diocese of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Diocese of Superior, Wisconsin; Diocese of Tucson, Arizon St. Augustine was born at Tagaste (modern Algeria) in Africa. His father, a pagan was converted on his death bed; his mother was Saint Monica, a devout Christian. He received a Christian upbringing and in 370 went to the University at Carthage to study rhetoric with a view to becoming a lawyer. He gave up law to devote himself to literary pursuits and gradually abandoned his Christian faith, taking a mistress with whom he lived fifteen years and who bore him a son, Adeodatus, in 372. After investigating and experimenting with several philosophies, he became a Manichaean for several years; it taught of a great struggle between good and evil, and featured a lax moral code. A summation of his thinking at the time comes from his Confessions: "God, give me chastity and continence - but not just now." In 384, he accepted the chair of rhetoric at Milan, and of his tutor, Simplicianus, he returned to his Christian faith and was baptized on Easter Eve 387. On the death of his mother he returned to Africa, sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and founded a sort of monastery at Tagaste. He was ordained in 390 and moved to Hippo where he established a community with several of his friends who had followed him. Five years later he was consecrated Bishop and made coadjutor to Valerius, Bishop of Hippo, whom he succeeded in the following year. Augustine became the dominant figure in African Church affairs and was the leader in the bitter fights against Manichaeism, Donatism, Pelagianism and other heresies. Augustine's towering intellect molded the thought of Western Christianity to such an extent that his years after his death. He wrote profusely, expositing and defending the faith, and to this day many of his two hundred treatises, some three hundred sermons are of major import in theology and philosophy. Among his best best-known works are his Confessions; City of God, a magnificent exposition of a Christian philosophy of history; De Trinitate; De Doctrina Christiana; Enchiridion; and his treatises against the Manichaeans and the Pelagians. His later thinking can be summed up in a line from his writings: "Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you." Called Doctor of Grace, he is one of the greatest of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and with the possible exception of Thomas Aquinas, the greatest single intellect the Catholic Church has ever produced. - Compiled by Delphine Estibeiro The Finding of the Relics of St Stephen Feast: August 3 THE second festival in honour of the holy protomartyr St Stephen was instituted by the Church on the occasion of the discovery of his precious remains. His body lay long concealed, under the ruins of an old tomb, in a place twenty miles from Jerusalem, called Caphargamala, where stood a church which was served by a venerable priest named Lucian. In the year 415, on Friday, the 3rd December, about nine o'clock at night, Lucian was sleeping in his bed in the baptistery, where he commonly lay in order to guard the sacred vessels of the church. Being half awake, he saw a tall, comely old man of a venerable aspect, who approached him, and, calling him thrice by his name, bid him go to Jerusalem and tell Bishop John to come and open the tombs in which his remains and those of certain other servants of Christ lay, that through their means God might open to many the gates of His clemency. 10 Lucian went to Jerusalem and laid the whole affair before Bishop John, who bade him go and search for the relics, which, the Bishop concluded, would be found under a heap of small stones which lay in a field near his church.
