2 2 The Church of St. George Long Lake, Minnesota A Letter from the Pastor Dear Parishioners, A focus on the Catechesis on the Sacrament of Reconciliation becomes more important today in our troubled world, especially for those for whom the frequency of confession has been somewhat relaxed over the years. While many people frequent social and psychological counselors for remedies of a personal and relational nature, a holistic approach must also include the interior, spiritual life of the person before God, which only sacramental confession addresses. True and heart-felt confession of sins, with the declaration of absolution afterwards, clears the path of conflict and sin, and offers the faith-filled penitent recourse to a renewed life in discipleship with Christ in the context of His Church. It is a good time now to get reacquainted with this Sacrament of the Church by doing our part to make interior reflections, mindful of the ugly reality of sin and allow movements of the heart in sorrow for our personal sins. The denial of sin and its horrors have been a societal tragedy for too long. Watch the evening national and local news with any frequency and you see the drama of sin, the anguish of sinful acts towards others, and a total lack of regard for the existence of God who judges justly and to whom we must one day render an account of our behavior. He also renders mercy to the contrite who want to confess before Him and make a firm purpose of amendment to avoid the traps and snares of sin as much as humanly possible, aided by God s grace which is released to the penitent in the confessional every time. Many have already commented that the excellent construction and location of the new confessional, and how well it blends into its immediate surroundings, make it seem as if it s always been there! Centennial Corner Hello parishioners! I am excited to share what I have learned about the history of the Church of St. George. Please get in touch with me if you have any information or memories that would add to the story of our parish. My is mgflannnery1992@gmail.com and my phone number is Meg Flannery Day of the Dead: For the fourth year, St. George s Latino community is inviting everyone to join in their Day of the Dead celebrations with a dinner and performance by our Latino youth dance group, Alma Folklorica. This is a significant and joyful holiday for the Latino community, as it is a special way to come together and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed on. Day of the Dead is traditionally a Mexican holiday, but it is celebrated throughout Central and South America with a variety of local customs and traditions. Originally the holiday was based in Aztec beliefs and rituals, but it grew and adapted to the cultural and religious changes of Spanish Catholicism. Day of the Dead is observed from October 31-November 2 to align with the Catholic observances of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Traditionally, on November 1st, the lives of children who have passed are remembered and celebrated, while November 2nd honors the lives of deceased adults. During these days, families and communities come together to build altars either in their homes or in the cemeteries where loved ones are buried to honor and remember individuals who have died. Loved ones prepare the deceased s favorite foods and treats, as well as place special mementos and pictures of the deceased on the altars. These altars are meant as a way to guide the spirits back home to be with their loved ones for the holiday. WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. Call the office at (952) or us at stgeorge@msn.com if you would like more information about the parish or to register. The spacious rooms (allowing for wheelchairs) with stain glass windows and special religious artwork on the walls make it a very inviting space for the encounter of God s enduring mercy and love. Note that in the penitent s room the stain glass fixture represents the Sacrament of Penance with the keys entrusted to Peter that unlock/ lock sins and in the confessor s room the stain glass fixture represents the Sacrament of Holy Orders with the stole which is worn by the priest for every Sacrament administered. Individual times for confession will happen here in this new site henceforth, as posted in the frame outside the confessional door and also listed on the front cover of the parish bulletin. When communal penance services occur, usually during Advent and Lent, and when other guest priest confessors are present, other locations for the reception of the Sacrament within the church and in the parish office area will also be used. The confessional hours are effective immediately. Special aids and helps for making a worthy confession will be introduced soon through examination of conscience booklets and other printed materials for expanding our knowledge and preparation for receiving this Sacrament, not only in Advent and Lent, but throughout the year. May this new, sacred space - blessed by Archbishop Hebda during his recent visit to our parish - be a place to encounter the Fountain of love and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for all our parishioners and visitors during this Jubilee Year of Mercy and beyond. Fr. Mark Juettner Pastor Day of the Dead celebrations are meant to be fun and jubilant celebrations in which families and communities share the stories of their deceased loved ones and rejoice in their lives and memories. The mascots of the holiday are festive skeletons called catrinas. These playful skeletons are based on cartoons by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada who drew satirical cartoons of wealthy female skeletons to point out that death is the great equalizer and that not even the richest among us can cheat death. The decorative skulls and skeletons also represent the circle of life and our common mortality. These skeletons are meant to be as innocent and playful as other holiday mascots such as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and are not seen as scary or macabre. Day of the Dead is a grand celebration of life and remembrance of those we have lost, but hope to see again. As we become more involved with our Latino community here at St. George, we are invited to reflect, remember, and celebrate the lives of those who established and helped our small parish to grow as we continue our Centennial year. DAY OF THE DEAD DINNER! THIS WEEKEND! In the Community Center, 5pm after Saturday Mass Adults: $12 Children: $6 Please join our Latino community in celebrating the Day of the Dead with an evening of fabulous food and entertainment! To Brad Whitmore for designing and overseeing the construction of the new confessional and for donating so much of the labor himself. Our great gratitude to him for managing this major project so very well. To Michael DiPrima, the ninth grader who assisted Brad in the construction of the new confessional. To Michelle and Meghan Flannery who have worked many hours sharing their talents and energies to plan, publicize, and take pictures of our very special events all throughout this Centennial Year, as well as to beautify our spaces and tend to details both large and small, and to Camille Curtiss for her decorating advice. To Lori Scherer, for her beautiful floral arrangements and decorations in the sanctuary and in front of the new confessional. To the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard for their presence Sunday morning to escort both the visiting Statue of our Lady of Fatima and then the Archbishop into the sanctuary of the church for parish Mass and devotions and to the St. George Council of Knights of Columbus for the honor guard they provided for the procession of the statue from the church sanctuary to the outdoor shrine and to the awaiting van for departure. To Sunday morning choir and the Latino choir for excellent sacred songs for the Mass and for evening devotions, in English, Spanish and Latin! To Megan Bennett and the Latino community who organized a beautiful farewell Mass and potluck supper and entertainment for our beloved Maria Ines before her return trip to Uruguay.
