From the Editor The ecumenical role of St. Paul s Cathedral, especially in Anglican-Roman Catholic relations, has been at the forefront in recent months. In 2011, the Bishop of Qu Appelle and the Archbishop of Regina signed a Covenant committing the two dioceses to work and pray together, witnessing to the unity we already have and seeking the complete unity which still eludes us. Each year since then, we have held a joint prayer service with the two Bishops, alternating between the two Churches. St. Paul s hosted Solemn Evensong in 2012 and 2014, and this year Holy Rosary Cathedral was the venue for Vespers on Pentecost Sunday, where Bishop David Ashdown was the preacher. The two Cathedrals have exchanged delegations at their principal Sunday Eucharist; Deacon Winna Martin led a group from St. Paul s to Holy Rosary in Advent 2014 and Deacon Barry Wood and his wife Sheila brought a return delegation to St. Paul s in January for the Solemn Eucharist of our patronal festival, the Conversion of St. Paul. The preacher at that service was Dr. John Meehan, SJ, President of Campion College. Father Meehan is a member of ARCCIC - the Anglican-Roman Catholic Covenant Implementation Committee, of which I am Anglican co-chair. In April, I was privileged to spend three days in Rome, where I visited the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Anglican Centre in Rome and attended the Sunday Eucharist of an PAGE 2 English-speaking congregation which has a covenant, modelled on ours, with the Anglican Centre. It is good news that our Dean, Mike Sinclair, will be attending a leadership course at the Anglican Centre in Rome in September. Since as far back as 1978, our Cathedral has emphasized ecumenism at the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, on or about January 25, which falls in the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Most years, our preacher has been from another Christian Church Roman Catholic, Lutheran, United and Disciples of Christ among them. Of course, our ecumenical relations are not, and should not be, limited to special occasions. Volunteers from other denominations help out at our Feed my Sheep program. We are invited to the regular Prayer for Peace in the City gathering at noon on the last Wednesday of the month at Knox-Metropolitan United Church. We aim to develop more, grassroots, joint parish initiatives and outreach; indeed, this is an integral part of the Anglican-Roman Catholic Covenant. Finally, our worshipping community at St. Paul s Cathedral is ecumenical: we have always welcomed members from a number of faith traditions as well as Anglican. We learn from each other, as we pray together that Christ s Holy Catholic Church may indeed be truly one. (Canon) Michael Jackson

From the Dean s Desk Dear Friends, I m taking the opportunity in this Dean s Desk to call our attention to something very important. On May 31, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Canada s Residential Schools comes to an end. The importance of this commission cannot be understated, as it has given survivors of the residential schools and their descendants the opportunity to voice how they have been affected by their and our involvement in the schools. It has also given us the chance to listen. The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, has called for the Church to enter into a deliberate time of reflection, prayer, repentance and action between May 31 and National Aboriginal Day, June 21, called #22days. In this time, we are called to form new relationships with our Aboriginal brothers and sisters, and to join in life-giving initiatives that raise awareness and promote justice. To do so is to live into our baptismal promise to respect the dignity of every human being. In this vein, on the Wednesdays during #22days, we ll be gathering at 2 p.m. and ringing our bell at St. Paul s 1122 times: once for each of the Aboriginal women listed as missing and/or murdered in this country. This will take place on June 3, June 10, and June 17. We will be joining congregations from across the country in continuous ringing that will form an unbroken sound wave of prayerful solidarity, reaching from coast to coast. PAGE 4 We do this to stand in solidarity with the families of these women, to offer public witness to the reality of their disappearances and murders, and to express that our wish that the government launch a national inquiry into their deaths and disappearances. We do so because their lives matter, as do their deaths. You can be involved by: Ringing the bell. Being a bell-toll counter. Praying in the cathedral during these times. Helping us hand out information on the street as to what we re doing. Making a letter we re writing to MLAs, MPs and the Prime Minister asking for an inquiry, available to those on the street. Please join with us in this important initiative, which takes us further along the journey started by our time of Truth and Reconciliation Peace, (The Very Reverend) Mike Sinclair Dean and Rector All Saints, Katepwa Beach Summer Services until September 6 Another ministry of St. Paul s Cathedral is coordinating the seasonal services at All Saints, Katepwa Beach, from Victoria Day through the Labour Day weekends. Sunday service time is 9:30 a.m. Cathedral parishioners Mary-Elizabeth Leach and Hazel Dickson are churchwardens. Cathedral clergy Dean Mike Sinclair, Canon Michael Jackson, Deacon Winna Martin, the Rev. Cheryl Toth and the Rev. John Gardner are among those taking services, along with Archdeacon Malcolm French, the Rev. Don Wells, the Rev. Blair Dixon and Bishop Rob Hardwick. If you find yourself in the Qu Appelle Valley on a summer weekend, you are very welcome to attend. Historic All Saints Church is in a lovely setting at the east end of Lake Katepwa and the services are brief!!

PAGE 5 From the Churchwardens Dear Friends, Spring is finally here and summer is on the way. With summer come visitors from other parishes so let us make a special effort to make them feel welcome. This can be done in many ways. We can start by greeting and engaging in conversation people we have not met before. If you wear your new name tag you will be easily identified as a member of St Paul's. If you haven't received a name tag the sign up sheet is still on the table in the cloister. Linger a little while after the service and have coffee. Volunteer to make coffee and put out cookies for one or more Sundays during the summer. A sign up sheet will be out shortly. Bring flowers from your garden to brighten up the church, cloister and foyer, share produce from your garden with others. Have a great summer but don't forget to make St Paul's part of it. 6 News from Feed My Sheep Our outreach project continued service through the winter months, with average attendance of people. We have nticed numerous families attending always great to have youth in our midst! Both Souls Harbour and Marian Centre hosted special Easter meals, which we were happy to support with donations of groceries in lieu of serving our regular lunches. Coming up for summer we will serve lunch on the second and fourth Saturdays of June & July and then take our usual break for the month of August; we will resume serving on September 12. We have welcomed several new volunteers recently (thank you!!) but be assured there is always room for more, especially as we move into vacation mode. Also needed and most gratefully accepted are donations of non-perishable individually packaged items for the lunch bags granola bars, juice boxes, puddings, fruit cups, cheese & crackers, dry noodles, oatmeal packets, and toiletries. Bottled water is a huge need, again, especially in the heat of summer. Our home-made muffins, offered with coffee to start the morning, are a huge hit; overheard I just love the muffins the ladies of this church make. Gentlemen that sounds like a challenge!! All jokes aside, Feed My Sheep plays a huge role in the lives of those we serve. Please consider joining the flock together we are making a difference! Thanks be to God! Tannis Patterson, Coordinator (306) Building in Faith Report PAGE 6 The mandate of the Building in Faith Management Committee was to facilitate the construction of a new hall facility adjacent to the Cathedral and specific renovations to the Cathedral and Columbarium. Thus, with the project (almost) completed, the final meeting was held on January 7, 2015 and yes, there was a celebration! Vestry has now created the Building Management Committee. As the name implies, the duties are wide-ranging and include to manage payment of the mortgage...and to retire the mortgage as soon as reasonably possible. As you will have noticed, there was a significant ice damming issue above the north transept where the old building, the new hall and the cloister are connected. Unfortunately, the ice buildup led to water finding a path under the roof flashing, which resulted in some water damage in the cloister. Now that the roof is clear, the roofer will complete a full inspection of that area and any repairs, along with recaulking of joints, will be done. It has been determined that a permanent heat tape installation is required at this location to prevent the formation of an ice dam through our six months of winter. Over the summer, the heat grid will be installed and repairs to the interior finish in the cloister will be completed. From September 1, 2014, when we took out the mortgage, to April 30, 2015, we have made monthly payments totalling $55,556, of which $28,623 or 51.5% was interest. Since January 1, 2015, mortgage payments have exceeded donations to BIF by $1,386. However, we began the year with a bank balance and we have received the GST rebate on 2014 expenses. So on May 4, 2015, we were able to make a lump sum payment of $50,000 toward the Principal of the Open Variable part of the mortgage, reducing the loan at that date to $1,008,573. Together, we are making progress in handling our financial responsibilities as we use and enjoy the new facilities. We urge everyone to continue with their pledges and regular donations to Building in Faith. For more information, please contact Margaret Hammond. Margaret Hammond

PAGE 7 Images from Lent, Holy Week and Easter 2015 The Lent Service of Light marks the debut for our new boat-boy, Joel Sinclair (Dean Mike s son), and boat-girl, Saleena Jackson (Deacon Michael s granddaughter) both age 5. At the Service of Light, Bishop Hardwick blesses incense for the thurifer, Lena Bowen. Maundy Thursday: Bishop Rob Hardwick washes the feet of server Gareth Chevalier. Archdeacon Dell Bornowsky gives the homily at the Good Friday service.

PAGE 8 Easter Day: Deacon Michael explains to the Sunday School children the roles of thurifer Gillian and boat-girl Saleena, as Bishop Hardwick looks on. News of the Sunday School Slowly, but surely our Church School numbers are growing. In addition to welcoming new young people, we're very grateful to welcome parents who join us and in so doing support our children and our ministry. Our 'official' Church School program traditionally ends at Pentecost. This year Pentecost fell on Mary 24th, and the children (and their parents) celebrated the birthday of the church with a lesson, crafts, cake and lemonade. We will resume our regular Church School program on the Sunday after Labour Day. Our program over the summer months will be informal. The Church School room will be open and parents and children are welcome to use all books and materials. Thanks to Joanne Bonneville, our Church School space is beginning to develop a distinctly Anglican 'character'. Joanne has made two beautiful banners for our walls and several table coverings in colours appropriate to liturgical seasons. We continue to be blessed by gifted women who bring our ministry to life through their commitment and enthusiasm. Jackie Chase, Robin Sinclair. Hildy Bowen and her mother love what they do. Week after week, they strengthen one another by their joy in bringing the gifts of faith to the children of St. Paul's. We welcome anyone who would like to join us in this ministry. Gail Bowen Banners created for the Sunday School by Joanne Bonneville On Pentecost Sunday, the congregation thanked and blessed teachers Gail Bowen, Hildy Bowen, Robin Sinclair, and Jackie Chase.

PAGE 9 News of the Parish Bishop Rob Hardwick has named Canon Catherine Harper, Ministry Development Coordinator of the Diocese of Qu Appelle, as Associate Priest at the Cathedral. We look forward to seeing Canon Catherine more often in our community. St. Paul s Cathedral has taken over from All Saints Church responsibility for monthly Communion services at Wascana Hospital. Dean Mike Sinclair, Canon Michael Jackson and Deacon Winna Martin take turns in presiding, while Phyllis Ilsley, Merrilyn Dubreuil, Lionel Bonneville and Basil Pogue are among the volunteers who assist the residents in attending the service, on the third Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. in the hospital chapel. Deacon Winna also assists or presides at the weekly Friday morning Communion service at Qu Appelle House seniors residence and is responsible for the monthly service at the Renaissance. Bishop Duncan Wallace has completed another term as interim incumbent of St. Luke s Church, Regina, during which time he arranged joint Lenten Evensongs with the Cathedral and an Easter Vigil for Regina parishes at St. Luke s. The Rev. Michael Bruce of Winnipeg has been appointed incumbent of St. Luke s and begins his ministry there on August 1 st. Recently, reports Margaret Hammond, a small group of parishioners, many of whom can often be encountered in the 13th Avenue Safeway, collaborated in the promotion to collect stamps for Zwilling/Henckel knives. The result is that there is now a full set, including extra slicing and paring knives, to enhance our new kitchen and assist our great catering crew. Head server Madison Engen is growing a garden to provide vegetables for Feed My Sheep. This a science class community project at Luther College High School. Well done, Madison! Former parishioner David E. Smith was invested with the province s highest honour, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, on May 13. Congratulations, David! He and Gene Anne and grandson Ryder (a former server) are living in Niagara-on-the-Lake ON. As mentioned in From the Editor, Canon Michael Jackson had ecumenical meetings in Rome in April. In England, at a service of the Royal Victorian Order at St. George s Chapel, Windsor Castle, he met the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Princess Royal (Princess Anne), who, as Colonel-in-Chief of our regiment, the Royal Regina Rifles, attended services at St. Paul s in 1982 and He also read the lessons at Choral Mattins at the Queen s Chapel of the Savoy in London, and took a group of Canadians to Westminster Abbey for a behind-the-scenes briefing and tour. Congratulations to Graeme Henneberg, Jessica Mroske and Mark Mydelski on being confirmed by Bishop Hardwick on Pentecost Sunday, May 24. This followed a preparation course conducted by Dean Mike Sinclair, assisted by Bob Bray. It was the first confirmation at the Cathedral in a number of years. The Dean tells us they will have a new intake for confirmation class in the fall, so contact him if you are interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. We welcome Dave Hedlund, Rosemary Helliwell and Pat Henneberg as readers at our services. We are looking for more greeters and communion ministers at the 10:30 service and volunteers for all liturgical duties at the 9 a.m. service. Please contact Deacon Michael at dmichaeljackson@sasktel.net if you are interested. The lives of long-time active parishioners Laura Pogue and Muriel Blundell were celebrated by the congregation and reported in articles in Saskatchewan Anglican. They are both sorely missed. In April, the congregation paid tribute to Jim MacIntosh as he stepped down after 15 years as manager of the columbarium.

PAGE 11 Strawberry Fair 2015 This year s Strawberry Fair is, at this time of writing...ongoing! The Fair itself was held on May 2, with everything but the strawberries themselves. The ongoing and increasing drought in California meant that our berries would not be available when we had planned for them to be sold. With a few days to either soldier on, reconfigure, or scrap the whole thing, the decision was made to soldier on, trying to keep the momentum of the plans or the Strawberry Patch. The result showed that this was the best course of action. The combination of the book and treasure sale, silent auction with beautiful artwork, delicious welsh cakes, and the always wonderful berry patch was wildly successful, bringing in hundreds of people and approximately $13,000. The kids activity table saw the addition of Legos this year and we saw more kids come and stay longer than before. The other welcome addition was that of the Regina Junior Pipe Band, adding bagpipes and Scottish dancing to our mix. Strawberry Sales continued and we had every assurance that the berries would be here for Saturday, May 30. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our conveners Merrilyn Dubrueil, Catherine Arthur - MacDonald and Jason Antonio, and to everyone who helped make this strange year an enormous success. Elvira Beday

PAGE 12 Cathedral Vestments Vestments link us to the traditions of the early Church, symbolize the seasons of the liturgical year, and add colour to our worship. St. Paul s Cathedral is unusual among Anglican churches in this province, in that at most Eucharistic celebrations we have three ministers: priest, deacon, and a lay sub-deacon. The priest-celebrant wears a chasuble, the assisting deacon a dalmatic, and the sub-deacon a tunicle a garment also worn by the senior server or crucifer. Another vestment is the cope a cloak-like garment often worn by bishops but also by other ministers. And there are matching stoles rather like scarves, worn vertically around the neck by bishops and priests and cross-ways by deacons. In previous issues of The Epistle, we have featured Cathedral vestments: white (used for Christmas, Easter and some other major festivals, baptisms, marriages and funerals); red (for Pentecost, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, festivals of martyrs, ordinations and confirmations); and green (for the Sundays after Epiphany and after Pentecost ( Ordinary Time ). Until recently, we did not have a full set of purple vestments worn in Lent. However, thanks to the generosity of the Altar Guild, last year we commissioned purple vestments from our very own Merrilyn Dubrueil, seamstress extraordinaire. The purple set was completed this past Lent with a second tunicle for the senior server, donated by Gail Bowen, Michael Jackson, Basil Pogue and Trevor Powell. The next project is a second set of white vestments, which Merrilyn is currently working on. Our award-winning white set, created nearly 30 years ago by Saskatchewan artist Martha Cole, is showing signs of wear and we want to limit its use to major festivals. If you would you like to make a donation for the new white set, please send a cheque to the Cathedral office, payable to St. Paul s Cathedral and clearly marked for Vestments Fund. As for a blue set, for the four weeks of Advent, well, this remains on our wish-list!
