CONFESSIONS Saturday: 3:15-3:45 p.m. What is it? Children s Liturgy of the Word is a service offered at the Sunday 10 a.m. Mass. The idea behind Children s Liturgy of the Word is to take young children (Kindergarten through 3 rd grade) and help them understand the Sunday Gospel for the week, in language easier for them to understand. During Children s Liturgy of the Word, the leader will take the children to the Marian Place. There, the leader will read the Gospel with them, using approved materials meant for children, followed by questions on how the Gospel reflects in their life, as well as other activities. Each session is usually about 15 minutes long. It starts right before the First Reading with a dismissal in Church often led with a prayer from the Priest. It will end at the conclusion of the Prayers of the Faithful (petitions). MASS SCHEDULE Saturday Vigil: 4:00 p.m. Sunday: 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Monday - Friday: 12:00 p.m.

God is more offended than ever as people ignore Our Lady s maternal request to stop offending God. Yes, we must listen to Our Lady s request and stop sinning if we hope to enjoy God s blessings and to avert His wrath. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. In The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering. 5 Vince Zaprzal Director of Parish Ministries, Religious Education & Facilities RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES started this past Tuesday, September 11th. Deacon Peter led a wonderful opening year prayer service for the students, parents, and Catechists. Part 3 The Introductory Rites continued...the Gloria After we have remembered God s mercy and forgiveness given to us in Christ, the only appropriate response is to praise God. We do that in the Gloria which follows. This ancient hymn comes from the song of the angels at the birth of Jesus. The Introductory Rite concludes with the Opening Prayer, or the Collect. Here the priest gathers all our prayers notice the hands and how they hold and lift up the prayers of the whole Church. What prayer did you bring with you today? Your prayer, all our prayers are gathered together and joined with the prayer of the Church around the world. Every nation and in every language the same words are said. The Introductory Rite gives us the time and preparation so that we have the right stance for participating in the Eucharist. LITURGY OF THE WORD Once we have been gathered as the Body of Christ, remembered our need for God s love and mercy, and given praise to God, we enter into the Word of God. Once again the Mass of today reaches back to the earliest Christians. Our Liturgy of the Word follows the pattern of a Jewish Synagogue Service with its procession of the Torah to a place of honor so it can be read and God s word proclaimed. Our posture changes in response to the readings, though we remain active listeners because in the Liturgy of the Word we enter into an actual dialogue a conversation with God. First Reading In this reading, usually taken from the Old Testament, we are reminded of all the things that God has done throughout history to save us. As we remember His greatness it gives us hope. In this reading you get a sneak preview of the Gospel because the reading was chosen to match the theme of the Gospel. Psalm We respond to all that God has done for us, using words from the Old Testament as we sing the Responsorial Psalm. The Psalms have been called the Church s first prayerbook. These are words that Jesus himself used in prayer. As we sing the psalm, we are responding to God s greatness using the very Word of God. Second Reading This reading comes from the New Testament; most often one of the epistles. These are instructional letters written by the Apostles to the earliest Christian communities, offering spiritual advice on how to live as a disciple. In these letters are advice and counsel that help us, too, live out our faith. In response to this second reading and in preparation for the Gospel, we stand and sing Alleluia, which is a Hebrew word, meaning Praise God. Just as in the Introductory Rite there was a procession that helped us transition from the outside world to Mass, now there is a procession so that we might prepare our hearts and minds to hear from Jesus himself. We stand out of respect, prepared to hear the very words and life of Jesus. Parts of the above adapted from

6 Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood HELP US HELP THOSE WHO HELPED US Our parish Conference is again preparing to provide a Veteran s Day Celebration for those individuals and their families that have offered to help us through their service to our country and all its citizens and friends across the world. On Saturday, November 3, (11:00 AM 2:00 PM) in our Parish Hall, we are planning on holding a Luncheon Celebration to honor the area s Veterans and their families who serve with them on deployments, training, and multiple relocations of homes and families. Besides the luncheon, we hope to have some entertainment, prizes, gift certificates, and other activities to honor the men, women, and families of those who are or who have recently served all of us with their service to our country. We are now seeking your help to make this event special in every way. This is our third year of doing this and we are learning each day to make it a great celebration of service commitments. This year we hope to have the most recent or current military families now actively serving on duty or as reservists in the nation s military branches. Our Conference is specifically looking for donations of funds (for this we will in no way use funds donated for the poor and needy we serve in our Society), food/clothing Gift Cards, door prizes, show/theatre/sport tickets, restaurant gift cards, or simply volunteering your time to help plan and serve at this event. Let s make it a wonderful experience for those honored in this day of celebration. THE BASEBALL PRIEST: CONVERSION, VOCATION AND THE CHICAGO CUBS Featuring Fr. Burke Masters, a native of Joliet, had a lifelong dream of becoming a major league baseball player. He did not make the majors but little did he know that he would be called to become a Catholic Priest and Chaplain for the World Champion Chicago Cubs. This is his story. Dorothy Day was a prominent reformer and social organizer who found a radical Christian movement committed to working for justice, eradicating poverty, and helping the needy.
