Wingate Holy Trinity Church (Part 1) an introduction by Robert D. Swinburne Wingate Grange Colliery sinking began about 1837 and the first coal was reached in August /4 seam, 3ft 10in thick and a depth of 66 fathoms. Two years on in 1841 October 22, Holy Trinity Church was consecrated. 489 houses inhabited in Wingate and 4 uninhabited. Water was carried in carts from a spring half a mile away. Holy Trinity Church was formed by and Order in Council of 3rd June 1842 and licensed by the Bishop of the Diocese under sections 6 and 7 William IV. Fordyce records the church as plain and simple with respect to ornament but of Elegant Design consisting of four lancet windows on each side and three on the East end and an ornamental bell turret on the West gable. Private subscription built the church and adjoining school 300 being given by the Colliery owners. Lord Howden gave 200 and timber and joinery work for the schools and the sites were given by Mr Rowland Burdon a local landowner. Lady Howden gave 50 and an annuity of 20 to the girl s school. The schoolmaster salary was made up to 70 per year with house and coals. In 1842 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners made an annual grant of 139 per annum to the living of Wingate Grange with a final net income of 150 per annum. The Parsonage House was built about Holy Trinity Church is built of limestone rubble and mortar, probably from stone raised from the colliery sinking and /or from small quarries in the area. The thickness of walls ranges from 27 inches to 30 inches in filled with rubble. The Font The Font at the west end or entrance to the church is constructed of caen stone of 'exquisite design' by Chantry and was presented by a Lady Forbes of Fitzroy Square, London. The first vicar was Reverend E.N.V. Boydell and the congregation community numbered about 450 seats, half were free and half were reserved. The chapels however, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists were probably more popular at this time. Some restoration was undertaken around about In 1871 Rev. Boydell was still vicar and the church gained an organ and heating system. In 1872 The Parsonage House was enlarged. In 1881 the Roman Catholic School opened. The Rev. Boydell died in 1884 surviving his wife by 8 years and his eldest son by one year. In 1884 Rev. Simpson became vicar of a now enlarged parish which included Station Town and was incumbent for 32 years until he died in his widow died

in 1921 aged 78. the next incumbent was the Rev. Oldroyd who served for 3 years after his indication of July 29, Letters of hope and concern were sent from the Holy Trinity Church to Wingate servicemen on the Western Front during World War 1. The timber roof of the Holy Trinity Church is of unique design and the Architect and designer was a man named Jackson. Wingate Holy Trinity Church (Part 2) the organ Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland at one time supported 3 organs used in Episcopalian congregation and National Monuments of Scotland Records show photographs of organs in the chapel restored by the 4th Earl of Rosslyn in These organs must have been in the chapel before the present organ installation of The organ in the Holy Trinity Church has the same case as one of the Rosslyn chapel organs and Mr. Hamilton of C.F. Hamilton organ builders, Edinburgh, confirms this. Why the organ was removed and what its specifications were at the time of removal remains a mystery. Rebuilt in 1928 by H.J. Nelson of Durham and an organ case design can be found in 'Thomas Chippendale s Gentleman s and Cabinet Makers Directory' edition of 1772 and it is possible that the case of the now Wingate organ could have been modelled on the design from this directory. The presence of Fleyr de Lise, among the decoration may indicate a French Connection. The organ might have originated in a stately home from 1772 onwards. Lord Rosslyn enjoyed a wide acquaintance among nobility. He might have passed it on to a fellow coal owner with an interest in Wingate or it might have come from C.F. Hamilton firm commercial transactions. It is quite possible that the organ was installed at Wingate by D and T Hamilton. The pipes of one stop may not have changed in 1880 when it was serviced, since the name on nub is Stop Diapason just as in 1872 (on the other hand there are suggestions might only have come to Wingate in early The colliery fortunes influenced the community and the church. On 14th October persons were killed in an explosion in the Low Main seam at Wingate Grange Colliery. A memorial records 26 names, two people died later as a result of the explosion. It was recorded that the Suffragan Bishop of Durham visited the bereaved. The memorial was unveiled on 21st December 1907 and is sited opposite the church near the community centre.

Growth continued in the Holy Trinity Church but the effects of the Great War were felt as they were in towns and villages across the country. A memorial stained glass window commemorates those who gave their lives, 147 names are inscribed on a brass tablet erected to their memory at the west end of the Holy Trinity Church. The memorial in copper is on the same wall. Wingate Holy Trinity Church (Part 4) the fabric of the church Tablets Two commemorative tablets erected on the North and South interior walls remember two young sons of Wingate lost at sea. In 1895 an 18 year old boy was drowned when the ship he was sailing in foundered and in 1929 a 16 year old boy was drowned when his ship went down in the Atlantic. Both lads were probably on their first voyages. A tablet in the sanctuary remembers Reverend P.E. Bowman who was vicar of Wingate for 21 years. Reverend Towers succeeded Rev. Bowman and his ministry lasted for 10 years. Reverend E.W. Taylor in 1951 became vicar of Wingate and his ministry lasted for 33 years. In 1941 the church celebrated its centenary and to commemorate the event and as a memorial to Reverend Bowman oak panelling was erected behind the choir stalls. The Reredos and wooden altar were installed in 1952 by the Holy Trinity P.C.C. commemorating the men of Wingate who died in the Second World War. Parish Council plans to erect a war memorial to the men who died in the Second World War came to fruition on the 13th February 1955 when the Bishop of Durham the Right Reverend A.M. Ramsey dedicated the War Memorial, block and tablet in the Parish Church all achieved by public subscription. Clock The clock is sited in the west gable and a stone inserted in the perimeter wall denotes the fact. The west facing perimeter wall was also erected by public subscription. In 1963 Wingate Grange Parish became the United Benefice of Wingate Grange with Hutton Henry, and the incumbent became the Reverend E. W. Taylor after 12 years as vicar of Wingate. He served another 20 years before retiring in His successor and subsequent successors were Reverend D.J. Bell, Reverend P. Grundy and currently Father M. Vasey. In 2000 year Wingate United Benefice was joined with Wheatley Hill to become United Benefice of Wheatley Hill, Wingate and Hutton Henry signs of change.

Holy Trinity church became a target for thieves on a number of occasions. Safes were stolen, vestments destroyed and other attempted thefts in which documents and records scattered and church plates and sacramental vessels were removed subsequently recovered but not without damage. Caring parishioners reflect the dedication bestowed upon the Holy Trinity by memorials named and unnamed. In the sanctuary are wooden candlesticks (standards created by Thompson of Kilburn he of the mouse). A wooden screen behind the commemorative lectern blends admirably with previous mentioned panelling. Heating The heating system of Holy Trinity suffered many problems changing from solid fuel fired boilers to oil fired heating until in 1985 the system failed altogether and was abandoned. Church members including plumbers and electricians installed new system of propane gas heating, and it became operational at Easter of The system was updated towards the end of the nineties and now operates on gas. Unfortunately the current climate of vandalism and theft necessitate the security systems in force. The church is locked and an alarm system installed for safety reasons outside service and function times. At present the only place of worship in Wingate parish is Holy Trinity Church. Unfortunately the ravages of time and weather often leave their mark on buildings and the Holy Trinity Church, which is now a Grade 11 listed building, is no exception. Plans are afoot for installation of toilets in line with current legislation and restoration work both inside and outside taking the church into the 21st Century The Churchyard The churchyard surrounds the church. Early headstones are mainly of sandstone and only a few are now legible. The remaining headstones a few still legible and some make harrowing and even amusing reading in the 1860 s 1870 s the incidence of the loss of children in illness was fairly common and sometimes resulted in whole families being bereaved. A memorial to John Douglas age 56 in 1860 records his children Margery 20th August years Elizabeth 17th August years

John Charles 20th August year Joseph 9th September years Headstones show some movement of families, one such stone memorial for a woman who died in 1862 records that her son and family moved to Cleveland in the United States where the son died in The oldest headstones in the churchyard are in the immediate vicinity of the church. The study of headstones and churchyards is a study in itself and the very early memorials even name the occupations of those they commemorate such as master sinker, master mariner, brewer, doctor, miner etc. The memorial to the master mariner also records the captain's son lost at sea. A popular epitaph appearing on memorials to notable persons reads In life respected in death lamented. To date the churchyard is not listed as closed.
