2 CATHEDRAL RENOVATION OUTAGE UPDATE Five weeks out of the thirteen week outage for the renovation of the Cathedral have now been completed. Progress is going well and the project is on schedule. All the pews during the first week were disassembled and sent to Wood Renovators in Iola. They have begun stripping and sanding and staining the pews boards. The supports and ends are already stained and varnished. They expect to have all the pew boards finished by the end of October and are scheduled to be reinstalled the week of November 14 th. The first two concrete steps behind the altar have been cut back, leaving only the third step. Two smaller steps to the tabernacle have been rebuilt. This was a very loud dusty project but has freed up a long wanted amount of space by the altar for con-celebration of Mass. The two areas on the sides, by the first step to the sanctuary, have been built in with Travertine tile to match the existing tile installed. The Church has been filled with scaffold for the mural restoration. Six of the murals have already been refurbished. They are the ones in back of the nave by the choir loft. The scaffold for these six murals has also been removed. The other two murals in the nave and the two in the transepts are scheduled to be completed in the next two weeks. These ten, murals if you recall, are painted on canvass. The present varnish covering the murals was removed carefully with a chemical in very small areas at a time. A syringe was then used to insert glue where the canvass had detached from the wall. A varnish primer was applied to the paintings and then touch up painting occurred. Very little touch up painting was needed on these murals, only where water damage from the windows above occurred. A final layer of varnish was then applied. They look gorgeous! Work has started on the large mural in the apse with three to four artists working daily on it. It is still many weeks before completion. This mural is requiring the most work. There will be more shared on this in the next update. The new porcelain floor has been installed in the Monroe Street entrance. This includes the steps, bathrooms, bridal, grotto, and Baptism rooms. With the scaffold starting to be removed in the nave, the contractors have begun to install the tile toward the front of the church at a pretty good pace. They are scheduled to be to the front pew line by November 1 st. The organ console is being rebuilt at the Wicks factory and is scheduled to be reinstalled in early November. ~From the Tech Committee: Steve Motl

PRAYER CORNER Prayer is in fact the recognition of our limits and our dependence: we come from God, we are of God, and to God we return. ~Saint John Paul II One of the things necessary to pray well is humility. When we come before God in prayer, we beat our breast like the tax collector in Luke's gospel, Lord be merciful to me a sinner! By looking to God's greatness, we see our littleness; His perfection, our pettiness; His mercy, our selfishness. But the wonder of it all - He loves us still and desires us to draw nearer to Him. This week spend time daily reflecting in gratitude for our God Who loves us so!

5 FROM FR. JOE I woke up Monday morning to a phone call about the Mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas. It was not a peaceful way to start the day. It is becoming overwhelming, story after story of mass killings, whether by gun, or car or bomb. Where is this all coming from? The motive is often mysterious or unknown which adds to the sense of helplessness. And yet, several times now, I have come across articles attempting to draw our attention to one potential cause, even if partial, the over use of anti-depressant drugs and opiates. There is a clear linkage between criminals who engage in mass killings and their use of psychotropic antidepressant drugs. Interestingly, our country has the highest per capita rate of use of these drugs although, according to the World Health Organization, our country is not the country with the highest rate of depression. This linkage between drug use and violence is evident even in Islamic terrorists. Perhaps this should be of no surprise since Islam itself forbids suicide. There is going to be a lot of quick fixes demanded from our government, but is there really such a thing? There are always cases where drugs are needed to regulate chemical imbalances. However, could we as a society be taking it too far, trying to medicate something that can not be medicated? Could depression and violence be coming from another source? I would like to suggest that a lack of pray in ones life can cause depression and other negative emotions. As St. Augustine once wrote, "Our hearts are restless till they rest in you, O Lord." And that restlessness, if not healed, can manifest itself through violence. I have certainly experienced the importance of prayer in my own life. When I get too busy, too caught up with activities, and my prayer suffers, I experience a lack of peace and balance in my heart. Imagine what can happen to those who have no sense of God or family in this world, no sense of belonging? To fill that void, people can attempt to medicate themselves, looking for God in all the wrong places. And of course, that never ends well. Let us each make sure our personal relationship with God is strong. Are we staying connected with the source of our life and our peace? As Christians, let us also invite our friends and neighbors to join us on s and help them to experience the peace and joy of knowing God as a loving Father. And let us pray for all those killed, the hundreds of wounded, their families and friends, and our nation. Lord God, grant us the gift of healing, and protect us from all violence that we may live all our days in peace in your service. ~Fr. Joe
